Snow patrol . Well weve had the heavy rains and flooding,
However, its usually after Christmas that the snow comes along! And
we are now starting to experience some very cold wintry weather!
A few years ago we had a snow patrol on stand-by in case we got
snow or very icy weather. It was in place for two reasonsif we get
heavy snow I cant shift it all by myself to make the grounds accessible
and safe!, and that doesnt just apply to weekends, we have funerals
during the week etc. Also its the same when the temperature drops. I
think everyone knows how icy and dangerous our car park becomes, so
it takes a lot of gritting to make it (and the paths around church) safe.
There was another purpose also and that was for when we get
heavy snow, many of our older parishioners cant and shouldnt go out
in those kind of conditions, so we had a team of people who would
either walk to the shops and get the shopping for them, or use their 4x4s
to get the shopping. If we have in place a list of people willing to help
out, then the parishioners who need this, if it happens, can phone the
Parish Office and we can mobilise people from here. It worked very
well a few years ago, simply because we had the systems in place.
So if you would be willing to be part of the snow patrol, please
fill in the form and hand it to Fr Paul or pop it through the letter-box, or
email the office on: paul.cannon@dioceseofsalford.org.uk and we can
begin compiling our lists. Let us know which aspect you can help out
with, snow clearing and gritting and/or shopping for housebound.
(a few more volunteers have joined the patrolthank you)
Many thanks
Fr Paul.

Please note that the first thing that parents have to do is contact the
Parish Office (telephone on 0161 764 1630 or call in) to book onto

OUR LENTEN PROGRAMME

As usual, we will be having a special Lenten programme each Tuesday evening in Lent (after the 7.00 pm
Mass) in the Parish Centre. The sessions will begin on
Tuesday 16th February.
This year we are using a little publication entitled
Lift up your hearts.
This booklet has been written and published by Dr
Mark Nash who works in the Archdiocese of Southwark,
and is someone myself and Sharon have worked very closely with over the past few years. It is a booklet produced for
the Archdiocese of Westminster, but we have already seen
a copy of it, and the materials in it are excellent, and so
should lead to some good discussion and faith sharing.
It looks at certain scripture passages that are particularly
relevant for the Season of Lent and also for the Year of
Mercy.
We now have copies of the booklet available to buy
this weekend (2.00 a copy). So put the Tuesdays of Lent
dates in you diary now and come and join us. We also have
a selection of books for Lent available to buy at the back of
Church.
Shrove Tuesday is this week! As usual we will have
Mass on Shrove Tuesday and then immediately following
the Mass we gather to prepare the Ashes for Ash Wednesday by burning last years Palms. After that we go into the
Parish Centre for Pancakes. Do join us.
Please remember to bring back to Church this weekend (or
bring them with you on Tuesday evening) the Palm Leaves
you received last Palm Sunday so that we have plenty for
burning to make the Ashes.

THE YEAR OF MERCY

An excerpt from Pope Francis Lenten Message.
After receiving the Good News told to
her by the Archangel Gabriel, Mary, in her
Magnificat, prophetically sings of the mercy
whereby God chose her. The Virgin of Nazareth, betrothed
to Joseph, thus becomes the perfect icon of the Church
which evangelizes, for she was, and continues to be, evangelized by the Holy Spirit, who made her virginal womb
fruitful.
The mystery of divine mercy is revealed in the history of the covenant between God and his people Israel. God
shows himself ever rich in mercy Here is a true love
story, in which God plays the role of the betrayed father
and husband, while Israel plays the unfaithful child and
bride.. This love story culminates in the incarnation of
Gods Son. In Christ, the Father pours forth his boundless
mercy even to making him mercy incarnate. As a man,
Jesus of Nazareth is a true son of Israel; he embodies that
perfect hearing required of every Jew by the Shema, which
today too is the heart of Gods covenant with Israel: Hear,
O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord; and you shall love
the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your
soul, and with all your might (Dt 6:4-5). As the Son of
God, he is the Bridegroom who does everything to win over
the love of his bride, to whom he is bound by an unconditional love which becomes visible in the eternal wedding
feast.
Mercy expresses Gods way of reaching out to the
sinner, offering him a new chance to look at himself, convert, and believe (Misericordiae Vultus, 21), thus restoring
his relationship with him. In Jesus crucified, God shows his
desire to draw near to sinners, however far they may have
strayed from him. In this way he hopes to soften the hardened heart of his Bride.
