Netflix Addiction: An
Exaggeration or a Real Problem?
By Chloe Sierks
Founded in 1997, Netflix is
an on-demand provider of movies and television shows for a
monthly fee.
As of December 2015, Netflix had around 75 million subscribers worldwide. The majority of these subscribers stream
movies and tv shows directly
to their electronic devices using the Netflix app, which allows its users to select movies
or tv shows from a limited list.
Although the app doesnt offer
every movie or tv show ever
made like the companys normal DVD-by-mail program, it
has quite the wide selection that
is pleasing to the subscribers.
In the past three years, Netflix's popularity has skyrocketed
not only in the amount of subscribers but also throughout social media. Over the past year, I
have seen many posts on all the
popular social media websites
that have pertained to Netflix in
some way. However, the most
popular topic that seems to arise
from these users is the concern
of having an addiction to Netflix. Is this claim an actual concern for Netflix subscribers, or
is the situation being exaggerated?
Addiction is a state characterized by compulsive engagement
in rewarding stimuli, despite
adverse consequences. It can be
thought of as a disease or biological process leading to such
behaviors.
In 2015, it was discovered that
Netflix users had watched 42.5
billion hours worth of streaming, and 61% of those users

spent their time binge-watching

television shows. The consequences for watching Netflix
for this many hours are not as
detrimental as other consequences brought on by more
common addictions. It may,
however, cause extreme laziness and procrastination as well
as headaches from staring at the
electronic screen for longs periods of time.
Even though these consequences probably wont cause
Netflixs viewers long-term
harm, it is imperative for each
individual to recognize when
he or she just needs to turn off
Netflix and walk away. Sadly,
it is just not that easy. When Im
deep in a binge-watching session, I usually can find a million excuses to watch just one
more episode. Before I know
it, one episode has turned into
five, and Im stuck wondering
where the day went. Many of
my fellow Netflix users know
this feeling all too well. Even
though this habit has caused
me to prioritize incorrectly and
made me lose some sleep, Im
not actually concerned that I
have an addiction to Netflix or
will ever develop one. Becoming aware of the hours I have
spent on Netflix, however, has
helped me watch less and less
each day.
So, is Netflix addiction a great
concern for our society? I personally do not think so. I think
it is up to the individual to prioritize his or hers own time and
decide how important watching seven straight episodes of
Grey's Anatomy really is.

Snowmaggedon
...Blizzard 2016

By Amy Skillen
By the time this paper is in
the hands of its readers, we will
know: Did the huge blizzard of
the first week of February, 2016
hit, or was all the hype for nothing?
The last few days of school in
January saw students constantly
checking their weather apps and
teachers entering contests about
how much snow would actually
fall.
Teachers also struggled to
create lesson plans for February 1-5. Why plan for a day of
school when the meteorologists
were most certainly promising
at least one snow day, if not a
snow week? We had to decide

whether to plan normally or

switch things up to give us more
flexibility than usual.
By Sunday, the forecast had
changed from snow to rain, at
least according to some sources. Here are some guesses by
students as of Friday, January
29, how many inches of snow
we would get by February 3:
Jade Lemmon - 5
Dayle Davis - 7.75
Montana Martin - 4.5
Payton Schomburg - 7.5
Erika Dietze - 1.5
Kaleigh Farmer - 3
Chloe Sierks - 5
Hannah Miller - 7.5
McKenna Barnhart - 6.5

FCCLA advances
three members to State
By Chloe Sierks

On January 27, Rock Port

FCCLA sent six members and
two chaperones to the regional
STAR event competition at
Northwest Missouri State University.
STAR Events, which stands
for students taking action with
recognition, are competitive
events in which members are
recognized for proficiency and
achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership
skills, and career preparation.
The students who were not participating in STAR Events were
student-evaluator and timers
where they got to experience
all the aspects of STAR Events
firsthand.
This year, the Rock Port FCCLA chapter had one group participate in STAR Events. Paityn
Alberti, Dayle Davis, and Chloe
Sierks presented their project
Like A Diamond in the Sky,
in the category Illustrated Talk.

Their project raised awareness

about the growing concern of
foster care in our community,
state, and nation. The girls
held a book and clothing drive,
which brought in 12 trash bags
full of clothes and 329 books to
take to the Foster Care Closet
in Omaha, they decorated pillowcases for the Foster Care
Closet in Lincoln, and they held
informative meetings for students enrolled in FACS classes
at RPHS.
Dayle, Paityn, and Chloe had
to give their presentation to
three judges, consisting of two
advisors and one student-evaluator. Despite their heightened
nerves, the girls gave an excellent presentation receiving a 97
percent and advancing them to
the state competition. State FCCLA will be held at Tan-Tar-A
in March. Congratulations girls
and good luck at the state competition!

Election
2016
As the Presidential debates continue and we are aware of the activity so nearby surrounding the Iowa Caucus, members of the RPHS
Mass Media class (which studies journalism in addition to producing Blue Jay Corner and the yearbook) weighed in on their current
leanings. Of course, most of the students in the class will not be
eligible to vote this fall and many admitted they were not very wellinformed, but the following graph shows how the election would
turn out if it was up to this small sample of RPHS students.
