Learning Strategies

Teachers Activity
A. Pre-assessment

Students Activity

1. Prayer
Everybody, please stand for the
prayer.
Take your seats.

(The students will stand and pray)

(The students will sit down)

2. Greetings
Good afternoon class!
How are you doing?

Good Afternoon Maam Ras!

Were doing fine Maam.

3. Checking of Attendance
Im glad to hear that. Who are absent
today?
Very good!

Nobody is absent today!

4. Recapitulation
Our topic yesterday was Gymnosperms.
What was our topic yesterday?
Yes. What is gymnosperm?

Very good! What are the four

divisions of gymnosperms?

Gymnosperms are plants that have seeds

but no flowers. They referred to as naked
seed. The seeds of these plants are on
cones or in cups.
The four divisions of gymnosperms are
cycadophyta, coniferophyta, gnetophyta,
and ginkgophyta.

Thats right! Gymnosperms are very

important because they are widely used
in construction, furniture-building,
paper-making and urban planning, as
well as providing important solvents
for industrial and home use, cleaning
agents, and food.
5. Motivation
(The teacher will begin the class by
making the students a list of all the
flower parts they know.)

(The students will make a list of the flower

parts they know)

Pre-Lab Activity:
(See attached Activity sheet)

(The students will perform the activity)

Laboratory Proper:
Post-Lab Activity:
1. Process:
What is Flower?

Thats right! All flowers have stems, sepals,

petals and male and female structures. The stem is
a long green part which grows out of the ground

Flowers are the reproductive structures

of a flowering plant.

and holds the flower above the ground. Many

The four main parts of flower are
plants (angiosperms) contain flowers where the
sepals, petals, stamen, and pistil.
sex cells are contained for the plants reproduction.
Sepal is the one who protect the flower
Flowers have four main parts. What are these?
when it was in bud.
Thats right! What is sepal?
Very good! Sepal is a protective leaf-like
enclosure for the flower buds, usually green,
collectively called calyx. Sometimes highly
colored like the petal as in iris. What is petal?

Petals are usually colorful petal-like

structures making up the flower.
Pistil is the female organ of a flower.

Yes. Petals operate to protect some parts of

the flower and attract/repel specific pollinators.
What is pistil?

The three areas of pistil are stigma,

style, and ovary

Thats right! Pistil is composed of three areas.

What are they?

Stigma is the part of the pistil where

pollen germinates.

Very good! The female structure is the central

part of the flower. What is stigma?

Style is long tube grows out of the

ovary.

Yes. The stigma is sticky so that it can catch

pollen grains from other flowers. What is style?
Thats correct! Style is connective tissues
between stigma and ovary. Together the stigma
and style are called the carpel. What is the ovary?
Very good! The ovary is found at the top of
the stem above the sepals and inside the petals.
Inside the ovary are the female reproductive seeds.
These are called ovules. Next is the stamen. What
is stamen?
Yes! The male structures are called the
stamens. The stamens are arranged in a ring
around the center of the flower. Each stamen is
divided into two parts. What are these?
Thats correct! What is anther?

Ovary contains ovules or embryo sacs.

Stamen is the male organ of a flower.

These are the anther and filament.

Anther is the part of the stamen
where pollen is produced.

Filament is a stalk supporting anther.

Exactly! The top of the stamen is called the

anther and this is where the pollen is stored. The
pollen is the male reproductive cell. What is
filament?
Thats right! Attached to the anther is a long
thin stalk which is called the filament. The
filament is attached to the bottom of the flower.
Did you get it?

Yes Maam.
The economic importance of flowers is
it can provide economic resources in the
form of wood, paper, for decoration and
can relieve stress.

What is the economic importance of

flowers?
Thats right! Flowering plants also provide
economic resources in the form of wood, paper,
fiber (cotton, flax, and hemp, among others),
medicines (digitalis, camphor), decorative and
landscaping plants, and many other uses. Did you
understand?
2. Generalization
What have you learned from our topic
today?

Thats right! Anything else?

Very good!
IV.

Evaluation

Direction. Encircle the correct answer.
1. Collective term of petals.
a. Calyx
b. Corolla
c. Petals
d. Sepals
2. Male organ of a flower.

Yes Maam.

I have learned that the flowers are very

important because it can relieve stress and
provide economic resources to us.
I also learned that the flowers have 4
main parts. These are the stamen, pistil,
sepals, and petals.

Objectives:
Identify each flower part.
Discuss the role of each flower part.
Materials needed:
Gumamela flower
construction paper
razor blades
toothpicks
markers
glue or scotch tape
Procedures:
1. The teacher will divide the class into 6 groups. Each group will be given a
Gumamela flower, cartolina, glue or scotch tape, marker, razor blade.
2. The students should carefully dissect the flower, answer questions and do the
required drawings.
3. Have each student or each group of students tape or glue and label each flower
part on construction paper.
4. The students will post and report their outputs.
Results and Discussions:
Part A: The Sepals and Petals. Carefully examine your specimen.
1. Do you see green leaves surrounding the bottom of the flower?
2. What are they called?
Observe the colored petals of your flower
3. How many petals are present?
4. What advantage of the colored petals?
Part B: The Pistil and Stamen. Carefully remove enough sepals and petals from your
flower so that you can observe the inner parts.
1. Do you see a large stalk\like part in the center of the flower? This part is
called the pistil. It is divided into three areas. The large, bottom part is called
the ovary, the middle area is called the style and the top part is called the
stigma.
2. Draw and label the three areas of the pistil: stigma, style and ovary.

Surrounding the pistil are several upright stalks.

3. What are these called?
If you observe carefully, you can see structures attached to the tops of the stalks.
4. What are these called?

5. What do they produce?

Part C: The Ovary. Carefully remove the pistil from your flower.
With your razor blade, cut across the ovary.
1. What do you see inside the ovary?
2. What is the function of the ovary?
3. What is the biological function of the flower?
4. Draw the stamen and label the anther and the filament.
