theShvetashvataraUpanishad(400200BC),whichfoundedthetraditionofRudraShivaworship.Here
theyareidentifiedasthecreatorsofthecosmosandliberatorsofsoulsfromthebirthrebirthcycle.The
periodof200BCto100ADalsomarksthebeginningoftheShaivatraditionfocusedontheworshipof
Shiva,withreferencestoShaivaasceticsinPatanjali'sMahbhyaandintheMahabharata.[53][91]
EarlyhistoricalpaintingsattheBhimbetkarockshelters,depictShivadancing,Shiva'strident,andhis
