WORKSHOPS CAN BE TAKEN FOR RECERTIFICATION POINTS

On Saturday, January 30, 2016, the Education Department of
The Mariners Museum and the Polynesian Voyaging Society
will offer an SOL-based Teacher Professional Development
Session designed to provide educators with content and
instructional strategies to take back to their classrooms.
Topics include:
*Malama Honua worldwide voyage
*A Comparison of early Polynesian and Powhatan societies
*Climate Change
*How Google Maps and Tourmaker can be used in the
classroom to tie it all together
Cost: $30 which includes the workshop, teaching materials, lunch and admission to the museum.

insights into creating more engaging and stimulating lessons for their students.
Each day-long session will focus on essential background and activities that teachers can take back

Exploring the American Civil War through Primary Sources


June 29 9 A.M.-3 P.M.

Learn how to bring the American Civil War to life for your students through the examination of primary
sources. Well explore such topics as the events that led to war, the role of the ironclads, and the impact of
the war on the battlefront, the home front, and in the slave quarters through an examination of eyewitness
accounts, political cartoons, photographs, and newspapers.

Indigenous People of the Americas: A True Perspective

Before the arrival of Europeans in what would become known as the New World, there were indigenous
people with diverse cultures living throughout North and South America. Well explore several of these
societiesincluding the Powhatans, Aztecs, Mayans, Inuit, and othersand discover the role they have
played throughout history.

Chesapeake Bay: An Estuary in Crisis


July 1 9 A.M.-3 P.M.

Discuss the factors and changes that have contributed to the decline of the Chesapeake Bay. We will examine
the various plants, animals and other organisms that live in and around the Bay. The workshop concludes
with a discussion of the changes we can make in our daily lives to improve the health of the Chesapeake Bay,
or any other watershed in which we may live.

Only $55 per workshop per day.


Price includes workshop, teaching materials, and lunch. Discounts given for multiple workshop registration.
