East Africa Academy at Arusha 2015

We are incredibly excited that Zinduka Festival 2015 is

finally happening! After the inaugural festival in 2013 and
the second edition in 2014, participants were unanimous
on the need to make Zinduka Festival an annual event.
As local organizing committee, we promised to hold the
third edition this year, again in Arusha, a city resonating so
well with the collective efforts of the people for regional
integration and Pan-Africanism.
The Zinduka Festival provides a mingling space for East
Africans to not only celebrate our diversities but also
to engage in the integration process. Indeed, Zinduka is
an awakening of our consciousness as common people
to realize the tremendous power we have to change
our destiny.
Special thanks goes to the Zinduka Organising Committee
(ZOC) for planning the 2015 Festival; your dedication
to this noble cause is highly appreciated and cannot be
repaid.

continue to consume you and may you leave this place
with an energized spirit of East Africaness. There is power

I had an absolutely fascinating conversation with

Zaainab in Moshi the other day. In Kenya, she
could well have been called Wanjiku or Nalubega
in Uganda or even Rwagasore in Burundior
Ainkamiye in Rwanda you get the drift. She was
a typical Tanzanian woman but then again not
completely typical because she had gathered the
guts to talk to this lonely, linguistically clumsy
stranger!

She explained that she was originally from Dares-salaam and wanted to know what I, mtu wa
bara kutoka Kenya, was doing in Tanzania and
if indeed we were taking all the plum Tanzanian
jobs. Lakini jamani, mbona hamna hata aibu
nyinyi waKenya? she asked. She seemed to switch
to Kiswahili every time she had the most probing
and sincere questions. The more mundane issues
were discussed in English which she spoke well,
even though a little less confidently. Her Swahili
on the other hand was so perfect, I wished I could
similarly explain fluently and compellingly that
Kenyans are in fact not hyenas.
Sisi sio fisi. I started to say, Tuna roho safi pia
kama wengine then I hesitated as I searched
for the words to explain that we were actually
the victims of stereotypes that were created at
a certain time when some of the accusations
that resulted in this image may have held some
truth. Her eye contact was captivating and she
genuinely wanted to know not because she
could do anything about Tanzanian jobs being

taken by Kenyans, but because she wanted to form

a well-informed opinion. She recalled that she had
been in a restaurant in Arusha and had been served by
a Kenyan Manager. He was courteous, she observed
and actually more efficient than his Tanzanian
counterpart; the restaurant however, seemed short
staffed even with the Kenyan there , so she could not
claim that they had been dispossessed of any jobs.
From this conversation I learnt that Zaainab got
her insights and guts from listening to BBC and
participating in some of their call-in-programs. She
got to know the continent better ever since she started
listening to the radio and now wanted to know even
more because it affected her. She asked what I knew
about Ebola and if our country had really shut the
borders to Ebola and if there was a chance that it
could use panya routes to get into the region. Even
women need to know these things, she asserted and
went on to ask her questions in the end asking many
more than I can address here.
I tell the story of my chance meeting with Zaainab
because she will make a wonderful participant at
Zinduka. It is people like her and you that will help
make Zinduka the space it aspires to be; a valuable
meeting point and place for conversations on regional
integration a celebration of our diversity and the
potential this holds for making us even better, smarter
and brighter together than as disparate individuals
groping in a strange place. Zinduka belongs to us all
and we hope that you will seize the opportunity to
own every bit of it.

Fellow citizens and Panafricanists, welcome to more quickly to stop the carnage and pull the country
the beautiful green City of Arusha and to Zinduka from the precipice.
Festival 2015! The Third Edition of Zinduka
should make it clear to everyone that we mean
business. We mean business because we want the
lives and voices of everyone of the 150 million
East Africans to count and we are committed to
make sure that they indeed do so.

Thus this year Zinduka is less of a celebration and more

of solidarity with our suffering brothers and sisters in
Burundi. We must stand with each other in shine and
in rain!

The situation we find ourselves in today in East Africa

There are many things we can be happy about and echoes the melancholic words from the depth of times
that we should celebrate within the Community. in Charles Dickens A Tale of Two Cities;
But we dedicate this years Festival to Burundi. We
stand with the People of Burundi and condemn
the atrocities committed. We are appalled by
the hundreds of people who have been killed
since violence broke out in the country in April
and regret the over 150,000 people who have
been uprooted from their homes and now live in
deplorable conditions in refugee camps around
the region.
We recognize that the root cause of the violence
is the violation of the Arusha Peace Agreement for
Burundi and the countrys Constitution. We are
clear that the government in place is illegal and
illegitimate as it is in office unconstitutionally.

the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was
the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it
was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness,
it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair,
we had everything before us, we had nothing before
us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all
going direct the other way in short, the period was
so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest
authorities insisted on its being received, for good or
for evil...
Pray for Burundi. Stand with Burundi. Fight for Burundi.
Whatever you do, do something wherever you are!
Injustice in Burundi is injustice everywhere!!
This dedication is in line with our theme for this year;
Integration... People First! So let us engage and let us
stand for and with one another... shoulder to shoulder
in solidarity!

But we also regret that EAC has neither been

able to protect the people of Burundi, a Member
State and neither has it been able to rein in a
rogue State. This calls for a re-examination of Africa Moja! Africa Huru! One People, One Destiny!
the foundations of the EAC and the Treaty that
establishes it. We must start that conversation.
But of immediate import is to stop the killings and
bring to justice the perpetrators in Burundi. We

The Arusha Academy

The East African Academy @ Arusha (eaa@a) is a platform upon which
collaborative efforts between numerous interested and optimistic East
African citizens stimulate the active participation of their kith and kin in the
integration process.
It is a venue for conversations, which co-create, educate and celebrate,
the academy is a reference point for interrogating ideas around regional
integration and best practice in respect of rights with a particular emphasis
on the active pursuit of second-generation rights.
The vision of the Academy is to contribute to the creation of the kind of
leadership that is committed to enabling East African citizens to excel and
indeed, to be all they can be both at home and beyond.
The first East African Academy @ Arusha (eaa@a) was held in June 2013. The
second academy was also held in Arusha on 4th and 5th November 2014.
The third academy was held on 23rd November 2015 again in Arusha.

Every year we line up dozens of events for families, youth and industry
covering everything from a half marathon, caravans, road shows,
street processions, exhibitions, great speakers, concerts, self organized
convenings, gala night, awards and many more.
The third edition of Zinduka Festival, #ZindukaFest2015 will build on
the successes of the 2013, 2014 editions promising to be the largestever gathering of participants from the five East African countries
drawn from different backgrounds and sectors.

Dorphan - The Spoken Word Artist

Dorphan, official name Dennis Mutuma Mutua, is a 24-year-old spoken word
artist who uses poery to address issues affecting humanity. He will give a
performance on East Africas sociopolitical realities.

Vitali Maembe

The poised and refined Vitali is a trailblazer in Tanzanian music scene, his
soulful voice and conscious messages warm the ears of many - adults and
children alike.
Genre: Reggae/African

Grand master Masese is one of the

youths in Nairobi Kenya,fusing
traditional instruments,music,poetry
and spoken word.He plays Obukano an
ancient instrument from the Gusii(aka
Kisii) community from western
Kenya,Nyanza province.
Genre: afro-poetry,folk contradiction

The Foursum
Street & newspaper theater performers from
Uganda. The FourSum theatre group brings
to Zinduka stories and myths weaved in a
powerful theatrical stage perfomance.

Kabubi Herman was born in Kampala,

Uganda where he began writing
poetry, singing, and dancing at an
early age. As a prolific writer, he
recites poems echoing the shifting
allegiance of African natives from their
roots to popular Western cultures and
how these experiences are translated
into a hybrid society, social issues that
continue to affect people.

Slim Emcee[UG]-The Poet

Nada

Linda Nabasa AKA Nada was born on the 16th of

September 1989 and hails from western Uganda.
She is a poet, singer, songwriter, short story writer
and playwright. She is an entertaining stage
performer who uses her poetry and music to not
only entertain but also educate the community
about HIV/AIDS, poverty eradication, political,
cultural, women emancipation, violence against
women and children.
