In an labor context where collectives and associations of artists and curators are generally established to focus on producing works and discourse, it is refreshing and enviableto say
the leastto meet a group of professionals who are genuinely
interested in how those works and those discourses are received
by diverse audiences. In 2011, when they decided to formalize themselves as a platform dedicated to professional collaboration exchanging knowledge, the members of the Plataforma
Arte-Educacin (PAE, Art/Education Platform) had already been
meeting for quite some time at a Mexico City caf to share their
interests in art and education. Mnica Amieva, Violeta Celis, David Miranda, Samuel Morales, and Felipe Ziga all worked in
different cultural institutions around the city, and they were united by similar concerns, as well as the need to share and confront
ideas and experiences in their jobs. It isnt that art/education
wasnt already present as a theme in various Mexican museums
exhibition programs. However, such programs usually operate
according to demanding timelines that concentrate their energy
on operating and completing the activities in questionwithout
allowing time to reflect on the results after these activities implementation. Hence the surprise and professional delight of meeting these group; hence, too, the importance of their efforts as a
pluralistic project-generating organization.
As of the PAEs official inception, they encountered more
and more opportunities to put into practice what they had been
discussing for some time. How to build knowledge and achieve

This session focused on a public composition device as a soundmixing exercise and appropriation of the disc jockey as a figure.
Passers-by on Regina Street were convened to share anecdotes
about the city that involved some kind of specific sound memorythrough the selection of recovered records, printed with adjectives and other wordswith the goal of describing an urban
mood. These different musical appropriation-based compositions were audio-recorded for subsequent exhibition.

Snchez Rull y Roberto Turnbull.
No obstante,

teora cientfica o algn concepto filosfico inditos. Tambin
lo tanto, nuevos ordenes sensibles an no catalogados y afectos

cal occurrence, or some unpublished scientific theory or philosophical concept. Another example would be a work of art that
transforms, from the moment of its appearance onward, certain
naturalized understandings of the present, the past, or even the
future. However, far from introducing a hierarchy, events burst
into life like a difference, creatively contributing other ways to
build and experience life itself.
According to Deleuze and Guattari, another suggestive way
to conceive works of art as events is through the notion of monuments: no longer of the past, but of the present. Retro-forecasting
monuments that disrupt, spill over, and deepen our experiences
of the here and now. It is in this way that an artistic event can be
addressed: through its openness and resulting capacity to produce a whole other chain of events and singularities in everything
experienced by whomever completes or co-creates it. Thus, the
artistic event produces knowledge inasmuch as it introduces new
questions and, therefore, new (still uncategorized) sentient orders and affections that renew our visions of the world.
However, why should we reflect on this notion of art as an
event in the context of an experimental pedagogical listening
program like Radials? First of all, because it is a tool to render
knowledge-production methodologies horizontal through art, a
subject that has been of constant concern in the PAEs projects.
Second of all, because the art/education activations function
precisely as catalysts for listening situations, triggers capable of
interrupting the everyday coordinates of our aural experiences
and, above all, because they were activations susceptible to being reproduced in settings that exceed the artistic realm.
Lets ask ourselves: who is capable of what? How can we
redistribute our role as educators, our own discourses, our activities within the framework of artistic production, our means
of conceiving relationships among everyone who participates in
this distribution? In order to find more fertile soil, discursively
and institutionally speakingdisruptive with respect to the hierarchy that encompasses existing artists, curators, educators,
and viewers, as well as the capacities associated with them
perhaps we should consider the fact that, more than working
with objects, we work with processes. The timing of works of
art, their duration, is an active element to consider if we want to

performed an exercise that employed drawing as a tool for visualizing the participants compositions, translating the abstract
experience of sound into a visual realm, which helped produce
diverse reflections on this experience. Participants engaged in
this exercise after exploring the facilities with their eyes blindfolded, recognizing the listening experience as a different field altogether once it becomes ones only relationship with the world.
As a kind of coda to this workshop, the artist Ornella Delfino,
along with members of the PAE, designed a sound device for
exploring the possibilities of everyday objects and materials by
amplifying their sounds, making use of contact microphones as a
sounding board, which Federico Valdez used as an instrument to
interpret the compositions produced there. Where is the artists
work? In the devices, in the actions, or in the results?

11/27/14 11:12 AM
Radials: Experimental Listening Situations emerges from an interest in listening as a social practice present in our everyday
life. This practice is exercised in contexts as diverse as health,
the media, and new media art. For PAE members, the relevance
of listening within the art/education field is undeniable, as it
permits us to address the field of reception. The most frequently
recurring stances in art institutions are based on making the
viewer see. Narratives seek to guide the gaze and direct interpretation processes with respect to works of art and aesthetic
experiences. By contrast, listening involves processes of coming and going from the field of subjectivity toward objective phenomena. In this sense, the PAE seeks to privilege an interest in
listening over and above the urgency of saying or explaining. The
diverse listening practices united in this project point toward different ways in which listening produces knowledge: through
the body and emotions; the development of an informed, critical
opinion; openness to others; and the development of empathy.
Perhaps the most relevant aspect of a residency like this one
is the chance to develop utterings from within the field of artistic
practice in a shared, collective waychallenging the frameworks
derived from the efficient production of finished works and projects, which largely originate from the massive consumption afflicting contemporary society.

Step 3: Write down a list of sounds youd like to use in juxtaposition with the postures and gestures you already chose. You can
keep the following things in mind when making your list:
a) It could be a sound you heard in the same place where
you observed the posture and gesture.
b) It could be a sound with no connection at all to the
place, posture, or gesture, but one you would nonetheless
like to associate with what you observed
c) Try to avoid thinking of songs or specific pieces of music.
Think about concrete sounds, words uttered with a specific
intention, abstract sounds.

PLATAFORMA ARTE-EDUCACIN
(PAE, ART/EDUCATION PLATFORM)
This group formed in 2011 as a joint effort among professionals working
in the educational sphere in museums and visual art-focused spaces in
Mexico City. Together, they sought to establish collaborative networks among
different cultural agents and fields of knowledge. Currently, the PAE is an
open, dynamic, pluralistic organization that creates projects promoting collaborative practices associated with the art/education pairing. In its projects and initiatives, the PAE forms temporary working groups that consist
of educators, artists, and curators, as well as independent cultural agents,
researchers, and teachers who are interested in horizontal, multidisciplinary
forms of creativity. The PAEs lines of work are co-creation, cooperation, and
participation with diverse groups and agents.
