EXPERIMENT 1: RC CIRCUIT
Objective
To examine a simple circuit consisting of only one capacitor and one resistor
To determine the capacitor discharge decay time and compare this value to that which is
expected

Theory
A resistorcapacitor circuit (RC circuit), or RC filter or RC network, is an electric circuit
composed of resistors and capacitors driven by a voltage or current source. A first order RC
circuit is composed of one resistor and one capacitor and is the simplest type of RC circuit.
RC circuits can be used to filter a signal by blocking certain frequencies and passing others.
The two most common RC filters are the high-pass filters and low-pass filters; band-pass filters
and band-stop filters usually require RLC filters, though crude ones can be made with RC filters.

SIMPLE HARMONIC MOTION (Simple Pendulum)

Objectives:

To verify simple harmonic motion using the simple pendulum experiment.

To determine which affects the period of oscillation.

Apparatus:
Iron stand
String/thread/yarn
Clamp
Set of weights
Protractor
Stopwatch
Scissors
Meter Stick

Theory:
Simple harmonic motion is a form of periodic motion of a particle, etc., in which the acceleration is always
directed towards some equilibrium point and is proportional to the displacement from this point. This
applies to a simple pendulum experiment also as to Mass on spring, Uniform circular motion, and a
scotch yoke.
The important characteristic in this simple harmonic motion with the simple pendulum is its period. Where
the time it takes to swing back and forth (See Figure 1.0)

Figure 1.0
To increase the period of the harmonic motion, you have to increase the length of the string. And to
decrease the period of the harmonic motion, you have to increase is the gravitational field strength. Note
that mass wont affect the period, it depends on the gravitational field strength. Refer to this equation
below.

Where:

T =2

T = time
L = length of the string
g = gravity

PROCEDURE:
1. Suspend a mass from a cord using a vertical attachment (Make sure that the length of the cord is
enough to swing).
2. Set the initial position of the bob at an angle of 30 degrees. Release the bob and observe the
number of oscillation (swing cycle). Refer to figure 2.0.

Figure 2.0
3. Repeat the procedure and record the time elapsed (s) for each cycle on Table 1.
