MOBILIZING A COMMUNITY:
Reconnecting Pruitt-Igoe,
Physically and Socially, to the greater Neighborhood, City, and Region
Nature Area
Columbia Botto

orate
independent
proposal
A lack of social and
physical mobility has
long played a critical
role in destabilizing
the community
around the Pruitt-Igoe
site. The difficulty
of commuting in
and out of North St.
Louis and the sites
disconnection to the
surrounding city is
preventing the areas
development and
reurbanization.
I am proposing to
create an overlap of
multiple transportation
systems and networks
to reconnect the
Pruitt-Igoe site
to the rest of the
neighborhood, the
city, and the entire St.
Louis region.

By allowing the
copious amount
of vacant lots
surrounding the site
to be incorporated
into a new expanded
greenway network,
the corridor will
provide various
programs for the
neighborhood
and allow the land
(often a brownfield)
to remediate and
prepare for possible
future development.

site contamination
city vacancy
To gain a full
understanding of
the site and gather
information that
would later inform our
design project, we
spent a good portion
of the semester
gathering information
and creating graphics
that studied the
existing conditions
of the Pruitt-Igoe site
and surrounding city.
These studies range
in scales and topics,
but all support the
complex and loaded
nature of the site.

site analysis
For this site-specific
project, we studied
the neighborhood of
Wellston: a beutiful,
historic area of St.
Louis that has been
extremely impacted
by the effects of
de-urbanization. We
did a brief survey of
a site and collected
samples of materials
found.
12
site analysis
Through these found
objects we were able
to construct narratives
about the site that
would inspire our
further designs. We
then cast our samples
in plaster and cut
them open to study
the materiality of
the objects through
sections.

I chose to focus on
a old newspaper I
found on the site,
and I was attracted
to the way the
planes of the paper
in my mold folded
on itself to create a

I designed a small,
temporary shelter
to be placed
on my site. This

space, would
be to observe
found objects and
experience the site
in a different way.

timeline
Florence was
built as a city of
merchants, so
material production
has always been
integrated into the
urban fabric. This
concept remains in
our perception of the
modern city, in which
products such as
tourism, fashion, and
food are legitimized
by a made in
florence label. In this
timeline I break the
history into chapters
of production and
overlap maps of the
growing city with
artifacts of material
cutlure that are
significant to the
development of
Florence.
22
exploring the
streets
In a city such as
Florence, the best
way to understand
the urban design,
history, and culture
of the city is to get
out and walk the
streets. In this project
I studied one of the
most traveled paths
in Florence: from the
Palazzo Vecchio,
over Ponte Vecchio,
and to Palazzo Pitti.
Through perspective
and section drawings,
I observed how the
urban fabric affected
my experience and
how I understood this
well-known area of
the city.

14th street
mapping
Inspired by my time
as an intern in Old
North, I chose to study
the 14th Street Mall
in the neighborhood
for an Urban Design
Class. Through
dedication and
investment of strongwilled individuals,
the planning and
development of the
recent 14th Street
Mall Crown Square
development has
been recognized
nationally as a
successful urban
preservation and
revitalization project.
This mapping
identifies the major
events in history
and active agents
that have shaped
14th Street and the
neighborhood into
what it is today.
