III. A din gets power into a spin
Ambient noise could be converted into power via a spinning-top like device, says a Danish
university inventor. Yaroslav Zolotaryuk of the Technical University of Denmark used two
rectangular metal plates to turn the unpredictable vibrations from sound into motion.
Connected by a rod and springs, the upper plate picks up vibrations and transfers them to
lower one, which lies flat. Due to the layout of the springs, friction between the lower plate
and the surface below is such that it moves more smoothly in one direction rather than the
other. So it turns continuously in a circle rather than jumping randomly from the effects of the
vibrations. It is hoped that the device could eventually be used to collect useful energy from
sound.
IV. Air of optimism over fossil fuel

US Goverment researchers are attempting to develop a simple, cost-effective way to extract

carbon dioxide from the air. If the process is a success, scientists at the Los Alamos National
Library say it would reduce the build-up of greenhouse gases, allowing fossil fuel use to
continue. The air is passed over an extraction agent such as a solution of quicklime, allowing
the carbon dioxide to react with the substance and become calcium carbonate. This is heated
to convert it back to quicklime, and carbon dioxide gas, which can be captured and put to
another use. If conducted on a large enough scale, researchers claim atmospheric carbon
dioxide could be cut to pre-industrial Age levels.
