Club.Withacapacityof60,272,theEmiratesisthe
thirdlargestfootballstadiuminEnglandafterWembley
andOldTrafford.
In1997,Arsenalexploredthepossibilityofrelocatingto
anewstadium,havingbeendeniedplanningpermission
byIslingtonCounciltoexpanditshomegroundof
Highbury.Afterconsideringvariousoptions(including
purchasingWembleyStadium),theclubboughtan
industrialandwastedisposalestateinAshburtonGrove
in2000.Ayearlatertheywonthecouncil'sapprovalto
buildastadiumonthesitemanagerArsneWenger
describedthisasthe"biggestdecisioninArsenal's
history"sincetheboardappointedHerbertChapman.[3]
Relocationbeganin2002,butfinancialdifficulties
delayedworkuntilFebruary2004.EmiratesAirlinewas
laterannouncedasthemainsponsorforthestadium.
Workwascompletedin2006atacostof390million.
Thestadiumhasundergoneaprocessof
"Arsenalisation"since2009withtheaimofrestoring
Arsenal'sheritageandhistory.Thegroundhashosted
musicconcertsandinternationalfixturesfeaturing
Brazil.

Origin
InresponsetotheHillsboroughdisasterofApril1989,aninquiryledby
LordTaylorofGosforthwaslaunchedintocrowdsafetyatsports
grounds.[4]FinalisedinJanuary1990,theTaylorReportrecommendedthe
capacityrestrictionofgroundsby15%withallterracesreplacedby
seating.[5]Manyfootballclubs,facedwiththerequirementofmakingtheir
groundsallseaterbythestartofthe199495season,hadsoughtwaysof
raisingincomeforconvertingterracedareas.[6]Arsenalattheendofthe
199091seasonintroducedabondscheme,whichofferedsupportersthe
righttobuyaseasonticketatitsconvertedNorthBankstandof
Highbury.[6]Theboardfeltthiswastheonlyviableoptionafterconsidering
otherproposalstheydidnotwanttocompromiseontheirtraditions,nor
limitmanagerGeorgeGraham'sresources.[7]Atapriceofbetween1,000
to1,500,the150yearbondwascriticisedbysupporters,whoarguedit
potentiallyblockedtheparticipationofthoselesswellofffromsupporting
Arsenal.[8]AcampaigndirectedbytheIndependentArsenalSupporters'
Associationbroughtrelativesuccessasonlyathirdofallbondswere

consideredrelocatingto.
TheNorthBankwasthelastareaofHighburytoberefurbished.ItopenedinAugust1993atacostof20
million.[10]Thereworksignificantlyreducedthestadium'scapacity,from57,000atthebeginningofthe
decadetounder40,000.[11]Highticketpricestoservetheclub'sexistingdebtsandlowattendancefigures
forcedArsenaltoexplorethepossibilityofbuildingalargerstadiumin1997.Theclubwantedtoattractan

bycomparisonenjoyedariseingatereceiptsfrom43.9millionin1994to87.9millionin1997,because
ofOldTrafford'sexpansion.[13]
Arsenal'sinitialproposaltorebuildHighburywasmetwithdisapprovalfromlocalresidents,asitrequired
thedemolitionof25neighbouringhouses.[14]ItsoonbecameproblematiconcetheEastStandofthe
stadiumwasgrantedGradeIIlistinginJuly1997.[15]Aftermuchconsultation,theclubeventually
abandoneditsplan,decidingacapacityof48,000wasnotbigenough.[16]
InJanuary1998,ArsenalinvestigatedtheopportunityofrelocatingtoWembleyStadiumandmadean
officialbidtobuythegroundtwomonthslater.However,theFootballAssociationandtheEnglish
NationalStadiumTrustopposedArsenal'soffer,statingthatitwouldharmEngland'sbidforthe2006FIFA
WorldCup,thoughFIFAdeniedthis.[17][18]Bytheendofthe199798season,thebidwaswithdrawnand
WembleywaspurchasedbyTheFootballAssociation.[16]Thestadium,however,playedhosttoallof
Arsenal'sUEFAChampionsLeaguehometiesduringthe199899and19992000seasons.Althoughthe
clubfaredpoorlyinthecompetitioneliminatedtwicefromthegroupstagesinsuccessiveseasons
Arsenal'srecordhomeattendance(73,707againstRCLensinNovember1998)wassetandearnedupto1
millionforeachWembleymatchday,highlightingpotentialprofitability.[19]

Aboarddisplayingthe
acquisitionoftheAshburton
Grovesiteforthestadium
development.
ThroughthepersuasionofestateagentandclubpropertyadviserAntony
Spencer,Arsenalexaminedthefeasibilityofbuildinganewstadiumin
AshburtonGroveinNovember1999.[16]Theland,500yards(460m)from
Highbury,composedofarubbishprocessingplantandindustrialestate,
80%ownedbytheIslingtonCouncil,RailtrackandSainsbury's.[20]The
movethereforedependedontheclubbuyingouttheexistingoccupantsand
financingfortheirrelocation.Afterpassingthefirstsignificantmilestoneat
thecouncil'splanningcommittee,Arsenalsubmittedtheirplanning
applicationforanew60,000seaterstadiuminNovember2000.[16][21]This
includedaredevelopmentprojectatDraytonPark,convertingtheexisting
groundHighburyasflatsandbuildinganewwastestationinLough
Road.[16]Theschemealsoinvolvedtheclubcreating1,800newjobsforthe
communityand2,300newhomes.[22][23]Improvementstothreerailway
stations,HollowayRoad,DraytonParkandFinsburyPark,werepromised
inordertocopewiththematchdaycrowds.[23]
ThemovetoAshburtonGrovewasopposedbymembersoftheArsenalIndependentSupporters'
Association(AISA),whowereconcernedaboutenvironmentalissues.[21]TheIslingtonStadium
CommunitiesAllianceanallianceof16groupsrepresentinglocalresidentsandbusinesseswassetupin
January2000topromoteawarenessagainsttheredevelopment.[24]AlisonCarmichael,aspokeswomanfor
thegroupsaidofthemove:"ItmaylooklikeArsenalaredoinggreatthingsforthearea,butinitsdetailthe
planisawful.Weblamethecouncilthefootballclubjustwantstoexpandtomakemoremoney."[25]Seven
monthsaftertheplanningapplicationwassubmittedinJune2001,apollshowedthat75%ofrespondents

wereagainstthescheme,with2,133residentsobjectingand712insupport.[25]ByOctober2001,theclub
assertedthatapollofIslingtonresidentsfoundthat70%wereinfavour,[26]andreceivedthebackingfrom
MayorofLondon,KenLivingstone.[27]
Topushformorelocalsupport,theclubplantedtheslogan"LetArsenalsupportIslington"around
HighburyduringmatchesagainstAstonVillaandJuventusinDecember2001.[28][29]Italsofeaturedasa
backdropformanagerArsneWenger'spressconferenceintheleaduptoChristmas.[30]IslingtonCouncil
approvedArsenal'splanson10December2001,as34councillorsvotedinfavouroftheAshburtonGrove
developmentwithsevenagainstandoneabstention.[31]31votedforthetransferofawasterecyclingplant
inLoughRoadandeightagainst.[31]ThefinalvotewasratifiedbyKenLivingstoneandTransport
SecretaryStephenByers.[32]ArsenalwasgiventheallcleartostartworkinJuly2002afteraHighCourt
judgerejectedachallengebylocalresidentsandISCA.[33]Theclubsucceededinafurtherlegalchallenge
bysmallfirmsinJanuary2005astheHighCourtupheldadecisionbyDeputyPrimeMinisterJohn
Prescotttograntacompulsorypurchaseorderinsupportofthescheme.[34]
ThestadiumbecameamajorissueinthelocalelectionsinMay2006.TheMetropolitanPolicedemanded
thatsupporters'coachesbeparkedinthenearbySobelSportsCentreratherthanintheundergroundcar
park,andrestrictionsonaccessto14streetsbeimposedonmatchdays.Thehealthandsafetycertificate
wouldnotbeissuedunlessthestadiummeetssuchconditions,withoutwhichthestadiumcouldnotopen.
Theroadclosureswerepassedatacouncilmeeting,butkeptunderreview.[35]
Financeandnaming
FinancingfortheprojectproveddifficultasArsenalwasnotgrantedanypublicsubsidybythegovernment.
Theclubthereforesoughtotherwaystogenerateincome,namelybyadoptingapolicyofbuyingfootball
playersforlowtransferfeesandsellinghigh,aswellasagreeingsponsorshipdeals.Arsenalrecoupedover
50millionfromtransfersinvolvingNicolasAnelkatoRealMadridandMarcOvermars,inajointdeal
withEmmanuelPetittoBarcelona.[36]ThetransferofAnelkainparticularhelpedfundtheclub'snew
trainingground,inLondonColney,whichopenedinOctober1999.[37]
InSeptember2000,GranadaMediaGrouppurchasedafivepercentstakeinArsenalatapriceof47
million.[38]Aspartoftheacquisition,Granadabecamethepremiermediaagentforthefootballclub,
handlingadvertising,sponsorship,merchandising,publishingandlicensingagreements.[38]Thecompany
furthermoreinvested20millioninajointventure,AFCBroadband,toexploittheclub'sinternet
viewership.[39]ArsenalchairmanPeterHillWoodsaidofthedeal:"Thispartnershipwillassistusin
meetingArsenal'stwostrategicobjectives.First,tobuildaworldclassteamandanewstadiumwithan
increasedcapacitysothatmoreofourfanscanenjoywatchingtheteam.Secondly,todeveloptheArsenal
brandonaglobalbasisbyextendingourfanbasearoundtheworld."[40]ManagingDirectorKeithEdelman
addedthattheinvestmentwouldbeuseddirectlytofundforthenewstadium.[38]ThecollapseofITV
DigitalpartownedbyGranadainApril2002coincidedwithcompanybeingtiedintopay30million
oncearrangementsforthenewstadiumwerefinalised.[41][42]

Afterannouncingpretaxlossof22.3mforthefinancialyear200102,the
clubformulatedplanstoreducetheirwagebillsinordertocontinuewith
thestadiumwork.[43]InvestmentbankNMRothschildandSonswas
appointedtoexaminethefinancialsituationattheclubandadvisewhether
itwasfeasibleforArsenaltomoveonwithconstructionattheendofMarch
2003.[44]AlthoughArsenalsecureda260millionloanfromagroupof
banksledbytheRoyalBankofScotlandinApril2003,theclubsuspended
workonAshburtonGrovecitinginastatement,"Wehaveexperienceda
numberofdelaysinarrangementsforournewstadiumprojectinrecent
monthsacrossarangeofissues.Theimpactofthesedelaysisthatwewill
nowbeunabletodeliverastadiumopeningforthestartofthe200506
season."[41][45]Thecostofbuildingthestadium,forecastedat400million,
TheEmiratesStadiumsign
hadrisenbya100millionduringthatperiod.[46]Tocombatthefinancial
difficulties,Arsenalthroughoutthesummerof2003gavefansthe
opportunitytoregistertheirinterestinarelaunchedbondscheme.[47]The
clubplannedtoissue3,000bondsforbetween3,500and5,000eachforaseasonticketatHighbury,then
atAshburtonGrove.[41]Arsenalsupportersreactedwithsurprisetothereintroductionofthebondscheme
withAISAchairmanStevenPowelladding:"Wearedisappointedthattheclubhasnotconsultedsupporters
beforeannouncinganewbondscheme."[48]Thoughtheyneverstatedhowmanybondsweresold,Arsenal
didraiseseveralmillionpoundsthroughthescheme.[41]
SportswearproviderNikesignedacontractextensionwithArsenalinAugust2003toremainastheclub's
officialkitsupplier.[49]Thiswaspresentedasasolutiontothestadiumfinancinginadditiontopaying55
millionoversevenyears,Nikepaidaminimumof1millioneachyearasaroyaltyfee,dependenton
sales.[50]On23February2004,ArsenalHoldingsplctheclub'sparentcompanyannouncedthatfunding
forthestadiumwasnowsecuredwithconstructionworkbeingabletoresume.[51]Wengersaidofthe
announcement:"Ithasbeenabigtargetofminetoparticipateinpushingtheclubforwardandrelocatingto
anewstadiumisanecessityasitwillenableustobecomeofonethebiggestclubsintheworld."[52]
Interestonthe260milliondebtwassetatacommercialfixedrateovera14yearperiod.[52]Torefinance
thecost,theclubplannedtoconvertthemoneyintoa30yearbondfinancedbybanks.[53]Theproposed
bondissuewentaheadon13July2006.Arsenalissued210millionworthof13.5yearbondswitha
spreadof52basispointsovergovernmentbondsand50millionof7.1yearbondswithaspreadof22
basispointsoverLIBOR.Itwasthefirstpubliclymarketed,assetbackedbondissuebyaEuropeanfootball
club.[54]Theeffectiveinterestrateonthesebondsis5.14%and5.97%,respectively,andareduetobepaid
backovera25yearperiodthemovetobondshasreducedtheclub'sannualdebtservicecostto
approximately20millionayear.[55]InSeptember2010,ArsenalannouncedthattheHighburySquare
developmentoneofthemainsourcesofincometoreducethestadiumdebtwasnowdebtfreeand
makingrevenue.[56]
On5October2004,EmiratesAirlinesigneda15yearcontractwithArsenalestimatedat100million.[57]
Underthedeal,thegroupsecurednamingrightstothestadiumandshirtsponsorshipwhentheclub'sdeal
withO2expiredattheendofthe200506season.[57]Thestadiumnameisoftencolloquiallyshortened
from"EmiratesStadium"to"TheEmirates",althoughsomesupporterscontinuetousetheformername
"AshburtonGrove"oreven"TheGrove"forthenewstadium,especiallythosewhoobjecttotheconceptof

EuropeanmatchesthestadiumisnotofficiallyreferredtoasEmiratesStadium,asEmiratesarenotan
officialsponsoroftheChampionsLeaguecompetitionotherstadia,suchastheAllianzArenainMunich,
havefallenfoulofthisrulebefore.[59]UEFArefertothestadiumasArsenalStadium,whichwasthe
officialnameofthestadiumatHighbury.[60]
InNovember2012,ArsenalandEmiratesofficiallyannouncedanewdealworth150millionatthe
EmiratesStadium.ThepartnershipkeepsEmiratesastheofficialmatchandtrainingshirtsponsorfor
another5years.ThedealalsograntsEmiratestheAshburtonGrovestadiumnamingrightsuntil2028.The
dealspaymenttermswerebroughtforwardforpotentialearlierinvestmentthoughtheextentofthiswasnot
released.[61]
Constructionandopening
ActualconstructionofthestadiumbeganinFebruary2004.Arsenal
appointedSirRobertMcAlpineinJanuary2002tocarryout
buildingworkandthestadiumwasdesignedbyHOKSport(known
asPopuloussince2009),whowerethearchitectsforStadium
AustraliaandtheredevelopmentofAscotRacecourse.[62]
ConstructionconsultantsArcadisandengineeringfirmBuro
Happoldwerealsoinvolvedintheprocess.[63][64]
ThefirstphaseofdemolitionwascompletedinMarch2004andtwo
monthslaterstandpilingontheWest,EastandNorthstandshad
TheEmiratesStadiumunder
beenconcluded.[65]TwobridgesovertheNorthernCityrailwayline
constructioninMay2005
connectingthestadiumwithDraytonParkwerealsobuiltthese
werecompletedinAugust2004.[65]Thestadiumtoppedoutin
August2005andexternalglazing,powerandwatertankinstallationwascompletedbyDecember2005.[65]
Thefirstseatinthenewstadiumwasceremoniallyinstalledon13March2006byArsenalmidfielderAbou
Diaby.[66]LikeHighbury,DDGrassMasterwasselectedasthepitchinstallerwithHewittSportsturf
contractedtodesignandconstructtheplayingfield.[67]Floodlightsweresuccessfullytestedforthefirst
timeon25June2006,andadaylaterthegoalpostswereerected.[68]
Inordertoobtainthelicencesthestadiumneededtoopen,thestadiumhostedthreenonfullcapacity
events.Thefirst'rampup'eventwasashareholderopendayon18July2006,thesecondanopentraining
sessionfor20,000selectedclubmembersheldtwodayslater.[69][70]Thethirdeventon22July2006was
strikerDennisBergkamp'stestimonialmatchagainstAjax.[71]
TheEmiratesStadiumwasofficiallyopenedbyPrincePhilip,DukeofEdinburghon26October2006it
hadbeenintendedthatQueenElizabethIIwouldopenthestadiumaswell,butshesufferedabackinjury
andwasunabletoattendontheday.[72]PrincePhilipquippedwiththecrowd:"Well,youmaynothavemy
wife,butyou'vegotthesecondmostexperiencedplaqueunveilerintheworld."[73]Theroyalvisitechoed
theattendanceoftheQueen'suncle,thePrinceofWales(laterKingEdwardVIII)attheofficialopeningof

TheEmiratesStadiumisseenbymanyasthebenchmarkfortop
leaguestadiadevelopmentsintheUKandEurope.Itsdesignisa
radicalbreakfromthetraditionsofthe"Englishstyle"stadiaofthe
UnitedKingdomandtheMunicipalmultitenantstadiaofEurope.
Thefocusonspectatorexperienceforbothgeneralspectatorandthe
CorporateorPremiumHospitalityspectatorsmarkedastepchange
instadiadesignandconsequentlyonthefootballbusinessinthe
UK,withArsenalincreasingtheirmatchdayrevenuesby111%.[76]
Thearchitect,ChristopherLeeofPopulous,describedthedesignas
beautifulandintimidating.[77]

TheEmiratesStadiumisathreetieredbowlwithtranslucent
polycarbonateroofingoverthestandsbutnotoverthepitch.[78]The
undersideiscladwithmetallicpanelsandtheroofissupportedby
fourtriangulartrusses,madeofweldedtubularsteel.[78]Twotrusses
span200metres(660ft)inanorthsouthdirectionwhileafurthertwospananeastwestdirection.[78]The
trussesaresupportedbythestadium'sverticalconcretecores,eightofwhichconnectedtothembysteel
tripods.Theyinturneachhousefourstairways,apassengerliftaswellasserviceaccess.[78]Faadesare
eitherglazedorwovenbetweenthecoreswhichallowsvisitorsonthepodiumtoseeinsidethestadium.[78]
TheglassandsteelconstructionwasdevisedbyPopuloustogiveanimpressionthatthestadiumsparklesin
sunlightandglowsinthenight.[78]
Theupper(26,646)andlower(24,425)partsofthestadiumfeaturestandardseating.Thestadiumhastwo
levelsbelowgroundthathouseitssupportfacilitiessuchascommercialkitchens,changingroomsandpress
andeducationcentres.[78]Themainmiddletier,knownasthe"ClubLevel",ispremiumpricedandalso
includesthedirector'sbox.Thereare7,139seatsatthislevel,whicharesoldonlicenceslastingfromoneto
fouryears.Immediatelyabovetheclubtierthereisasmallcircleconsistingof150boxesof10,12and15
seats.Thetotalnumberofspectatorsatthislevelis2,222.Thehighdemandfortickets,aswellasthe
relativewealthoftheirLondonfans,meansrevenuefrompremiumseatingandcorporateboxesisnearlyas
highastherevenuefromtheentirestadiumatHighbury.[79]
Theuppertieriscontouredtoleaveopenspaceinthecornersoftheground,andtheroofissignificantly
cantedinwards.Bothofthesefeaturesaremeanttoprovideasmuchairflowandsunlighttothepitchas
possible.[80]Thestadiumalsogivesanillusionthatsupportersintheuppertierononesideoftheground
areunabletoseesupportersintheuppertieropposite.[78]AspartofadealwithSony,thestadiumwasthe
firstintheworldtoincorporateHDTVstreaming.[81]Inthenorthwestandsoutheastcornersofthe
stadiumaretwogiantscreenssuspendedfromtheroof.

Highbury,itrunsnorthsouth,withtheplayers'tunnelandthe
dugoutsonthewestsideofthepitchunderneaththemainTV
camera.Theawayfansarefoundinthesoutheastcornerofthe
lowertier.Theawaysupporterconfigurationcanbeexpandedfrom
1,500seatsto4,500seatsbehindthesouthgoalinthelowertier,
andafurther4,500seatscanbemadeavailablealsointheupper
tier,bringingthetotalto9,000supporters(theregulation15%
requiredfordomesticcupcompetitionssuchastheFACupand
LeagueCup).[82]
TheEmiratesStadiumpaystributetoArsenal'sformerhome,
Highbury.Theclub'sofficesareofficiallycalledHighburyHouse,
locatednortheastofEmiratesStadium,andhousethebustofHerbertChapmanthatusedtoresideat
Highbury.ThreeotherbuststhatusedtoresideatHighburyofClaudeFerrier(architectofHighbury'sEast
stand),DenisHillWood(formerArsenalchairman)andmanagerArsneWengerhavealsobeenmovedto
EmiratesStadiumandareindisplayintheentranceoftheDiamondClub.[83]Additionally,thetwobridges
overtherailwaylinetotheeastofthestadium,connectingthestadiumtoDraytonPark,arecalledthe
ClockEndandNorthBankbridges,afterthestandsatHighburytheclockthatgaveitsnametotheold
ClockEndhasbeenresitedonthenewclockendwhichfeaturesanewer,largerreplicaoftheclock.The
