Pennywise
designs
and builds
stunning
websites
for small
businesses.

Having a website
for your business today,
is like having had a
yellow pages ad
yesterday.

Karma Halleran,
Web Manager at
Pennywise

websites@pennywiseads.com

Some benefits of a website

We Can Build it

Unlike print media, your website is easy to

change or update. You can advertise in full
colour, as often and as large as youd like.
In addition, the cost to change content on
a website is measured by the time it takes,
while printed material is measured by
time and space or materials.

Mobile Responsive

A website doesnt replace the need for

printed material. It supports and builds
upon your print message. Maybe your
display ad tells your clients you have the
best customer service in the Kootenays...
your website can detail the lengths that
you will go to for your client. Tease them in
print, give them more online. A well
designed site with targeted content,
solid SEO and regularly updated can supplement your print materials daily, weekly
or monthly.
With a website you can give your clients
many reasons to purchase your product or
service. A professional, customized website
will help strengthen your brand, and make
you stand out from the competition.
A website will drive more customers
to your physical location.
Advertise multiple ways on multiple days.

Save yourself weeks. Let us build you a professional looking

site, fast, efficiently and designed to your specifications and
satisfaction. Take advantage of our professional web team
and award winning designers. Put us to work for you.

Your customers can view and use your site on the go with
their smart phones or tablets and your site will be picked
up by the Google crawlers.

Includes SEO and Quarterly Reviews

We include Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in the development of your site so you dont have to pay another
professional to do this for you. We will load a Stat Plugin
for access to the information on how your website is being
used. Your searchability will be regularly monitored and
well converse quarterly with you on all our findings.

Dependable Support

You receive up to 2 hours of training with your new Custom Manual, focusing specifically on the type of editing or
administration you would like to handle for yourself.
Have an issue that you cant fix? Dont get frustrated - whip
us off an email! Well help get it solved asap. Most glitches only take some experience and a few minutes to solve.
Depending on your service package, there may be a charge...
and it will be more then reasonable. If it looks like a big
issue, well discuss it with you first. Our focus is
excellent service and working websites.

After-Launch Care

Variable Service Packages - Or None. We offer a range of

service packages for you to consider... from do-it-all-yourself, do-some-yourself, to do-none-yourself. Choose what
suits you best based on your time or your knowledge or
interest in WordPress. Sign up for the Lite, Mid or Full Service package or pay by the hour, as you need our services.
We will apply all version and plugin updates, monitor SEO
and Stats, meet and advise quarterly and pay the monthly
hosting in the Lite Service Package.

Online Privacy For Families

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada has

launched House Rules - a new interactive tool for families
aimed at helping parents manage the online risks facing
their children.
We want families to consider their online behaviour and
how personal information may be collected, used and disclosed so that children will learn to think twice before sharing
any sensitive details, Commissioner Daniel Therrien says.
Having a privacy plan setting out the family dos and
donts can help everyone work together to protect privacy.
Parents are invited to use the tool to assess how their children interact online through games, mobile applications
and social networking sites as a means of starting a dialogue on safe and responsible surfing. The tool offers simple
tips parents and children can customize into their very own
house rules that can be printed off and posted in a common
area as a reminder of how to protect privacy online.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada is
also unveiling a new tip sheet for individuals to help all
Canadians become more familiar with the basics of privacy protection.
House Rules can be accessed at https://www.priv.gc.ca/

School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake)

Kootenay Conservation Program

Kootenay Lake Local Conservation Fund (KLLCF)

Request for Proposals
The Kootenay Conservation Program (KCP) and Regional District of Central
Kootenay (RDCK) are seeking proposals for projects that will benefit
conservation in the rural areas around Kootenay Lake, specifically electoral
areas A, D, and E within the RDCK.
The purpose of the Fund is to provide local financial support for important
projects that will contribute to the conservation of our valuable natural
areas. Kootenay Lake Local Conservation Fund (KLLCF) funding is available
for conservation projects that result in the reduction to a known threat to
biodiversity. The themes for the Fund are water conservation, wildlife and
habitat conservation, and open space conservation.
Projects that are technically sound and effective, and provide value for
money through partnerships with other funders will be given priority.
Proponents must be a registered not-for-profit organization, First Nations
band, or local government. Unqualified groups or organizations may
partner with a qualified organization. A Technical Review Committee will
review project proposals and make recommendations to the RDCK for final
funding approval.
To apply for funding, go to www.kootenayconservation.ca and click on
the Kootenay Lake Local Conservation Fund tab. Review the Terms of
Reference paying particular attention to Section 8 Fund Design and then
apply using the application form provided.
The closing date for project submissions is 4:30 pm February 15, 2016.
Project proposals must be delivered by email to info@kootenayconservation.ca.

These two little guys are looking apprehensive after

being picked up as strays but its all good now. They
have been neutered and vaccinated, and are loving

but warm up fast and love pets and attention. Frosty
and Jack can be adopted together or separately.

Another year has

gone and a new year
has arrived bringing
snow and slippery
roads.
The Nelson IRSU
and WKTS whose
patrol area covers a vast roadway of
the Kootenays and Boundary region
worked hard all year to make the roads
safe for everyone. We lost four people
on fatal collisions this year, a decrease
of 60% since 2014, however, four is still
too many. Our condolences go to the
families and friends.
In 2015, we saw a change in our
motoring public which is a concern
to us. Our impaired driving charges
increased by 35% and our one, three and
seven day alcohol suspensions increased
by 100%. Our drug impaired increased
by 10%. This is an alarming increase. We
cannot stress enough the devastation an
impaired charge or a Immediate Roadside Prohibition can have on the driver,
family or victims of a crash.
Our members will be increasing our
enforcement in hopes of getting the
message across.

from pg 26

Do not drink alcohol or use illicit drugs and drive your car.
We saw a 25% increase in drug seizures and a 100%
increase in drug trafficking charges, all related to people
traveling our roads with illegal drugs. Seatbelt and cell
phone decreased. We know cell phone usage or distracted
driving is still one of our main causes of crashes and be
aware increased enforcement in 2016 will continue.
Our excessive speeds, 40 kilometres over the posted
speed limit increased dramatically by 50%. We cannot
stress enough to slow down and drive to the road conditions, not the posted speed limit.
Our patrols mandate is to make the Kootenay Boundary roads the safest in BC and we will continue to strive to
do this through enforcement and education. We need the
public as well to understand that their adverse actions on
the roads can and will affect themselves and others.
We wish everyone a great 2016 and please stay safe.

Edward Riemer

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing

of Edward Riemer on December 23, 2015.
Ed was born in Poland on February 9, 1927 and immigrated to Canada when he was 4 years
old. He spent his growing up years in the Edmonton area and eventually moved to beautiful
BC, where he worked and lived in Prince George before moving to the Fruitvale/Salmo area.
It was in 1985 in Salmo where our familys lives and Eds became intertwined. Ed met
Joyce Ralph, the mother of Gloria, Bonnie and Cathy, and became a cherished and much
loved husband, stepfather and Grampa to these women and their families. Together,
he and Joyce shared their love and commitment to each other and to our families.
They lived together on a 20 acre hobby farm in Salmo, and enjoyed many years of
raising cattle, milking cows and haying. Ed was particularly good with all the farm
equipment and he gladly shared this knowledge with Mo.
In the end Ed was Joyces caretaker after her stroke and up until her death in 2007.
Ed left Salmo after Joyces death, but he was still such an important part of our
families, he was involved in all important events such as weddings, birthdays,
Christmases and family reunions. He was loved by all of Joyces family and all of
Joyces family will miss him immensely. Goodbye to Ed; we hope you are dancing
in Heaven with Joyce.

Intelligent Communities Workshop

Nelsons growing technology sector has inspired community leaders to continue their work towards obtaining
Intelligent Community status for the city.
The Nelson and Area Economic Development Partnership (NAEDP) will host a workshop on the topic, with the
goal of creating several working groups that will take on
projects to help Nelsons digital economy grow.
Were already on our way to becoming an Intelligent
Community, said Andrea Wilkey, Community Futures
Central Kootenay executive director and NAEDP member. We have the beginning of broadband infrastructure and a knowledge workforce, which wed like to see
expand. Often, knowledge workers have the ability to do
their work from anywhere. If we want them to come to
Nelson we need something to make us stand out as a tech
friendly community.
One way to make Nelson stand out, according to Wilkey,
is for the city to join the 134 communities around the world
that have earned the designation of Intelligent Communities. To do this, Nelson needs to show it is competitive and
prospering in the digital economy.
Nelson Mayor Deb Kozak says you dont need to be tech
savvy to get behind the Intelligent Communities movement. One of the pillars for Intelligent Communities is
digital equality meaning that all members of the community have access to technology and know how to use
it, Kozak explained. For folks who want to improve their
digital literacy, there will be more opportunities to do so
as we move towards becoming an Intelligent Community.
The six pillars that an Intelligent Community strives for
are: Broadband Infrastructure, Knowledge Workforce,
Innovation, Digital Equality, Sustainability and Advocacy.
The coming workshop will identify projects that will help
Nelson advance in each of these key areas.
Were inviting thinkers and doers to help us define our
next steps and put those ideas into action, Wilkey said.
Were especially looking for people who are willing to
commit some time towards moving projects forward.
The workshop will be held February 23, 4 - 8:30 pm at
the Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce, 91 Baker
Street. The first hour (4 - 5 pm) is an optional presentation for those who need a refresher on what an Intelligent
Community is. This will lead into the main workshop,
which will follow a Strategic Doing methodology. Participants will be divided into working groups to pool their
skills, networks and other assets together and identify
ways to position Nelson to be successful in the digital
economy.
Registration is required and space is limited. Visit www.
intelligentnelson.com to reserve a seat.

Selkirk College instructor Gary Thompson (right) will be

leading the learning in the Professional Cook 3 Program
starting on February 15.

Red Seal Training For

Experienced Cooks

The well established Professional Cook Training program has been a cornerstone of Selkirk Colleges hospitality training for decades. Students interested in culinary
careers have been taking the Professional Cook 1 and Professional Cook 2 levels that are based out of Mary Hall on

the Tenth Street Campus, Nelson which has equipped them

with the knowledge and skills for gainful employment.
The BC Industry Training Authority (ITA) has approved
Selkirk College to add a special cohort of Professional
Cook 3 training that will enable those working in the
industry and those with accumulated hours to put the finishing touches on their national Red Seal standard, starting February 15. The program is six weeks in length and
meets all the requirements of the national Red Seal standard for cooks.
Selkirk College has never offered this level before,
says Bob Falle, chair of the School of Hospitality, Tourism & Cosmetology. We have been faced with increasing demand from those working in the industry and those
looking for this level of training. Having a Red Seal will
open up additional doors for those who want to validate
their skills and knowledge in the cooking profession.
We regularly receive calls from employers searching for
trained cooks. This kind of training will be invaluable for
those individuals who want to capitalize on a career that is
full of endless opportunity.
To find out more information and to register for the Professional Cook 3 program go to selkirk.ca/program/cook.
You can also call 250-505-1370 for more information.
