Jaen and the Sierra Cazorla Part 1

OK, I know that most people like to take
their holidays in the summer, but in my
line of work that proves to be impossible,
as does a break of more than 5 nights!!
What I wouldnt give for a fortnight in the
Caribbean!!
Over the festive period, I packed my bags
and booked myself and my trusty dog
Weetabix a holiday in the province of Jaen,
close to the beautiful natural park of the
Sierra Cazorlas. We had booked a week
in a complex called Country Club Ibipozo,
which seemed from the photos to be a
complex of traditional country cottages
set around a pool in the countryside.
As most of you will know, I rely on the
SATNAV in my head, so armed once more
with a scrap of paper and a suit case I set
off on the journey to my holiday home.
The nearest village was called Pozo Alcn
and it took us a little over 2 hours to get
there, including a break for Weetie to
stretch her ageing legs. As we arrived
in the town, we spotted the signs to the
resort and after a trouble-free journey,
arrived just before 5pm.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Reception wasnt open until 5pm, but

the staff were prompt and within 10
minutes we were settled in our lovely
country cottage. An order of logs for 10
(including matches and firelighters) was
delivered within half an hour and so after
a walk round the complex and the nearby
olive groves, I had nothing more to do
than stack my logs, light a fire and sit and
read with a glass of wine. Bliss!

Discover The Secrets To A Happy Life

In Spain
Ambassador urges British residents to
follow the example of those who are most
content
Some of the secrets to happy living in
Spain are revealed in a new survey by the
British Embassy on how expatriates adjust
to a life in the sun.
Integration into the Spanish way of life is
the key, the survey reveals. More than half
of the British residents who responded
say they speak Spanish regularly with
friends and neighbours, enjoy Spanish
food, use the Spanish healthcare system
and employ Spanish tradespeople. The
adjective happy is the word that they
most commonly use to describe their
lives in Spain, followed by relaxed and
content, but some Brits admit to getting
by without learning Spanish or registering
on the padrn and fail to make Spanish
friends or keep up with Spanish news and
politics; all things that appear to help
others get more out of living in Spain.
Almost 1600 people responded to the
British Embassys Integrometer online

Page 8

but much to the dogs disgust I chose to
sleep in the double room at the top of the

up every evening as she was unable to
navigate the stairs on her own! (I had the
same problem on New Years Eve, but for
different reasons!!).

survey into levels of resident integration.

Two-thirds live in Andalucia or the
Comunidad de Valencia, where there
are some high concentrations of British
residents and integration is often low.
Further significant numbers live in the
Canaries, Murcia, the Balearics, Catalunya
and the Madrid region.
Commenting on the survey, British
ambassador Simon Manley said Its great
to see so many Brits saying they are
happy and content in Spain as a result of
their efforts to integrate into local life. I
would definitely urge others to follow their
example. If you are settling here, the
first and most important thing to do is to
register on the padrn. That way you can
access the health and social services you
may need now or in future.
If you fail to register, then you cant
expect support from the Spanish system
later. Some of the most tragic cases
that we see in our Consulates are the
consequences of people having moved
to Spain often years earlier but not
signing up on the padrn or integrating
into their local Spanish communities.

the village, but Ill share that with you

Nine out of 10 people say they are

registered on the padrn, which implies
that one in 10 survey respondents have
yet to do so. More than half say they
have a Spanish will and over 50% have a
Spanish driving licence.
Two thirds are registered for Spanish
healthcare, with another 13% having
private medical insurance, but an alarming
16% admit they have failed to provide for
their healthcare in Spain, leaving them at
serious risk of difficulties in the event of
an accident or illness.
Spanish food proves popular. Nearly a
quarter say they eat a Spanish meal every
day and eight out of ten do so at least
once a week. Only 6% say they eat a
Spanish meal less than once a month.
The wealth of advice on the British
Embassys own Living in Spain
Facebook page helps nearly four out of
10 people integrate into Spanish life and
provides useful links to both Spanish and
British government procedures and public
information.

I made my way from Edirne in northern

Turkey, back to Istanbul by bus in the early
morning. Then after taking three hours
to get through the horrendous Istanbul
traffic by public transport, I was soon on
an internal flight to the city of Gaziantep.

traditional cafs supping my delicious

Arabic coffee and puffing on a hookah pipe,
I noticed a teenage boy, raking through
bins for whatever scraps he could find.
Syrian refugee, my waiter told me.

Formerly known as and still sometimes

referred to as Antep, Gaziantep is a city in
south east Turkey. Rich in culture it is one
of the oldest inhabited cities in the world.
In another time it would have been a
cultural trip, but the reality of today is that
Gaziantep, being only 60 miles from the
Syrian city of Aleppo, where brutal fighting
has taken place in recent years, is a city
thats now feeling very nervous indeed.
Over the border in Syria, thousands
have died in Aleppo as brutal fighting
continues between rebels and the
Assad regime. Buildings of religious and
historical importance are also being
blown up by Islamic State in the Aleppo
area. Regarding Gaziantep, the British
government currently advises against,
all but essential travel, and that
there is a high threat of terrorism understandable really.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

In the old town of Gaziantep, the traders

sell fresh spices, coffee, tea, tobacco,
baklava and real proper Turkish delight.
My senses were dancing with delight! It
felt so calm and peaceful and one could
so easily have forgotten about Syria being
so close. Although my new Turkish friends
in northern Edirne had told me not go
to Gaziantep, it felt a must regarding
researching borders for my book. I also,
when in Gaziantep, felt I was seeing the
real authentic Turkey and certainly not the
tourist version in holiday resorts or even
western-friendly central Istanbul.
Gaziantep to me is the real Turkey and
there were no other westerners that I
could see.
As I sat out at one of Gazianteps

I
explored
the city by
foot for most
of the day
and did as I
always
do,
just
went
wandering
off
down
the
side
streets and
away
from
the centre.
I ended up
in a very old
residential
area.
The
streets were
tiny
and
cobbled and
it felt like a
bygone era.
The
locals
were poor but friendly and the old guy in
the photo nodded his head and smiled a
golden toothed smile at me as we passed.

Back in the centre, I was looking forward to

sampling the food which people in Edirne
told me was the best in all Turkey. How
right they were! The local delicacy, a very
thin bread topped with minced lamb and
spices, is called Lahmacun and was melt
in the mouth stuff. Washed down with a
bottle of water and a Turkish coffee, the
bill came to 2!
Later that night I couldnt sleep because
of the heat and no air-con in my cheap
hotel, so at 4am I headed out for a stroll.
The streets were near empty, except for
the odd taxi driver, but then, in the middle
of the actual road, come walking towards
me with barrows and contraptions like
luggage trolleys, a rag tag bunch of youths
and boys. They were Syrian refugees who
go out at night to scavenge around for
recyclables like glass, paper and plastic,
which they collect then sell on. They keep
the streets clean, earn some cash and help
to maintain what little dignity they have
left. The oldest in the group must have
been around seventeen and the youngest,
no more than eight. I waved at them, they
smiled, waved back and continued down
the road, picking up their wares. They
didnt look down-beaten. In fact they
looked alert, positive and had that look
about them that said, at least were doing
something.
Suddenly a police car stopped at the
side of the road and asked to check my
documents. In English the officer said,
You shouldnt walk around at this time.
Turkish people no problem; most refugees
no problem, but otherswell we dont
know who else is here. Best to go to your
hotel, ok?
Islamic State fighters are known to
have crossed the border and are already
operating in Gaziantep. I was also told
that the kidnapping of a westerner and
driving them back across the border into
Syria was not out of the question.
I headed back, fell asleep for a couple of
hours and after a weak shower but strong
coffee, I was waiting for my driver at 9am.
He had been arranged in advance through
a contact in Edirne and knew where he was
being asked to take me. We were heading
south to a huge Syrian refugee camp, but
I also wanted to get as close as I possibly
could to the actual Syrian border, which I
knew was totally sealed off.
With official advice to not even come to
the city of Gaziantep, was I really in a car
hurtling towards the actual Syrian border?
Hands up to being slightly nervous.

Introduction To Present Perfect Tense

Today we are going to start looking at a
new thing to do with verbs. So far we
have linked some sentences in a simple
way to talk about our intentions, needs
and obligations, keeping our verbs in
their simple infinitive form (for example
hablar). Then we looked at changing
each verb into a gerund or -ing form
(for example hablando) and using this to
talk about things happening at the present
moment.
In both cases the main verb
itself only has one form, which makes it
much simpler to deal with.
We are now going to do a similar thing, this
time enabling us to talk about past events.
We are going to turn the verb into what
we call a past participle. Before we do
that though, we need to know what a past
participle is in English!
For example, lets take the verb to speak.
In English we can work out the changes
by saying: Today I speak, Yesterday I
spoke, Recently, I have spoken. This
gives us three forms of the verb to speak,

Page 14

We are also seeking a working gas boiler

and 2 washing machines.
It is heart
breaking seeing families washing their
clothes in an animal trough in cold water.
We appeal to any businesses in the area
who receive machines still in working order

namely, speak, spoke, spoken. Spoken

is our past participle and we combine it
with the word have or has in English to
talk about the recent past. I have spoken
to the lawyer and he says that .

have to ask for more information about the

situation to work out which form theyre
looking for. They sometimes look at me
strangely, as if I cant answer the question
or something!

Unfortunately some English speakers use

this form wrongly in their own language.
You hear people say I have spoke,
using the past tense instead of the past
participle.
Another difficulty for us is
that sometimes the past tense and the
past participle are the same in English.
For example: Today I buy, Yesterday I
bought, Recently I have bought.
So
bought is both the past tense and the
past participle of the verb to buy.

Well, theres plenty more to say about all

of this, but just so you are not left entirely
in the dark, here is how we form a past
participle in Spanish. In most cases we
take the ar off the infinitives of ar
verbs and change it to ado. Therefore
spoken is hablado. We take the er
or ir endings off those verbs and change
them to ido. Therefore drunk as is I
have drunk is bebido and slept (as in
I have slept) is dormido.
I say in
most cases because there are one or two
irregular ones. Theres also a great deal
more to say about this subject as a whole,
but at least weve made a start!

This is also true (in English dont worry

well get onto the Spanish before this
article is over!) of our regular verbs which
end in -ed. Today I wash; yesterday I
washed; recently I have washed.
Sometimes people ask me: How you do
say washed in Spanish? or How do you
say bought in Spanish? To answer this I

the years?

Hair Colouring
Colouring our hair has become one of the
most common and easiest things to do in
order to change our image, style, or even
just lift our mood. It might be only when we
move to another country or area, or even
when we feel like we arent getting quite
what we need. Finding help in the right
place can be difficult.

Eyes
Choose a natural colour for your eye shade,
or go creative to stand out from the crowd.

Thanks to Wella and their brand new Colour

what suits you in a colour, but also explain
to your hairdresser in easy terms exactly
what you as the client are looking for.

We often come across clients who have used

home colour and found what they wanted
and what they got were two completely
different things. If you are in a foreign
country often the language barrier can be
somewhat problematic in describing your
desires to your stylist.

Reading this at the start of February we

will be in one of Spains most remarkable
few weeks - the gorgeous almond blossom
season, unless it is all over by now! The
acres of white and pink blossom must be
one of the wonders of Spain! Every year it
amazes me. I often think it looks like snow.
The fields are just covered. I hope, for the
almond farmers and all farmers, that the
extremely dry and warm winter does not
affect their production. Any regular readers
will know I have a large cultivated garden
with two wells supplying the water for it.
Usually in the winter I get a break from the
twice weekly watering, but not this year!
Luckily the wells have remained wet, but
I suspect this summer will see them dry.
Apart from the water shortage, all is well at
Casa Rainbow. All the animals like the fires

What charity are you?

We get asked this quite often at the TableTop Sales on Camposol B, even though we do
promote who we are. However, we explain
that we are Forget Me Not and we provide
free respite care and support for anybody
looking after a loved-one suffering from a
long-term illness, disability or dementia.
A number of people pop along to our often
lively sessions on each Monday morning from
10.30am at the Cultural Centre, Camposol

because they feel that we might be of some
help in the future.

a gorgeous ginger tomcat has appeared no funny business though! She is now a
chubby healthy glossy girl, who comes for
strokes as much as food! Hopefully it may
be possible to catch Mr Tom when he has
become tame.
This is just one of many cases that we
assist every month and we could not do this
work without the generosity of you lovely
people. If you have given a new life to an
abandoned dog or cat and need help with
an unexpected bill, contact MAMAS by
email or in person and we will consider it
at a committee meeting. If you require help
with sterilization please help by giving us
the approx weight of the animal.
Our superstore is well stocked with good
quality furniture donations and some of
it is stunning. We have a beautiful floral
Marks and Spencer suite, many beds and
headboards, lounge units coffee tables etc.
We are in Puerto de Mazarrn on the main
road after Mercadona. Turn left between
Consum and the Oclock Bar. The store is
third on the left in Calle San Juan.
We also have good quality clothing.

Getting back to the question, there are a

number of charities working in the greater
Mazarrn area, so its not really surprising
that the identities are not always clear. One
thing they all have in common is that a lot
of good is provided to a lot of people, but by
relatively few.
All the charities and support groups rely on
local residents to help them function and
fulfil their aims, and Forget Me Not is no
exception. Can YOU spare a few hours a
month to help us? You dont have to be in
the frontline, so to speak just volunteering
for one morning a month to help at one of
the Table-Top Sales would be so helpful.

However, as a charity there is always more

that we would like to do so we would really
appreciate your donations. We are short
of small items such as bric-a-brac and
small electrical items. Larger items can be
collected by Richard, who can be located
loitering on Camposol B, lower car park,
opposite the garage on Tuesdays 10am12pm. If you do buy some of our lovely
furniture, Richard will valiantly endeavour
to deliver them for a small fee. He is very
old and alone (he really needs help - if you
have any spare time Richard would be very
grateful) and its a good job he is built like
a gorilla!

One thing in this life that does annoy

me is gossip!
I was brought up to know that to gossip is
so wrong and to realise how we can hurt a
person and tear them down by a few words
of gossip. Gossip can be very malicious.
In the bible in the book of Proverbs chapter
16 verse 28, it says A trouble-maker
plants seeds of strife. Gossip separates
the best of friends.

Never look down on anyone unless

you are helping them up.

you do? Ignore it/confront it? Get hurt or

destroyed?

Someone hears a bit of gossip and Chinese

whispers begin. By the time it has arrived
at the person being gossiped about it has
been taken out of all context.

There are those who will always gossip.

It saddens me and yes I do get hurt by
gossip, but as long as I know there is no
truth in it, it is best to ignore it!

Jesus was in the same position when He

was in front of Pilot. Jesus was wrongly
accused and lied about with trumped up
charges. He took all this without a word.
He took all our sins upon that cruel cross
that we may be forgiven.

I pray that the Lord will protect you

from unfair gossip.

I bet you all know about sin. Many would

see sin as an adulterer, rapist, murderer,
etc. Well, gossip is in the same category.
Psalm 34 verse 13 says Then keep your
tongue from speaking evil and your lips
from telling lies. The tongue is very
powerful; we need to take heed and think
before we speak.

So many people have been hurt and

even destroyed by gossip. Remember
God not only sees everything but hears
everything also.

On the cover of my bible I have this saying

If gossip is being aired about you what do

The Convenience Of The New European

Will
Until the entry into force of the Regulation
650/2012, the law ruling cross-border
successions was the one contained in the
article 9.8 of the Spanish Civil Code. This
article records a personal conception on
succession rights, being applicable the
national law of the deceased which, at some
points like inheritance of real properties,
entered into a positive conflict with the
law of the State in which the real estate
is located. According to this, an English
national who owns a property in Spain and
deceases in Spain would have his property
applied by the Spanish succession law,
whilst the English succession law would be
applied to the rest of his assets.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

The Regulation 650/2012 substitutes

the content of the article 9.8 CC on
determination of the applicable law and
settling positive conflicts of cross-border
laws.
The aim of this Regulation is to avoid
conflicts by simplifying and unifying criteria
on the law applicable to the succession in
every Member State of the European Union

be applied.

The main improvement is the change

of the criteria of the national law as the
law applicable to the succession abintestatum. This is, in absence of a formal
will of the deceased, by the law of the
habitual residence of the deceased at the
moment of the death. Note that fiscal and
administrative matters would be expressly
excluded from the scope of this Regulation.

The importance of the above mentioned

specification arises specially when dealing
with the legitimate inheritances: the part
of the inheritance which the Spanish Law
on Succession reserves to determined
relatives of the deceased. One of the main
advantages of the English Law on this
issue is the freedom of will, something to
which anyone would like to renounce! This
is why it is very important to determine
on the will the criteria to determine the
law ruling the succession and the law
ruling its validity and admissibility: if the
Nationality is chosen as the connection
point to determine the content and validity
of the succession by an English citizen,
he can freely dispose of his assets in his
will without having to worry about the socalled legitimate parts of the inheritance.

With regards to the testate succession,

the Regulation offers to the cross-border
resident the possibility to choose the law of
any other State - not necessarily Member
of the EU - to rule his succession, as well
as any of the connection points different
from the general one - habitual residence.
In addition, the testator may also choose
the law applicable to the material validity
and admissibility of his will. Thus, this
English testator who lives in Spain can
determine whether this succession will be
executed according to Spanish Law, but
the validity of its content will be examined
under the criteria of English Legislation. In
absence of any specification on this point,
the law ruling the whole succession would

The Regulation offers to the testators the

possibility of free disposal of their goods
and properties by the enactment and
registration of the new European Will, also
promoting the formulation of inheritance
contracts.
The Regulation breaks barriers and
obstacles to free circulation through the
enactment of the European Certificate of
Succession, with which numerous practical
problems of cross-border movements will
be avoided.
To sum up; the success of the European
Commission on the creation of this new
is to be recognised, as a strong and
useful guarantee of juridical security and
inheritance universality.

According to the Chinese Zodiac 2016, this

New Year is from February 8th and ends on
January 27th 2017. It is clear that this year

predicted that the traditional Chinese red is a

It is associated with adventure, smartness,

As many of you will know, KP

Computers started 18 months ago by
Paul Hughes and Kirsty Ford. We started
working from home doing house calls
only. 13 months ago we approached
the proprietors of the Laundry Shop on
Camposol D sector to be able to rent
space within their premises. We felt this
was a good fit as they already had an
internet caf onsite.
KP Computers pride themselves on
being able to provide excellent products
at good prices with outstanding customer
service. They will only sell products that
suits the customers needs.

In August 2015 KP Computers decided

that they would also sell electronics and
air conditioning and this is when Cuatro
was born (Air Conditioning, Computers,
Electronics and Internet). Being IT
geeks, Paul and Kirsty felt that it would
be best to team up with two other
businesses; one being an electronics
company in Totana with 35 years of
experience of supplying white goods and
satellite installations as well as repairs
to TVs and white goods; the second is
a local air conditioning business that
has the experience, including FGAS
qualification and is one of the most
recommended people in the area.

What does this mean for you the

customer?
KP Computers and Cuatro bring
together the names you can trust!
You get a person qualified and
experienced in the appropriate service
you require.
No promotional prices or gimmicks - you
will get the best price all year around.
One point of contact any issues
or queries will be dealt with by KP
Computers and Cuatro including any
manufacturers warranty issues.
We look forward to seeing you in the
future.

In the first quarter of 2015, whilst

trying to find suitable Internet for our
shop, we met with a few local providers
with the understanding that if we were
happy with their service we would
be happy to go into partnership with
them. After meeting with the Directors
of WiMAX Online we were happy with
their commitment to the service and to

Camposol and we signed a contract with

them to enable us to sell their services.
10 months on we still believe we made
the right choice and that we are now
able to offer an Internet service which is
both fast and reliable.

Privileged Stay With Queen Elizabeth II

At Windsor Castle For HRHS Felipe And
Letizia
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip will put
their Spanish counterparts up at Windsor
Castle, when they visit the UK, a privilege
granted to very few heads of State. The nowabdicated King Juan Carlos I and his wife,
Queen Sofa stayed at Windsor 30 years
ago when they visited the Queen and their
son and successor, King Felipe VI and his
wife, Queen Letizia will be given the same
distinguished treatment.
Britains longest-reigning monarch normally
puts up national leaders at Buckingham
Palace, which she has never made any
secret about the fact she finds cold and
uncomfortable. Privacy is nearly impossible
because of the literally hundreds of staff and
the iconic central London building is mainly
the Royal workplace, but Windsor Castle
which is in fact more of a walled-in village
and about 25 miles west of the British capital
is the Queens favourite residence. She has
been spending weekends there for decades,
but in recent years has taken to spending
weeks at a time at Windsor.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Among the privileged few who got to stay at

Elizabeth IIs true home include former Emir
of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani
and his wife, Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser alMissned, who visited the UK in 2010, and
Irish Prime Minister Michael Higgins in April
2014 when he made an official trip to London
to finally seal a peace declaration between
the British capital and Dublin.
A formal dinner-dance will be given in honour
of King Felipe and Queen Letizia at Windsor
when they arrive on March 8th and a later
one will be arranged by the Lord Mayor of
London and the City of London Corporation
in accordance with the set protocol for State
visits, which happen around twice a year. The
Spanish monarchs will also meet with British
PM David Cameron and their visit, which
concludes on March 10th, will involve at least
one celebration to mark the 4th centenary of
each countrys most iconic authors, William
Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes.
Spains and Britains Royals are distantly
related, through Queen Sofa, who is in fact
Greek and the Duke of Edinburgh.
Barcelona And Madrid Joint Second
Shopping Tourism Destinations
Hitting the January sales elsewhere in Europe
has joined city breaks, skiing and relaxing on
the beach as one of the most popular forms
of tourism. Top of the list for sales tourism,
according to TripAdvisor, is Paris, followed by
Rome, London and Madrid.

Top of the list for the cheapest shopping in

Europe is the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, followed
by the Slovakian capital of Bratislava. Ease
and comfort of the shopping experience is
also mostly found in Eastern Europe with
the Turkish cross-continental city of Istanbul
being number one.
Quality of hotels and public transport is top
in London, followed by Copenhagen, but
Barcelona comes third.
Spains two largest cities, unsurprisingly,
score well on climate as well as culture, with
Barcelona fourth and Madrid sixth
TripAdvisor travellers found London hotels to
be the most expensive, a long way ahead of
Paris. Madrid is by no means the cheapest,
but hotels in the Spanish capital cost less
than half those of London.
Transplant Carried Out Every Two Hours
In Spains Hospitals
Spain has been global number one for organ
donations for the past 24 years. In 2014, a
total of 1,682 donations were made, rising to
1,851 in 2015, with transplant operations up
by 9.4% and reaching historic highs in terms
of kidney, liver and lung replacements.
Of the 1,851 annual donors, 17% were
clinically dead with no heartbeat when
their organs were taken, as opposed to either
brain-dead patients whose hearts are kept
beating by life support so that their organs
are still functioning, or those who are alive
when they donate, such as a kidney or a
small portion of the liver. In nearly two-thirds
of cases, donors have died from strokes or
brain haemorrhages and a sharp decline has
been seen in the number of donors who died
in car crashes just 4.2% of the total, the
lowest in Spains transplant history.
Waiting lists for organs have risen since
2012, but fell in the last year whilst donors
are on the rise, the number of patients
who need transplants is rising even faster.
Although Murcia is only at number six out
of the countrys 17 regions for donors per
million dwellers, its main hospital, the Virgen
de la Arrixaca , receives the highest number
of organs in the country.
AIDS Vaccine Research In Spain
The Catalunya-based investigation centre,
Hivacat, has amassed 11.5 million from
an investment fund group made up of the
capital risks management department of La
Caixa bank, the toiletries giant Johnson &
Johnson, and the biotechnology fund Ysios
Capital.
Initial
testing,
followed by clinical
trials, is likely to start
within five years and,
if the experiment is a
success, the vaccine
could be on the market
between seven and 10
years from now.
The inoculation does
not prevent people
from contracting HIV,
but is expected to cure
those who already
have it, preventing
their condition from

Page 32

turning into AIDS and meaning patients

should no longer have to take anti-retroviral
medication for the rest of their lives as they
do at present.
First Play-Park For Disabled Children To
Be Set Up In Madrid
Only one park for children with disabilities
exists in the capital at present, but is
privately-owned. A bill of law passed towards
the end of 2013 gives until next year for all
public areas to be fully accessible for the
disabled.
The move has come largely from Luca
Santos, one of the area councillors for the
reigning left-wing independent party Ahora
Madrid, who has personal experience of the
need for better disabled facilities.
Feral Cat Care And Management Scheme
Launched In Madrid
A pioneering programme to ensure the
protection of feral cat colonies in Madrid
will be run by the councils health and
environmental
departments,
involving
sterilising, chipping and feeding.
Continuing from the Zero Abandonment
programme launched just over a year ago,
which campaigns against animals being
dumped on the street a criminal offence
which can lead to prison the scheme will
be run with the help of veterinary faculties
at the Complutense and Alfonso X El Sabio
universities, the Municipal Police, the
regional government, Madrid Veterinary
College, the Guardia Civils environmental
wing SEPRONA, and the Federation of Animal
Shelters, FAPAM.
It has already been decided that a team will
be responsible for capturing feral cats, fitting
them with microchips, sterilising them and
humanely marking them by cutting off the
point of one ear under anaesthetic so that
they can be easily identified afterwards.
They will then be re-released into their
original habitat, or new ones will be created
in areas safer for the animals away from
heavy traffic and where they will not cause
a nuisance to local residents.
Guardians will be appointed to monitor the
cats. Feeding will be with dry biscuits only
to ensure the area remains clean, cutting
down on the proliferation of flies, ants and
maggots which wet food attracts, especially
in summer. The guardian will also make
sure the cats have some kind of shelter from
the elements if they need it. The cats will
be left in the habitats they are used to, but
if residents complain, the cats will be moved
en masse to another area.
Archaelogical Dig In Huelva Pillaged
Illegal digging in an archaeological site
in SW Huelva, Europes oldest city, by
building companies is causing concern.
The digging up of sand from the site for
use as construction material could be by
the engineering companies building a new
railway station in the area.
Permits for the excavation are still waiting
to be granted and the Seminario-La Orden
settlement of around 230,000sq mtrs
contains thousands of building structures
thought to date back to prehistoric times.
These include two sets of idols with 29
statuettes per pair, believed to originate to
about 3,000BC.

On our last route of the year we first went

to the bakery of Jose Maria in Caada de la
Cruz where we were able to enjoy delicious
tasting savoury and sweet Christmas snacks
made in the family bakery. The proximity
of the winter solstice, also coincidentally
coinciding with the celebration of modern
Christmas, meant our hosts had to prepare
a commodity that is only saleable at this
time of the year.
We began to walk through the landscapes
around Caada de la Cruz. We headed to
Puerto Alto, with the bulk of Revolcadores to
our right and the Cuerda de la Gitana, our
destiny and the Stone of Moratalla to the left.
Our walk took us no lower than 1400mts.
The bulk of Revolcadores, Sierra Seca, is
home to the highest point of Murcia, the
Bishops Peak, rising no less than 2,015mts,
but we saw it in perspective with a birds
eye view of its height, so we opted to climb
the Cuerda de la Gitana which afforded us a
glance at Albacete.

We began our walk in the remains of a

toll or medieval custom place where the
movement of people, goods and livestock
were controlled, near the border with
the last Muslim kingdom. Also known as
Puerto del Conejo, there are stories of old
battles that occurred there. An even older
story took us to the Argrico world. It was
a wonderful corner of our geography; the
kind that made us forget the rest of the
arid region. Dolomites, due to erosion,
had set up a sort of natural castle strewn
with large oaks. We kept going, but the
climb was more difficult than usual and we
followed the contours to make it as smooth
as possible. On terraces, really rare in our
natural forests, we saw some examples of
wild pines with their curious reddish trunks.
The Majuelos, completely devoid of their
leaves, were adorned only with bright red
berries.
We looked for a way near to the peak of the
Cocorotes. It was drizzling when we began
to walk, but the rain soon disappeared and
the sun warmed us. We sought the shelter
of the rocky projections for lunch before
tackling the last stretch of climb, which
was much more moderate. The Corsican
pines were the main plant world at this
point, although the severity of the weather
had wreaked havoc on some of them,
deformed them like bonsai giving them the
appearance of strange giant mushrooms.
Another important plant element that can
be seen in these summits is the Juniperus
communis.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

La Cuerda de la
Gitana
was
fairly
flat and longitudinal,
stretching
from
west to east, which
offered
a
great
catchment area for
the
magnificent
Griffon vultures. It is
surprising, that also
with a little help from
man, buzzards and
osprey will soon be
reoccupying these old
areas for foraging and
breeding.

Page 34

Finally we reached the highest point, after

the Stone of Moratalla, right in front of
Bishops and Revolcadores, two of the three
peaks of Sierra Seca. From the luxury of our
vantage point the Sierra Seca did not seem
so high, nor did the Sierra de las Cabras
and the neighbouring Taibilla Albacete. It
was then time to go back and resume our
walk, seeking the safest possible way by the
scree for our descent.

Finally
we
descended
to
reach a large
twisted Corsican
pine,
which
supported
in
its bark some
spectacular
examples
of
leaf-shaped
lichens
which
grew lush due
to the humidity.
The descent took
us into the oak
forest that grew
on the side of
the mountain. As we lost height, geology
gave us two new elements, native iron and
flint. We had almost finished our route, but
we made two interesting discoveries; a
huge rift which served as a refuge for some
of our ancestors and a compartment like
a hideaway, which is accessed by a stony
staircase, an easy defence from the highest
point.
We descended in search of our cars headed
to the bar Camacho Caada de la Cruz to
enjoy the memories of the day and plan
new adventures for 2016.

Processional Caterpillars
These deadly caterpillars love to nest in
relatively young pine trees and because
of the mild weather this year, there are
many nests and they are causing a lot of
damage. They can be deadly to animals
if ingested. The animal will most likely
have a serious reaction which can result in
death if not treated immediately. The local
councils are supposed to spray the trees,
but this has not happened in many areas.

If you spot any nests in trees near you, you

are advised not to touch them as the hairs
from the caterpillars can cause a serious
allergic reaction. Call the Department of
Environment on 968 775 001.

Bogus Gas Men

The police have issued a warning to
elderly and vulnerable householders in the
region not to open their doors to workmen
claiming they are from the gas companies.
The advice is If you havent called
them, dont let them in.
The men pose as technicians from the
gas company, telling householders the
danger of faulty appliances or out of date
tubes. Once they gain access to your
property they look out for anything to
steal like money and jewellery. They also
charge exorbitant prices for unnecessary
work. If you receive a phone call,
purporting to be from a utility company,
local or regional government or offering
a cash prize, do not give out personal

information or bank details. Contact the

National Police on 091 if you are unsure.

Free Nature Walks

What better way to get fit and finding out
more about the beautiful area of Northwest
Murcia, than going on one of the many free
walks organised by the local Town Halls and

A remarkable example of cave art near Cieza

is to be found in the Barranco de los Grajos.
Access is only possible as part of a guided
tour with the caves (or abrigos) in question
securely fenced off with a locked gate and
entrance. There are visits to the paintings
arranged (though normally in Spanish) and
we booked our places on one after enquiring
at the Cieza Tourist Office (tel 968 453 500).

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

The paintings in question are to be found in

the Sierra de Ascoy just to the north west
of the town. The slopes of this Sierra are
crossed by incisions, one of which is the
Barranco de los Grajos. To reach the site
we (and four others) met our guide just off
the Albacete Motorway (leaving at km 98),
at a prominent restaurant, before heading
up into the hills. After a few kilometres on a
perfectly reasonable minor road, a very rough
track, sign posted Barranjo de los Grajos,
left to the right. For almost 4 kilometres we
had a very rough drive on an extremely stony
and pitted track which required great care,
although the final part was marginally less
difficult!

were discovered in 1962. Several hundred

metres further up the gorge, is Abrigo III.
This is much more difficult to access (no
doubt why the guided tours avoid it) and
contains relatively few figures (six) which are
themselves very small. In the Copper Age, it
is known that this cave was used for burials.
The paintings in these caves date back to
the Neolithic era and form part of the postPalaeolithic rock art in the east of Spain which
was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage
site in 1998. Although we talk of cave art,
in general, paintings such as the ones in the
Barranjo de los Grajos are to be found
in relatively shallow rock shelters rather
than enclosed caves as we would normally
envisage.
Abrigo II was inhabited from Palaeolithic to
early medieval times and, as well as paintings
from Neolithic times, Roman (Latin) writing
has been identified on one wall. There is
also a very childish drawing of a man dated
to Roman times and one, in a worse state of
preservation, of a woman. Close to these
drawings, there is another, in black, thought
to be of a donkey. Astonishingly, this is not all
and a little further into the cave is a painting,
also in black, of what has been identified as
a medieval knight with sword and dated to
the 15th Century. However, one of the most
impressive drawings from prehistoric times,
in the normal red tones, is to be seen to the
left on entering the abrigo and is of a bending
man. This is very much a schematic figure (ie
lacking detail and a realistic depiction of the
human shape) whereas the range of paintings
to be found in the Barranjo are generally
described as Levantine or Naturalistic (where
there is an attempt to depict a more realistic
body shape especially of the arms and legs,
and clothing may be shown).

Once at the spot where you park, you are

almost immediately overlooking the barranjo,
or, in simple English, gorge. This limestone
gorge is indeed a very impressive feature.
The only problem is that you then have to
descend the steep side for several tens of
metres of altitude, climbing down the rock
into the bottom of the narrow valley. In truth,
this is not especially difficult, but it is both
steep and requires care and could certainly
be a problem for those with a fear of slopes
and height. There are white painted arrows
at points on the rock to try and help you find
the easiest route down even so, we were
told by our guide that some minor accidents
had occurred!
Also, as you would expect, the state of
preservation of the paintings varies and
some are only partially visible. Rock falls
and erosion have clearly taken their toll and,
as you will notice looking around, there are
remnants of more modern graffiti which were
done before the abrigos were given their
current protection.

Once in the bottom of the gorge, you walk a

short distance along it, before a short ascent
to the first, and larger, of the two caves which
you visit, which is known as Abrigo II. There
are, in fact, three such abrigos. The two
which we visited are very close to each other,
relatively near the mouth of the gorge, and

Page 36

On leaving Abrigo II, you descend some

steps and walk along the valley bottom track
to reach the very impressive Abrigo I. This
cave contains two main panels of paintings,
in Levantine style, in alcoves on either side
of the entrance. To the left of the entrance
as you go in, the representation of a female
figure is very clear and there are other items
including an animal depicted. The painting
here is thought to represent a scene possibly
of two women chasing a goat type creature
but, as in all these cases, interpretation of
significance today is very difficult.
The large panel of paintings on the other

side of the cave, however, is stunning. It is

two metres long with over 50 figures painted
on it and is rightly regarded as one of the
most important rock paintings of its type
in Spain, containing both naturalistic and
schematic figures. There are various human
representations, including that of a woman
with some sort of bag. Animal depictions
include a jabali/striped pig (one of only two
known in Spain) and a quite spectacular deer.
The naturalistic drawings are said to date as
far back as 7000 BC and the schematic to
5000 BC.

One particular interest in this panel is the

group of women, with skirts, dancing with
their hands and arms in the air. There is also
a group of men apparently in procession.
However, four of the five men in this part of
the panel are headless! Whether this has any
significance or is just a result of erosion and
natural processes is not known. The painting
has been interpreted as related to fertility
rites though, again, this is uncertain. What
is clear, however, is that it is the only such
painting of a ritual dance in Spain. At one
end of the panel you will see a strange figure
which has been interpreted by some as being
a human with a pole-like object ascending
skywards, perhaps in an attempt to link with
the world beyond!
Having taken
in as much
as you can,
all that then
remains
is
to
descend
from
the
cave to the
valley
floor
and
ascend
e q u a l l y
carefully up
the
steep
valley
side
back to the
car for the
interesting
drive
back
toward Cieza.
Although this
visit requires
some physical flexibility (as well as very
careful driving to the parking point!) it is one
which is amply rewarding.

Wellspring Victory Church would like
to thank all the local businesses who
contributed to an amazing series of open

need around our local area, making their
Christmas and New Year more bearable.
Your giving this year, along with the folk

Our main aim is to raise as much money

as possible for various charities in and
around the region. For those who dont
know about us, on 28th August last year, we
were happily involved with the Camposol
Medieval Fiesta as the main event of
the evening.
This was a resounding
success,
and
consequently,
should
another Fiesta be held this August, we
have been asked back to perform again.
We were then approached by a relatively
new charity, Help The Poor, who work
in conjunction with the local Lions. This
event took place at Marianos on 26th

November.
This again was a hugely
successful evening, as we raised around
1,000 for this worthwhile event.
Many
thanks to everyone whose generous
donations of food and clothing will help all
those people less fortunate than ourselves,
particularly over the winter period.

Our next short performance took place

at Oscars for MABS at their fair on
28th November.
This again was well
received and we managed to raise
70 in the space of half-an-hour to go
towards MABSs superb hard work and
dedication in helping cancer patients.
Our final performance of the year took
place at The Clover Bar on 4th December
- again, raising money for Help The Poor.
Many thanks for the people who donated
clothing and food. The monies raised came
to 600. Apart from the choir thoroughly
enjoying performing, it was very satisfying
for us all to have raised so much money for
this charity.
Our repertoire seems to be loved by people
everywhere we go and with new songs
planned for our new term it will soon be
even bigger and better. The Harlequin
Rock Choir has over 40 members, but
we are always looking for new members
(particularly you guys to join our small
male section!).
We will be starting
up again in earnest on Saturday 6th
February at Camposol Cultural Centre at
1.15pm. Anyone who feels they can sing or
would like to sing and would like to be part
of a great fun loving team, whilst lowering
your stress levels and raising money for
charity, then please come and join us. You
will be most welcome. It is a good time to
come along as we will all be learning our
new songs together. We hope you will give
it a try.
We promise you will be glad you
did!

There are many traditions and tales

associated with St Valentines Day:
The first man an unmarried woman
saw on 14th February would be her
future husband.
If the names of all a girls suitors
were written on paper and wrapped
in clay and the clay put into water,
the piece that rose to the surface
first would contain the name of her
husband-to-be.
If a woman saw a robin flying
overhead on St Valentines Day,
it meant she would marry a sailor.
If she saw a sparrow, she would
marry a poor man and be very
happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she
would marry a rich person.

The ancient Romans celebrated the

Feast of Lupercalia on February 14th
in honour of Juno, the Queen of the
Roman gods and goddesses. Juno
was also the goddess of women and
marriage.

Girls in medieval times ate bizarre

foods on St Valentines Day to
make them dream of their future
spouse.
In the Middle Ages, young men and
women drew names from a bowl to
see who would be their Valentine.
They would wear this name pinned
onto their sleeves for one week for
everyone to see. This was the origin
of the expression to wear your
heart on your sleeve.
In 1537, Englands King Henry VII
officially declared February 14th the
holiday of St Valentines Day.

Casanova, well known as The

Worlds

ate
chocolate to make him virile.

Physicians
of
the 1800s commonly
advised their patients

Some religious activists in India and

They view it as a Western holiday in

decorations. The word lace comes
from the Latinlaques, meaning
to snare or net, as in to catch a

Throughout history, there have
been approximately eight St

special feast days in their honour.
The two St Valentines who most
likely inspired St Valentines Day
are Valentine of Terni and Valentine
of Rome, though some scholars
speculate they are actually one
person.

Chocolate is associated with festivals

such as Easter and Christmas, when
moulded chocolate rabbits, eggs and Father
Christmases are traditionally given in Christian
communities and Chocolate hearts and
Chocolate in heart-shaped boxes are popular
on St Valentines Day.

Because the cocoa mass is usually liquefied

before being moulded with or without other
ingredients, it is called Chocolate liquor.

Chocolate is also used in cold and hot

beverages. Although cocoa originated in the
Americas, today Western Africa produces
almost two-thirds of the worlds cocoa,
with the Ivory Coast growing almost half of it.
While Columbus had taken cacao beans with
him back to Spain, Chocolate made no
impact until Spanish friars introduced it to
the Spanish court. After the Spanish conquest
of the Aztecs, Chocolate was imported to
Europe. It was still served as a beverage,
but the Spanish added sugar and honey, to
counteract the natural bitterness. Vanilla
was also a popular additive, with pepper
and other spices sometimes used to give the
illusion of a more potent vanilla flavour. By
1602, Chocolate had made its way from
Spain to Austria and by 1662 the Bishop of
Rome had declared that religious fasts were
not broken by consuming Chocolate drinks.
Within about a hundred years, Chocolate
established a foothold throughout Europe.
The new craze for Chocolate brought with
it a thriving slave market, as between the
early 1600s and late 1800s, the laborious
and slow processing of the cacao bean was
manual. Cacao plantations spread, as the

trees are small trees that need rich, welldrained soils. They naturally grow within

a family favourite and always comes out
when its time to make a birthday cake and
I must admit to getting carried away with
the decorations on the top. My recipe for
Banoffee Pie is one I copied from someone
else, but again very easy and I have put
the Spanish name for Caramel just in case
you think it is not available in Spain?
Buen Apetito
Banoffee Pie
250g Digestive Biscuits
100g Butter
400g Dulce de Leche (caramel)
2 Bananas
300ml Whipping Cream
2tbsp Grated Plain Chocolate

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Melt the butter gently in a small pan or

microwave. Peel and slice the bananas.
Whip the cream to soft peaks. Place the
biscuits into a strong food bag and crush
with a rolling pin. Alternatively put in a food
process and pulse until finely crumbed.
Transfer crumbs to a mixing bowl and
stir in the melted butter. Place the crumb
mixture into a lightly greased 20cm loosebottomed cake tin and press down with
your fingers around the edges and along
the sides. Place in the fridge to chill for
about 30 minutes. Spoon the dulce de
leche over the biscuit crumb base. Cover
the caramel with a layer of sliced bananas.
Spoon the whipped cream on top of the
layer of bananas and grate the chocolate
over the top. Serve immediately or chill for
around 30 minutes more in the fridge.
Marshmallow Brownies
240g butter
150g dark chocolate
60g cocoa or drinking chocolate
150g plain flour

cake and decorate, or double the butter

cream quantities and spread the top with
butter cream and decorate.

Melt the butter and chocolate together

very gently. Mix the cocoa with the flour
and the sugar and, taking the butter off
the heat, mix together. Mix in the beaten
eggs and fold in the marshmallows. Turn
the mixture into the tin and bake in the
oven 190 for 20 minutes or until cooked.
Allow to cool and slice.

Rum Truffles
100g trifle sponges
4 tbsp rum
4 tbsp black coffee
25g slivered almonds
1 tbsp icing sugar
25g butter
100g strong chocolate
Chocolate strands to decorate

Ma Millbanks Chocolate Cake

200g butter
200g caster sugar
4 eggs
150g self-rising flour
50g cocoa
1 heaped tsp baking powder
Chocolate for top of cake
Heat oven to 190. Beat the butter until
creamy, add the sugar and again beat
until creamy. Sieve flour, cocoa and baking
powder in a bowl and leave to one side.
Add eggs 1 at a time with a spoonful of
flour, (this will stop curdling). When all
eggs mixed in, add the remaining flour, but
mix only until a smooth mixture. Too much
mixing will lose all the air in the mixture.
Pour into two cake tins and when oven is at
temperate, cook for 20 minutes or when a
sharp knife comes out clean. Do not open
the oven door before at least 15 minutes
or cake will drop.
Butter Cream
100g butter
50g icing sugar
50g cocoa powder
Cream butter and add sieved icing sugar
and cocoa until smooth. If too runny add
more icing sugar; if too stiff add a few
drops of cold water. Wait until cake sponge
is cold before applying the butter cream.

Dice the sponges and place in shallow

dish. Grill nuts for 5 minutes, turning until
toasted. Allow to cool. Put icing sugar
and butter into a bowl and beat together.
Add the sponge, juices and almonds and
mix well. Set aside. Break chocolate into
squares and place in a glass heat proof
bowl over a pan of hot water. Leave until
melted and stir until smooth, remove from
the heat and mix into sponge mixture.
Set aside to cool until firm enough to roll.
Using a spoon, scoop out a small portion
and roll into a ball. Roll in the chocolate
strands and place in a paper case.

Humanists of Murcia Walk

The walk started off disastrously as the
heavens (Surely, skies: Ed) opened
the day before and Audrey immediately
banned the Rambla de Algeciras as it
would be full of water. Then there was
a long cyber-discussion on whether to
change the meeting point/walk/lunch etc.
After consulting with the Alhama de Murcia
Cycle Club (Vegetarian Section), it was
decided to overrule Audreys advice and
walk East along the canal path.

further information was reported on the

reminder of the walk, but the consensus
reckoned it was most enjoyable.

The cancellations started: Jon (Stitches),

Avril (Lost in IKEA), Jan (Black eye), Barrie
(No wife), 3 people from Almeria (No
border documents) and finally Bernice had
too many G & Ts the night before. (That
was what Jim said).

The next walk will be in Almeria Province,

led by Mike, if they can agree a date
and route, and the March walk will be, by
special request of Mike Lee, the Rambla
beside El Pareton and a meal.

In the end, 20 walkers turned up at La

Taberna de Lucia in Librilla and began
walking; not East along the canal path,
but up the hill straight to the Mirador

overlooking the Embalse The Blue

Lagoon. There Rhian did a spiel about
Humanists business and John read out
Jons facts about the date 16th January.

10 Easy Tips Architects Use To Detect

Undeclared Or Illegal Extensions

roofed structures; therefore check its

the right type of licence.

If you are purchasing a property in Spain

its essential to;
A - make sure the property doesnt have an
illegal extension or pool and B - is properly
described in the Title Deeds with its
complete build size registered in the Land
Registry.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

The lunch was in Restaurante Lo Pagan on

the edge of the A-7, where 22 people sat
down to lunch. It was not as good a meal
as November 2014; a little rushed and
not a great choice, although to be fair, the
staff were confused by Vincents eventual
choice of main course. Lots of red wine
thats the main thing.

Often a solicitor will base their conveyancing

on the propertys dimensions via official
bodies in charge of council tax/property
taxes, but more often than not they are
not actually up to date. Therefore its very
important to follow these tips:

Ask the Vendors if (and when) theyve

had any extension or pool done.

Ask if they applied for licences and make

sure these licences are correct.

To declare a property extension or pool,

not only a licence is needed, but also the
certificate by an architect signing off the
build after completion (Certificado Final
de Obra). That is most often missing
so should be requested.

Minor or small works licences OBRA

MENOR are not sufficient for covered/

Page 50

Always check a pool as they are generally

not declared or properly licensed.

Please note that glassed enclosures of

terraces do increase the build size of a
property and therefore should have a
licence and appear in the Title Deeds.

Underbuilds,
sheds,
carports,
workshops,
outside
kitchens
and
exterior storage areas are very rarely
declared correctly in the Land Registry
or have proper licences. Again double
check.

Be aware that covered structures

attached to the boundary walls are
usually not licensed or declared
correctly.

Check the description in the Title Deeds

for the dimensions and compare with
the physical property measurements to
make sure they match.

Give your solicitor an exact description

of the property, (i.e. if two storey,
number of bedrooms, bathrooms, sheds,
pools, etc.,) and ask them to guarantee
what you are buying is exactly what is
declared in the Title Deeds.
In all those scenarios
the document needed
is
a
Certificate
of
Antiquity
also
known
as
a
Retrospective
Licence,
used
to
guard
against
sanctions in cases
of lacking a priorto-building
work
licence and needed in
order to update the
propertys description
in Title Deeds & Land

Solicitors dont inspect the premises (and

usually dont compare notes with the Estate
Agent) and dont have the tools such as
lasers and GPS equipment to measure a
property, so please contact Martinez de

you are purchasing. For only 84 (incl IVA)
we include an on-site inspection survey and
laser measuring if needed, giving you and
your solicitor a verbal answer within 72hrs
of the inspection. Certified information is
also provided for 250 (+ IVA), although
when we detect extensions its advisable
just to have a Retrospective Licence.
Cost of a Certificate of Antiquity/
Retrospective licence for pools is 190
(+IVA) and extensions or complete
properties 270 (+IVA).
Discounts are
available for existing Martinez de la Casa

Please be aware that if you dont detect any
illegal/non-declared extensions or pools

BERTIE
This boy is a bundle of cuteness who spent
far too long in the Perrera. He is a GDS
cross approx 4 months old and is going to
be a biggish boy. He is very loving and we
feel will make a lovely and loyal dog. He
is already really good on the lead and in
the car. Bertie has been fully vaccinated.
Adoption or foster is subject to a home

MILO
This fantastic Lurcher pup now 6 months
old was near deaths door when he was
taken to the Perrera and then rescued and
fostered by Janet who has done a fantastic
job. Milo has lots of energy and when he
runs its a sight to behold, although he can
also be clumsy and sometimes his long legs
are all over the place. He loves cuddles,
food and running, so a family who like to
walk would be great. He has excellent
recall. Milo is now fully vaccinated and has
a passport. Adoption or foster is subject to
a home check.

Yes we did it!! For those of you who read

TILLY
A beautiful miniature Podenco approx
9 months old who we rescued from the
Perrera like a bag of bones and shivering.
She is a quiet girl who is now spayed, fully
vaccinated and has a passport. She is a
dream on the lead and adores her runs,
loves her food and is really relaxed. Tilly
would suit an older active couple who also
enjoy a good walk. Her recall is excellent.

the pink, as those of you who were there
will remember. Very atmospheric!

ZAK
Sue walks the Perrera dogs on a Monday
and had the pleasure of walking this
gorgeous boy who does not pull on the
lead, and walks to heel. We thought we had
found him a perfect home, but that proved
not to be the case and we asked for him
back, so he is now looking for his forever
home. He is a full GSD and his date of birth
is June 2014. He is good with people and
other dogs. Zak is fully vaccinated with a
passport and castrated. Adoption or foster
is subject to a home check.

Spain for the past
of those years on

Unfortunately the English-style allotment

rented from an allotment association or
Town Hall is not a well-established tradition in Spain, although a few farsighted villages and towns are starting to set them
up. However, there is an ancient tradition
of growing vegetables on small plots huertos outside villages and towns that were
often first laid out and worked by Moors
during their 800 years residency in Spain.
Many of these have been deserted in recent years so it possible to negotiate the
buying, renting or free use of 400 or 800
square metres of land for your own use or
with a group of friends. If you wish to go
down this route to improve the availability
of daily crops of ecological vegetables on
every day of the year there are a few important things to consider:
Are the growing seasons different?
We live on the Mediterranean Coast
400 metres up and 14 kilometres from
the coast. Since we are on a south facing
slope, frost is normally not a problem so
we can have 60% of the soil fully planted
throughout the year taking advantage of
the two springs spring and autumn to
grow two or more crops of things like carrots, potatoes, broccoli, onions, lettuces
etc. By the way broad beans and peas are
planted in the autumn for January to early May harvests here in Spain. The other
40% is fully used in the summer when we
grow expansive squash and melons. Were
we on the north facing slope of our valley,
the reduced hours of sun and sometimes
heavy frosts would reduce significantly
what we could grow during the winter;
likewise if we were on the high inland plain
or in the north of Spain. In the far south,
regular temperatures of 40 to even 50
degrees can make it difficult to keep
some traditional summer crops growing beyond early July. If we were at
sea level we would sow or plant about
a month earlier in the spring.
What else is different between Spain
and the UK for allotment growers?
Many agricultural areas have red or light
grey clay soils. The former can bake rock
hard during sunny spells all the year round
unless irrigated and worked. The grey soils
remain more open and have a greater water holding capacity. This enables crops
such as squash and melons to be grown

without watering after sowing, even under

the Spanish sun.

If one takes over a new allotment the

soil will normally require a major initial
improvement because the traditional annual manuring to lighten and enrich the
soil stopped 10 to 20 years ago when the
keeping of working mules and donkeys
and oxen ceased and the flocks of sheep
and goats declined exponentially. Chemical fertilizers became the norm as villagers
became wealthier, but are now becoming
overly expensive in relation to the prices
they can get if crops are sold.
There are fewer types and varieties of
seeds available and very few sparsely
available seed catalogues for amateur
gardeners exist. Traditionally Spaniards
grew few types and only the family/village
varieties handed down over the generations. We aim to use organic seeds where
we can, so we save our own seeds where
practical, tap into a local government seed
bank, use anything offered to us by locals
and fill gaps with imported seeds.
Sheep and goat manures were the norm,
but there are now more horse stables
wanting to get rid of manure. Pelleted
chicken manure is not generally available,
but in our area there are many commercial
chicken houses where it is possible to buy
a few sacks when they are cleaned out.
However, there is now a wide range of eco
fertilizers/growth promoters, pesticides
and fungicides available to the amateur
gardener possibly wider than in the UK
- having been developed/commercialised
for the export-oriented organic vegetable
growers. For interest look up www.trabe.
net as a starter.

instance, leaf crops can be planted out in

the autumn and will over-winter without
going to seed until the hotter weather of
spring. However, one has to watch out for
widely yo-yoing daily temperatures and
between successive days, especially during the winter and early spring. Winter
does not change to spring as gradually as
in the UK. Indeed it is possible to experience several winter/spring/winter days
between December and April. We may get
less rain, but when it comes it can be for
days at a time in the spring and autumn
and of monsoon proportions. The heaviest days rainfall we have experienced is
67cms in a day with 28cms in an hour! Inland tennis ball sized hail stones can be a
problem, but the last fell in our village 24
years ago when the cars of the day ended
up with badly dented roofs.
If one asks a Spaniard when he is going
to sow or plant out X or Y, he will often
reply with a saints day or in relation to
the current cycle of the moon. The elderly
men still keeping up allotments were well
versed in the rudiments of the lunar calendar.
Just a final
word;
do
grow things
that you like,
but
check
that
they
are in fact
the vegetables with the
highest concentration
of beneficial
vitamins and
minerals.
One of the
reasons for
writing
the
book Living
Well From Our Garden Mediteranean
Style was to finally record all the information we had gathered about this. The book
is inexpensive from Amazon Books or The
Book Depository.

Its a LEAP Year

One small step for man, one giant LEAP for
mankind.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Many of us will recall the historic words

spoken by Neil Armstrong when he was the
first man to set foot on the moon on 20th
July 1969. I was reminded of this as 2016
is a LEAP year; a whole extra day for us to
enjoy in February.
In reality each year has approximately 365
and days, so by having 366 every 4 years,
with some exceptions, it keeps us on track
time-wise. I thought of other important

LEAPS over history and there have been

many important statements and speeches
throughout the years which required great
LEAPS of Faith by their orator, Martin Luther
Kings I have a dream on 28th August 1963
and Sir Winston Churchills We will fight
them on the beaches on 4th June 1940 are
two that come readily to mind. I am sure
that many of us will have heard or know of
other significant ones, many of which have
been recorded, printed and archived for
future generations.
There are many stories in the Bible that
required a great LEAP of faith by men and
women. For example, Noah was told by God
to build a ship in the desert where it never
rained. How bizarre that must have been
for him, but he was faithful even though
it was a century before the flood actually
occurred.
Moses had to hold his staff over the Red Sea
for the waters to part so that the Israelites
could escape from the pursuing Egyptians.
Joshua was told to walk around the walls of
Jericho for 7 days and on the last day do it
7 times while blowing the horns. Not what
one would envisage as a great battle plan.
Mary was obedient to God as the chosen
vessel for Christ to be born on earth.
All of the above and many more required
the recipients to take a big LEAP of faith

loved the world that He gave His one

and only son, that whoever believes in
Him shall not perish but have eternal
life.
(NIV) Encompassed in this one short verse
we are told just how much the Father loves
us and the price he was willing to pay so
that we get to spend eternity with Him. The
sacrifice that Jesus made was the biggest
LEAP of faith ever recorded in the world.
Our part to receive that gift of eternal life by
comparison is relatively easy. All we need to
do is repent of our sins, accept Christ as our
personal saviour and believe in Him. Thats
it! Living a better Christ filled life, doing
charitable deeds, loving our neighbours,
going to church and worshiping God are just
part of how we are to live after this.
Will we still make mistakes? Absolutely!
Will we still do wrong things? Thats for
sure! However, our heavenly Father is
always willing to forgive us time and time
again when we slip up. We simply need to
recognize that when it happens, say we are
sorry and simply try our best to not repeat
the same mistake.
What are your plans for the extra day
this year?
Take a meal round to a struggling neighbour?
Make that phone call to an estranged friend,
or relative or simply spend the day quietly
in communion with your Heavenly Father?
This year lets all make the best of that
extra day to do something really special for
someone else. It will certainly make them
feel better. It will also make you feel good
and most importantly our actions will be
pleasing to God; just a small step for each
of us, but if we all do it, a giant LEAP for the
community.

Hi my name is Tom. Im an adult stray cat

abandoned by my owners who went back
to England. I was lonely and very scared
for a short while until more and more of us
were left. We started to make families as
there were a lot of mice and rats and the
occasional bird from the trees, but then the
rats and mice became scarce. Life became
so difficult for me; I had to scavenge for
scraps of food and I took risks and went
into peoples gardens as I was so hungry.
Sometimes I was chased by dogs and
some property owners got upset.
We used to fight a lot over food and mating
rights. Then one day our numbers grew
very large and things got bad. We started
to catch diseases and the fighting for food
and females was getting too much for me
and many others.
Things then changed when some nice
people from Camposol Kitty Kitty left
some really nice food. All I had to do is
go in a cage, so I thought I would risk it

have been planning some great events for
2016 so below is just a taster.
A big welcome to our new members
this month. Im sure you will enjoy
the things we have planned for you.

I still get the odd mouse or a bird if I feel

like a challenge, but life is not as hard. I
still get some food from the nice people
at Camposol Kitty Kitty as there are still
very few rats and mice around (if anyones
seen any let me know and I will call on
some of my mates and we will have a
party.)
A big MIEOW and thank you to all the
residents for your donations to help
Camposol Kitty Kitty as there are plenty
more like me that need your help to stop
our population from growing too large and
let me and my mates look after the vermin.
and the cage shut. I was a little scared,
Oh no, am I going to be killed! I landed
in the local vets and I fell asleep and woke
up very drowsy. When I came around fully
I was scared again, but I got a really nice
meal from them and then I was released.
Now I have a better life. I do not bother
the female cats or father any more kittens.

This month we are happy to announce

the 4th Anniversary of our Maintenance
Scheme! Im sure everyone will agree that
Green Fingers have made a huge difference to the streets of Camposol Lower C:
newly planted areas of established trees
and shrubs, roads and pavements regularly
sprayed and swept, tarmac and block paving repairs, gravelled verges, dustbins off
roads. Its lovely to walk around our pretty
area which is no longer overgrown, though
some of the work has been back breaking!
Thanks to all our loyal Members, and if you
would like to join our scheme paying 15
per quarter, please get in touch? Wed also
like to continue to keep C tidy, so we ask,
if you have a pet, please clear up after it
and keep our area a pleasant place to stroll
around. Thanks!
Our Maintenance Team and Volunteers

2016 is proving to be a busy year for Age

Concern already. We have taken on new
clients and our need for volunteers who

took a well-earned break over the Christmas and New Year period, but now our
hard work continues into 2016. A warm
welcome must go to new volunteers Con
and Tom, who have kindly joined us on
these chilly mornings. This month we have
been weeding and spraying the upper part
of the dual carriageway, spreading 24 tons
of gravel around the roundabout, planting
12 new palms and watering all the trees
and plants. All the dried mud along the
main road by the golf club fence, as far
as the rambla bridge has also now been
cleared and swept. If our workers are
in your area, please offer your support.
Spare cash in buckets, even hot drinks and
biccies are appreciated! Were always looking for volunteers even if youre not resident and just holidaying here, youre most
welcome. We offer bacon/sausage sarnies
every Wednesday as an incentive! Please

contact John, our Chairman, on 634 325

work but can donate raffle prizes or plants,
wed love to hear from you. No offer is too
small.
By popular demand, we have arranged another Quiz Night and Beetle Drive on

Over the past year 2015 our teams of

volunteers and fund raisers have been busy
around our sector working for the benefit
of residents and holiday makers. We are
fortunate to have people who give their
time and effort and do their best to make a
difference for us all.
Our Pothole team have done a magnificent
job including levelling tarmac around manhole
covers, relayed curbing and many other jobs
on the road system. There are many jobs
scheduled around our sector.

2015 was a land mark for the Gardening team

that went above and beyond what was asked
of them. Many community gardens had to be
rebuilt, areas replanted and refurbish with 150
metric tons of gravel after the 2014 flooding.
Residents kindly donated many plants which
gave the team the opportunity to plant new
gardens, as well as maintaining existing
gardens and removing fly tipping rubbish to
the Ecoparque. We also have a weed killing
team working together with the gardening
team which is helpful when scheduling future
projects around the community.

as well as a team that store and maintain the

vast equipment. Without this service many
projects on D Sector could not be done.
We also have an Entertainment team who
have cast their net far afield to reach other
sectors and beyond Camposol. We have
had Street Parties, a Quiz Night and fund
raiser for FAST, coach trips, Spanish party
and Christmas party, all of which were well
supported and successful. Events for 2016
are in the pipeline so watch this space.
Our fund raising team (Bucketeers), who
stand out on Friday mornings, are doing a
fantastic job for the community. Throughout
the summer the team took the heat on the
chin and did not falter whilst collecting much
needed funds; on some occasions in fancy
dress.
Signs have been produced to be placed
around the sector for the dog walkers to
clean up after their dogs and signs to stop
fly tipping in our area. A new Notice Board
for has been erected across from the Jubilee
Garden as you leave Sector D.

We also have a team who maintain the

community vehicle and trailer for the
residents and the teams working in the field,

PHEW..what a busy year we had!

The end of 2015 brought an end to an
extremely busy and fulfilling year for MABS
Mazarrn.

MABS also successfully opened a new Charity

Shop in Totana.
Saw the Official opening of the first MABS
funded Hospice facility for the use of cancer
patients in the Murcia region.

Our team of volunteers worked tirelessly

throughout 2015 to assist and fund the
following:858 hospital/clinic appointments
571 translations at hospital or treatment
sessions
391 journeys in the MABS or private cars to
hospital appointments
Loaned medical and mobility equipment to 54
patients

Although MABS is a legally registered charity,

they do not receive any Local or Government

Martin Clares new comedy, The Mr.

The theatre will be sign posted from the

The fast-moving, light comedy is set mainly

however, as they say and becomes more

We have now set the programme for the

first half of the year and it is, as follows:

The Scout Motto is Be Prepared

which is excellent advice.
We prepare for things all the time in life as
none of us want to be caught off-guard. We
even prepare for our demise with Insurance,
Wills and Funeral Plans. Of course we try
and put this off if we can, taking advice
about healthy living. Unfortunately most
of what we once thought, or were told,
was good for us, is now quite unhealthy
or downright dangerous. Meat, sugar, salt,
cheese, coffee and now even red wine are
on a list of items to avoid. Carol says, the
fact is that everyone who eats and drinks
dies in the end.

If you believed all of the experts, you

would be scared to consume anything. We
are in a time of information overload. The
Old School didnt have this but managed
quite well. Dont get me wrong, balance
is sensible and I am not knocking some
control of our consumption, but I get the

feeling wars and famine probably take

more lives than too much of anything else?
As I am writing, David Bowie and Alan
Rickman have just died; both from cancer
at the age of 69. The deaths of well-known
people are a reminder that no matter
how popular, well-prepared, well-off or
influential a person is, life is finite on this
earth.
On that cheery note I want to remind you
that there is an alternative view of life
which sees this life as preparation for the
next. The Bible talks a lot about being
prepared and Jesus said John the Baptist
prepared the way for Him and Jesus would
prepare a place for us in Heaven John
14 v1-3.
Being prepared for the inevitable is
good advice - are we prepared for the
life to come?

Brilliant news for all Cavalli friends and

Last month we showed you a picture of a

kept in livery whilst his owner was away.
Eventually photos of her horse stopped
coming and she began to worry so she
flew over to see for herself - and what she
saw brought tears to her eyes. She asked

Veronica to help her stable him where he

would be taken care of. He is terrified of
horse transport vehicles, so Veronica and
volunteer, Jacqui, had to walk him over
20km to his present stable where hes now
happy and well fed.

Samson,
ex-Show

was
immaculate in his aspect, but physically
and mentally he was a wreck. He could
hardly put one foot in front of the other
and he was dosed up with painkillers and
anti-inflammatories.
Now hes not so
clean and his coat is a bit ragged, but the
expression on his face is one of peace and
happiness. Hes off the drugs, has a social
life, has made friends and enjoys regular
exercise. Emily rode him for the first time
and he was just raring to go and he loves
a good hack.
Weve got the house full of volunteers,
starting to help prepare the move up to

December also saw The Leos pushing
forward with their Wheels for Kiko
fundraising. We cannot thank our local

support as we are now over half way
towards our given target of 2,000.
For those who still wish to make a donation,

A big thank you to Huey of Locksmith

Murcia. A friend of mine had a family
staying in their villa and over the
Christmas weekend and the handle broke
on one of the external doors putting it
out of use. As the owners were in the
UK, they asked me to contact Huey and
true to his word he was there to suit the
occupants, first thing Monday morning,
carrying out the job professionally and
efficiently. M
Thank you to Lisa Yoga. After thinking
Id given myself a hernia whilst practicing
exercises at home Id struggled to

problem at my next weekly visit to the

to incorporate postures to help and
almost instantly the pain disappeared.
Within 24 hours I was back to being
able to return to full on cardio workouts.

and Sunday mornings, volunteers arrive
and on approaching the kennels you
can almost feel the excitement in the
air from the dogs; all looking forward to
loving company, treats, cuddles and of
course a jaunt in the countryside. They
hear the cars arriving and from the
noise they make must instantly know
its walkie time. Its the opposite when
were all leaving theyre completely
worn out and snoozing. If I dont go
on Sundays Im really not sure who is

you want to feel loved, see some lovely
countryside and give yourself some
exercise, why not join us? You really
dont know what youre missing! M

Having had an intermittent car problem

for a few years and the root of the
problem remaining undiagnosed (even
Peugeot said there was no fault!), the
car decided to finally die on me, so
off it went on the grua to David at
Decklid Autos. After a week of lengthy
investigation and updates, we got the
call to say it was ready. My heart was
racing, not knowing what to expect
with the bill, but I have to say I was
pleasantly surprised and cant wait to
get back on the road with my little zippy
runaround rather than poodling around
in my partners car which resembles a
tank! Thanks David and team. M

Happy New Year!

We have got
a lovely boy
who
needs
rehoming.
He
just
turned
up
outside my
gate. Dont
know where
he
came
from, but is
well trained
and very well
behaved.
We
have
named him Jackson. He is jet black and
approximately 4 years old. He is castrated
and all his blood tests are negative.
However, he doesnt have a microchip. It
is a legal requirement for a dog to have
a microchip and makes me sad to think
that a family somewhere may have lost
their pet who obviously has had love and

A n o t h e r
lovely
boy
who is up for
rehoming is
Dougi who
is an exsheepdog;
very playful
and
loyal.
He
walks
off the lead
and
stays
by your side
too. He has
the
most
delicious
smile and is
sort of white
and shaggy!!
He is due to
be castrated very soon and would make an
ideal family pet.
I was driving along the road when a little
chap was running, not really sure where he
was going. I stopped to see if I could catch
him, which I did, took him home, scanned
him for a microchip and YES he had one.
This poor boy was reported missing on
7th January and was reunited with his
owner within 1 hour. Love a happy ending!
Microchipping is so important!
In October we rescued 2 ponies, a mummy
and baby, in conjunction with the Police.
They were starving to death and the baby
had been attacked by dogs and had the most
horrendous wounds that were infected.
The baby was so severely malnourished
and small that the vet couldnt believe he
was actually 2 years old. Now, 3 months
later, we have 2 absolute stunners! They
are all healed, furry and happy, having had
a taste of the good life. Sadly I cant keep
them due to lack of space, so they are up
for adoption. Take a look at our Facebook
page for before and after photos. If you
think you could help any of our animals

their words, were truly crucified men both
in their actions and in their works. They
sought after shame and contempt, out of
love for Christ, rather than the honours of
the world, the respect and praise of men.
They rejoiced to be despised and were
grieved when honoured. Thus they went
about the world as pilgrims and strangers,
carrying nothing with them but Christ
crucified; and because they were of the
true Vine, which is Christ, they produced
great and good fruits in many souls which
they gained to God.
It happened that, in the beginning of the
Order, St Francis sent Brother Bernard to
Bologna, there to accomplish many good
works, according to the grace which God
had given him.

4 rabbits are on their way to us from

the Pererra - cant resist bunnies! Low
maintenance, cheap to keep and an ideal
first pet. They will be up for adoption
before too long but not before they have
had a taste of the very special AAR care.
As usual I will be on Camposol B car park
every Monday 11.30am-1.30pm to receive
donations or you can drop them into one of
our shops in Roldan or Mazarrn 10.30am1.30pm.

If something isnt broken dont fix

it.
We do not like change; we want things
to stay the same, or do we? When it
comes to the house we all like a vacuum
cleaner instead of a brush. Before 1908 we
couldnt, since James Spangler only just
invented it! Had it not been for the sales
promotion of Mr Hoover, it might never had
made it to the commercial market place.
Before 1880 we would not have got stuck
behind a caravan and imagine before
1892 there was no such thing as a tractor!
Imagine how fast we could travel then,
except most of us were only able to walk,
as cars were a rarity; the first massproduced car the Model T Ford not being
produced until 1908.
When it comes to church, most of us are
even more certain that we do not want
change; things are all right as they are.
Well, if we do not want change - the average
sermon in the 17th century was at least an
hour and the congregations usually stood
and if we go back even further, services

What we really mean is we like what we
like and do not like anything else, but
think back to the Golden Age when Sunday
school was a must, two or three services
a day were the norm and nothing else
happened on a Sunday ever. As a youth I
recall serving at a minimum of two services
a morning every Sunday, so really we do
not usually mean We do not like change
that has taken place. We are concerned
about where change might lead us, or
what might happen to the bits we like now.
First I have to ask a question For whom
does Church exist? Certainly not for those
of us who are members!! The church is
the body of Christ on earth here to do the
work of Jesus which as He said Himself Is
to preach good news and recover of sight
to the blind. We exist for those who are
not yet members. Therefore our question
should be What must we do to reach the
others who do not come? Once we have
the answer to that question the next stage
is simple - do it!!

Before we next complain about change,

ask these questions; Is it having an

not, perhaps we should try something else,

February 2016 Greetings From The

Middle Of Winter
Now that February has come, the end
of the cold weather should be in sight.
Dragontours has some great suggestions,
either for a short break now or plan for
a special something in the summer or
autumn.

Costa Cruise has a great offer at the

moment, booking a Mediterranean or
Northern European cruise (Fiords or the
Baltic, visiting Saint Petersburg, for an
overnight stop!). If you book a premium
cabin before the end of February, you
will be given a free All-Inclusive drinks
package, worth more than 200 per
person. The dates vary between March and
September.
Pullmantur Cruises have also returned to
their policy of having all-inclusive drinks
packages included in all their cruises.
Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises
also have some wonderful itineraries,
from Barcelona or from Rome and special
discounts available when booking before
the end of February. There are some very

scootin, foot tapping, time. He has a

rich baritone country voice giving us not
only traditional well known songs, but also
countrified
versions
of
Valerie
and Speedy
Gonzales. At
least a dozen

have

back again.
This is being
arranged
for
our
next night,
which is in
Marianos
on
Friday
5th February.

We also have our 2nd new name this year,

Coles Country.

interesting round-the-Med, and Northern

European itineraries available, but hurry,
the best dates go quickly!

Our day trip programme:

The Aguilas Carnival on February 7th just 26 with a reserved seat for the show.
Las Fallas in Valencia on March 18th 25
Murcia Spring Festival on March 29th 15
The Zacatin Market on April 3rd - 18
The incredible Wine Horse Festival of
Caravaca on May 2nd - 19
Boat Trip to Tabarca Island on June 8th
- 32
Starting on June 29th, our Wednesday trips
to the fun-filled Benidorm market - only
19 (16 under 15yrs).
We can also organize tickets and coach
transfer, to the Easter processions of Lorca,
deemed some of the most spectacular in
Spain. This year on Thursday March 24th
and 25th, with a coach to Lorca on Good
Friday (25th) for just 15.

After the Christmas excesses, why not

book yourself a couple of nights in a Spa
hotel, complete with massages, relaxing
treatments, and some well-deserved
pampering? There are some lovely Spas
around, not only Archena and Fortuna, but
also some wonderful hotels on the coast,
near San Javier airport and further afield.

The evening will start at our normal time of

7.45pm. Entry is only 4.
If you have ever thought of coming along
to one of our nights, now is the time. It
just keeps getting better and better!
Dont forget Ann and Roys FREE line dance
class in the Camposol Cultural Centre each
Wednesday evening, starting at 7pm.
Even if you think you have 2 left feet, no
problem. You will be made welcome.
PS - Can anyone offer quick German
lessons? At least 20 Germans were at
our night in January!

SAMM Launch New Support Boat

Wednesday January 13th was an exciting
day for SAMM members as, immediately
after the AGM, the outgoing and incoming
Commodores, watched by a large group of
SAMM members, jointly launched the new
SAMM support boat, a Whaly 435R, using
a bottle of finest cava to anoint the hull.

their sailing and racing skill.

This year the proud recipient was Bob
Miles who was given the award, a glass
yacht trophy, to acknowledge his tireless
work over the last five years as the Chief
Maintenance and Training Manager for the
SAMM support boat.
Bob is a retired GPO engineer and RYA
qualified power and safety boat instructor.
However he has not retired from helping
SAMM as he will continue to be responsible
for the maintenance of the new Whaly
support boat which was launched on
January 13th and train suitably qualified

The Whaly, a roto-moulded polyethylene

Rib design, was identified as being ideal
for the various uses the support boat has
to cover. This Dutch-made vessel is used
extensively by many organisations around
the world for patrol and rescue purposes.
There is one in Mazarrn harbour and
another in San Pedro de Pinitar - both used
by the local authorities.

The Whaly was ordered from a dealer

in Cabo de Palos in November and was
delivered mid-December. Since then a
small group of SAMM members, led by
Bob Miles, fitted out the boat with the
engine, the controls and other equipment
necessary. A new engine will be purchased
as soon as funds allow and then the vessel
should give many years of reliable and
trouble free service.

Thursday December 10th was the day

for Fuente Old Guard to make their
annual visit to La Serena golf resort and
22 members arrived looking forward to a
pleasant days golf in the sunshine. Alas
this was not to be, for as the members
gathered on the first tee, the clouds rolled
in and the rain came down in a steady
downpour. With the prospect of a thorough
soaking the game was abandoned and
another date in January was fixed and we
retired to the bar to be joined by another
like-minded society who were equally as
wet.

Guard as it is now ten years since the

society was first formed and several
sponsored events are to be arranged to
commemorate that milestone in FOGGS
history. There will also be new society
shirts issued to mark the occasion and
several sponsors have been found to help
make 2016 a year to be remembered.
Should anyone wish to join Fuente Old
Guard or just play as a guest, please
contact us by email at
info@fuenteoldguardgolfsociety.com

2016 will be a big year for Fuente Old

our round he had a lump on his back the size

of Quasimodos having carried me for a full 18
holes! Thanks Gerry.
After the golf there was a very welcome
snack prepared by The Club House and the
first of two brief presentations. The second
presentation was held at the Black Bull the
following evening where we were again
treated to another meal and we golfers
wonder why we were putting on a few pounds
before Christmas even got underway!
And so to the Competition Results:
Let me start with the Nearest The Pin winners
and I have to say there was some sparkling
golf played elsewhere in the course.
Hole 5 winner was John Tromans at 4m from
the pin. 2nd was Alan Tipper.
Hole 13 winner was Keith Collins at just 1m
80cm from the pin pushing Mick Drummond
into 2nd place.
Hole 11 winner was Don Mallett at a
brilliant 80cm from the pin and forcing Mick
Drummond into 2nd place.
Hole 3 winner was Gerry McRobert at a
quite remarkable 40cm from the pin, again
squeezing the unfortunate Mick Drummond
into 2nd place!!!

As for the overall competition result it will

probably come as no surprise that Razor Ron
Johnstons team prevailed driving a luckless
Mick Drummond and his team into a valiant
2nd place. Regardless of the result and the
trials and tribulations of the day, a great time
was had by all!

The competition was a full handicap

Stableford, with all points scoring so, on a
fine December morning from the first and 10th
tees, battle commenced.
Under normal circumstances modesty forbids
the author of these reports commenting
upon his own golf, but as it was Christmas,
Im going to make an exception. Over many
years I have become quite an accomplished
golfer; never quite making single figures,
but getting very close on occasions. I can
honestly say, without fear of contradiction,
that this round of golf was close to the worst
I have played since taking up the game. I
would have done better had I played with
sticks of rhubarb. I certainly wouldnt have
lost so many balls! One of my opponents
on the day quickly spotted the problem and
informed me that my clubs looked slightly too
long and if I cut just a few inches off them
all, they would fit comfortably into the bin!!
I have to say a few words about my playing
partner on the day; the massively unlucky
Gerry McRobert. By the time wed completed

Christmas Bash
In an attempt to get into the Christmas spirit,
the Los Amigos Golf Society (LAGS) held
their Christmas competition at Camposol
Golf Course......well it would be far easier
to get home for those who indulged a little
too readily in the Christmas spirit! Complete
with a Secret Santa gift exchange, funny
hats and ridiculous jumpers (although they
werent meant to be!) the society was split
into two teams; one representing the society
secretary Razor Ron Johnston and the other
representing the Captain. Unfortunately the
Society Captain was travelling, so the dubious
honour fell to Vice Captain, mighty Mick
Drummond.

Mazarrn FCs excellent results continued

into mid-January with nine wins, three
draws and just one defeat in their last
thirteen games. At this stage they were in
4th position in the league; just one point
behind the second automatic promotion
place and five points clear of the play-off
cut-off positions.

A 2-1 away win at CD Juvenia was earned

without five regular players, three of
whom, including leading scorer Jose, were
suspended and two injured and, although
the game was hard fought, it showed the
strength in depth of the squad that the
coach Victor has assembled.

young goalkeeper Antonio continues to

impress and made an important penalty
save in a goalless draw against a strong La
Hoya Lorca team. The La Hoya game at the
beginning of January saw the biggest crowd
of the season at the Estadio Municipal and
support at away games continues to grow,
reflecting the much improved performances
by the team.
Mazarrn FCs home games are normally
played on Sundays with varying kick off
times. Los Amigos de Mazarrn FC
organise a supporters coach to most away
games, something unique in this area where
away support is almost non-existent. Coach
tickets for away games are 8 for members
and 10 for non-members. Full details of all
games are normally not announced until the
Wednesday before the weekend on which
the game is to be played and advertised in
the local media, on www.mazarronfc.es,
on Los Amigos de Mazarrn FC Facebook
page, and on posters at various points
throughout Camposol and Mazarron.
If you have not been to a game before why
not pop along to the Estadio Municipal in
Mazarron for one of the home games.
Admission is only 4 with juveniles free and
you can call into the Supporters Lounge for
a hot drink or beer before the game and
at half time. Hot pies and pasties are also
available in the lounge at half time if preordered at the Los Amigos meetings.

in each race. Martin was invited to a gala

lunch in Murcia to receive his trophy
with all the other winners of the various
categories. This is the first time this
has been won by an English National!

The 2016 season has already started

for Martin and hes currently racing in
the Alicante Region Interclub Series on
Saturdays for 7 weeks and in the Murcia
Interclub Series on Sundays also for 7
weeks. This means that Martin has a fullon weekend racing programme until the
end of February.

Christmas Dinner Dance

The
Camposol
Golf
Association
Christmas Dinner Dance on 18th
December once again proved to be a great
success. 115 attended the function and
enjoyed the excellent food, drinks and
entertainment. The service as usual was
also impeccable and the Committee has

decided to book the same venue for our

2016 Christmas Dinner Dance.
The
Christmas
Club
de
Golf
Competitions
The first of these took place on Wednesday
9th December and the second on Thursday
17th December with prizes for both events
being presented after the Competition on
17th December. Unfortunately the results
have not come in yet. We all look forward to
these annual events and a good time was
had by all. Due to the generosity of the
sponsors there were many prizes to give
out; the 9ths Competition was sponsored
by Avalon and the 17th by Alley Palais. All
the time the prizes were being presented
we had mulled wine, sandwiches and
sausage rolls all of which were generously
supplied by The Club House.

Mens Turkey Trot Competition

This competition took place on Wednesday
23rd December. The Winner with 37 points
was Mark Henwood. 2nd was Colin Reed
with 35 and Clive Porter 3rd with 33 points,
all of whom received meat vouchers. There
were Nearest The Pin prizes on all par 3s.
The winners were Harry Peers on the 3rd
hole, Pete Stevenson on the 11th and Colin
Reed on the 13th. There was no winner for
the 5th hole. After the competition they
had an excellent two course carvery in The
Club House.
Ladies Turkey Trot Competition
The ladies held their competition on 12th
January (therefore no Turkey!) The ladies
winners were Julie White 1st with 36 points,
Pam Andrew had the same points but lost
out on count back and Olly Hill was 3rd with
33 points. After the game they adjourned
to Cats Bar for a 3 course roast meal.

Annual General Meeting

This meeting will take place on Wednesday
3rd February at the Golf Club commencing
at 3pm. The Committee are prepared to
stand again, but would much prefer it if
someone else would come forward and
perhaps breathe some new blood into the
Camposol Golf Association Committee.
Forthcoming Events
The CGA are already planning events for
2016 and are hoping to arrange a Charity
Quiz Night in February, a Golfing Away
Day in early April and we are looking at
various venues to hold our Summer Ball
in June.
The Costa Clida Ladies League
Unfortunately one of our teams dropped
out of the League and it was not thought
possible to have a league with only 3
teams in it, therefore the Ladies League
has folded. We have agreed we will have
friendly competition team games with
the 3 different golf course ladies mixed
in together. The first of these games will
be scheduled for the New Year. If you are
group of Lady Golfers who would like to be
part of our group you are very welcome
to join us and then we could resurrect the
League, as we are we will still be playing
at reciprocal golf courses at reduced green
fees. If you are interested in joining us, or
would like more information please contact

Buoyant Start To 2016!

As predicted at the end of last year, the
first 6 weeks of 2016 have been hectic
to say the least! Viewings and sales have
surpassed previous years so far and we
have clients booked in right up until May.

Most Popular Property Locations

Throughout the year there is a very clear
pattern regarding the most sought-after
areas for property. During the summer
months, coastal locations are extremely
desirable, with Los Alcazares and Puerto

de Mazarrn the two hotspots, with

urbanisations like El Alamillo in Puerto
de Mazarrn and Los Narejos on the
Mar Menor topping the list. Outside the
Summer season, country locations around
Fuente Alamo, Cartagena and Totana are
in very high demand. Why not contact us
for a more detailed appraisal and guidance
about when and how to market your
property?

This time last year the currency exchange

rate had just cleared 1.20 to the pound
and as I write now, it is a little over
9% higher at 1.32 to one pound. This
translates into buyers finding property
almost 10% cheaper compared to the
same period last year and with most of the
official statistics organisations predicting a
slight increase in property values between
1% & 3% higher over the next 12 months,
buyers have never had so much incentive
to find their perfect Spanish property since
2007.

As previously mentioned, this is the best

time of year to put your property on the
market. The build-up to Easter peak sales
has now become a regular part of the sales
cycle. Since last year our client database
has grown rapidly with buyers who have
been out with us on several trips, but they
have been unable to find just what they
are looking for. A fresh property listing
always attracts immediate interest with
buyers already booked to come out and
we can guarantee genuine viewings will be
achieved within weeks of coming onto the
market.

Traffic Fines
On the main page of their website,
http://www.dgt.es/es/, information is
now available in English which tells you
what to do in the event of receiving a
traffic violation ticket. Once you click on
the link in English, the sections are then
presented in five topics, detailing what to
do if you have received a traffic violation
ticket, how to identify the offending driver
if it was not the vehicle owner and details
of how to appeal against and pay a fine,
as well as their contact details. Each one
of the topics then explains, in detail, the
procedures to follow. You can read the
information at any time, whether you
have received a fine or not, so it is worth
visiting the site to become accustomed
with the procedures in the event of
receiving a fine in the future.

Sufferers of sleep apnoea will no longer

be automatically banned from driving, so
long as the medical condition is certifiably
under control by a medical professional.
In the event of death from a road
traffic incident, the costs associated
with medical examinations and autopsies
will be covered by the government, which
is hoped to provide better investigate
resources in the event of a major incident.

The eBook, The New Rules of the Road

is available from the website, n332.es/
ebook.

New Electronic ITV Certificates

New vehicles registered in Spain will have
a new, electronic version of the technical
characteristics document, rather than the
traditional paper or card version. This will
automatically be issued with the vehicle
for all newly registered cars, vans and
trucks.
Changes to Spanish Traffic Laws
January 2016
Whilst renewing many of the older traffic
laws in order to adapt to the modern
world, Spain is also undergoing changes
to legislation to meet the requirements
of the European Union and help create
a standardised road network across the
continent. These changes are constantly
being developed and adapted and,
although many of them are aimed at
creating safer roads, some of them are
questionable, although are to become
mandatory in the New Year along with
others.
One of the changes that is causing
most concern is that of pillion
passengers on mopeds. Moped riders
who qualify for the AM licence for mopeds
are now permitted to carry passengers,
so long as the vehicle is adapted thereof.
This new rule is regardless of the age of
the rider. Prior to this change, in Spain
children under 18 were not permitted to
carry passengers.
The BTP category will be removed
from licences and is absorbed within
other categories, so there is no longer
a special requirement for drivers of
emergency vehicles, taxis or school bus,
other than the standard requirements.
So called Mega-Trucks, up to 60
tonnes in weight and 25.25 metres in
length, are now permitted on the roads
of Spain. This authorises trucks with more
than six axles to travel through the road
network, although special authority must
be obtained so that the impact on road
safety can be assessed.

Once checked and validated, the DGT

will store the information in an electronic
register, the Registro de Vehculos
Prematriculados, which in turn issues the
vehicle identification number, the Nmero
de Identificacin del Vehculo (NIVE),
which then becomes the unique identifier
for that vehicle.
The DGT will then assign the registration
number of the vehicle and issue the
Tarjeta de Inspeccin Tcnica, or technical
inspection card, in electronic form only,
which can be accessed on-line.
As of May 11, 2016, this type of electronic
card will also be issued for mopeds,
motorcycles, tricycles and quads.
If your vehicle has the paper version,
you must carry this document with
you in the vehicle.
Road Junctions
A road junction is a location where multiple
roads intersect, allowing vehicular traffic
to change from one road to another.
Priority
The notion of priority refers to the
passage of vehicles and which vehicles are
allowed to move through junctions and
roadways first. We refer to priority in a
similar manner to how the phrase right
of way was once used, but in a time of
shared space and multiple different uses
for roads and vehicles, to which nobody
has a right to be on the roads over any
other vehicle, it is acknowledged that
drivers do have to give way to other
road users and so we not only replace the
terminology but also the notion of how

traffic flows.
The driver of a vehicle that has to give
way to another must not initiate or
continue a manoeuvre across a junction
in the event of that manoeuvre causing
a hazard by forcing the other vehicle to
deviate from its speed, course or direction.
Unmarked Crossings
When no signs, signals or road markings
indicating priority are present at a
junction, drivers must give way to
approaching vehicles from their right,
irrespective of the type of vehicle that
it is, including cycles, horse and carts,
agricultural vehicles, cars, buses and
trucks, except in the following cases:
In the event of movement from an unpaved
road to a paved road, the vehicles on the
paved road have priority.
Vehicles running on rails such as trams
have priority over all other road users.
At
roundabouts,
vehicles
on
the
roundabout have priority over those
wishing to enter it.
Vehicles travelling on a motorway have
priority over those seeking to access the
highway.
Signalled Junctions
Drivers of vehicles approaching a
junction controlled by an officer of official
controlling traffic must stop their vehicles
when ordered. The instructions of officials
controlling junctions overrule the signs.
The driver of a vehicle approaching a
junction controlled by traffic lights must
stop their vehicle in order to give way
when indicated by a red of flashing yellow
light.
Road signs P-1, which are formed of
pictograms enclosed in a red triangle
warn of a junction ahead, indicate the
priority through that junction by means of
the larger, bolder arrowed line.
Road sign P-2, which is formed of an
x type cross in a red triangle warns of
a junction where the general rule offers
priority to vehicles approaching from the
right.
At junctions where road markings indicate
the need to give way or to stop and give
way, drivers passing through that junction
on the major road in either direction have
priority through the junction.
Irrespective of the priority through a
junction, no vehicle is permitted to enter
any junction or pedestrian crossing unless
the exit from the junction or crossing is
clear. Some junctions are protected by
yellow boxes which dictate the same,
although the rule applies irrespective
of the presence of such a feature that
a junction must not be blocked by any
vehicle unless the exit from that junction
is clear and the only thing impeded the
egress is the flow of traffic crossing its
path.
Happy Driving!
