PhysicalArrangement
Thisclassroomwasdesignedwithafocusonmaximizingstudentlearning
andcreatingasafe,comfortableenvironment.Allofthechairsfacethewhiteboard
atthefrontoftheroomtominimizedistraction.Therearetwoportableeaselsthat
canbemovedaroundtheclassroomforlessons.Oneofthemostimportantfeatures
ofthisroomisthereadingarea.Aspecialcozyareaisprovidedforwholegroup
readaloudsaswellasindividualreadingtime.Therearemanyshelvesinthisroom
tocreatestoragethatisaccessibleforthestudents.
Theshelveswillcontainlotsandlotsofbooksof
course,butalsotechnology(headphones,laptops,
iPads),andothersupplies.TheRentalCenter(an
ideafrom
SettingLimitsintheClassroom
)atthe
frontoftheroomcontainssupplies,staplers,three
holepunches,pencilsharpeners,coloringmaterials,
paper,folders,etc.thatthestudentscanrentifthey
needandreturnwhenfinished.Eachtablealsohasa

smallbucketforeverydaysupplieslikepencilsandpens.Anotherimportant
featureinthisroomisthedesignateddisplayareabehindthekidneytable.This
sectionofthewallwouldfeaturespecificinformationrelevanttocurrentcontent
areaunitsaswellascompletedstudentwork.Iwouldalsoliketodoastudentof
theweekspotlightonthewallbetweenthelockersandthedoor.Finally,thereisa
sinkwithawaterfountaininthebackoftheroom,plentyofwasteandrecycle
bins,andaclasspettohelpteachthestudentsresponsibilityandcleanliness.

CooperativeLearning
Thisclassroomincorporatesmanyopportunitiesforcooperative
learning.Thestudentsareseatedincirculartableswith2or3of
theirpeerstopromoterelevantdiscussions.Iveaddedlotsof
spaceforsmallgrouplessons,groupwork,andlearningcenters
byaddingtheroundtables,kidneytable,andspacearoundthe
cozyreadingarea.Thesedesignatedareasandworkspaceshelp
enforcetheimportanceofworkingtogetherandlearningfrom
oneanother.

RecordKeeping
Maintainingclear,organized,anddetailedstudentrecordsisvitalin
establishinganefficientlearningenvironment.Keepingmyattendanceandgrade
bookuptodatehelpsmeprovideevidenceofstudentachievement,highlightareas
forstudentimprovement,andoverallmakeinformeddecisionsregardingstudent
progress.IwillusetheWhaleythreelinegradebookasrecommendedbyWongto
easilykeeptrackofstudentattendance,dailyscores,andtheircumulativetotal.In
additiontothisbasicinformation,Iwillmaintainassessmentfoldersforeach
individualstudent.Thesefolderswillcontainspecificassessmentresults(test
scores,FASTresults,runningrecords,etc.)andwillbeusedforconferences,
programreferrals,andadministrativeviewing.Sincemaintainingthesefolderswill
bemyresponsibility,Ithinkitimportantforstudentstoalsohavetheresponsibility
forkeepingtrackoftheirownprogress.Onewayinwhichstudentswill
accomplishthisisthroughtheirpersonalportfolios.Throughouttheyearstudents
willselectworkfromdifferentcontentareastorepresenttheirgrowthand
achievementandtakeprideintheirwork.Studentswillalsokeepindividual
readinglogs.Keepingtrackofwhattheyarereadingwillhelpthestudentsand
myselfinseeingthebiggerpictureofeachstudentasareader.Theselogswillhelp
meinforminstruction,recommendtitlestoindividualstudents,andhelpstudents
makeinformedreadingselections.

NewStudents

Newstudentswillbewelcomeinmyclassroom.Beforearrival,Iwillask
myclasstowriteashortnoteaboutthemselvestogivetothenewstudent.Iwill
previewthesenotesandthengivethemtoournewstudentuponarrivalsoheor
shewillbeintroducedtoeach
classmateandfeelwelcometoour
classroomfamily.Thenewstudents
namewillbeaddedtothebottomof
theattendancechart,anassessment
foldercreated(recordsfromhisorher
oldschoolmaybeaddedtothis
folder),andtheirpersonalportfolio
started.Newstudentswillbeassigned
abuddytohelpshowthemaroundthe
schoolandintroducethemtopeers.I
willbethoughtfulinselectingbuddies
andwillrequireaverbalcontract
fromthebuddystatinghis/herwillingnessandexcitementinacceptingtheirduties
asanewstudentbuddy.Additionally,ourclassroomislabeledtoenhanceliteracy
andstudentindependence,makingiteasierfornewstudentstofamiliarize
themselveswiththeclassroom.

SubstituteTeachers

Unfortunately,therewillbetimeswhenIamnotabletobeinthe
classroom.Onsuchoccasions,Iwouldliketoprovideasmuchinformationtomy
substituteteacherasIcantohelpmaketheirexperienceandthoseofthestudents
aspleasantaspossible.TodothisIwillcreateaSubstitutebinderwiththe
followinginformation:aWelcome/ThankYounote,LessonPlansandActivity
Ideas,ourWeeklySchedule(lunch,recess,andspecialstimes),Student
Information,andEmergencyInformation.Ourclasswillalsohaveadiscussionin
thebeginningoftheyearaboutmaintainingappropriatebehaviorregardlessof
whetherIamthereornot.

DisciplinaryPolicies&Procedures

Rules

Duringthefirstdayofschool,wewillworktogetherasaclasstocomeup
withourclassroomrules.Wewillwritethoserulesonaposterandeachstudent
willsigntheirnameatthebottom.Studentswilltakeprideintherulestheyhelped
createandbewillingtoupholdthem.Classroomprocedureswillbetaughtthefirst
weekofschool.Theywillbepracticedandreinforcedasneededinthefollowing
weeks.

Consequences
Havingawellthoughtout,thoroughclassroommanagementsystemisthe
firststepinminimizinginappropriatebehaviorandmaximizinglearning.However,
rulesandprocedureswillbetestedattimesandpreparationforthosetimesis
important.Intheseoccasions,consequenceswillfollow.Mygoalinreinforcing
consequencesistorejectpoorbehavior,notthestudentcarryingoutthe
misbehavior.Iwillnevershame,belittle,orcriticizemystudents.

MinorInfractions:

section.Ifastudentmisbehaves(doesnot
followdirections,interrupts,doesnot
followclassroomrulesandprocedures,etc.)
theywillbetoldtoclipdown.Thechart
givesstudentstheopportunitytomake
betterchoicesandmovebackup.Iwill
recordwherestudentsclipsareattheend

oftheday.IfastudentlandsonDavyJonesLockeratanypointduringtheday,
parentswillbecontactedandnotifiedofthemisbehavior.
Inadditiontothebehaviorclips,weuselogicalconsequencesinour
classroom.Logicalconsequencesareconsequencesthatnaturallyorlogically
followthemisbehavior.Theyarenotpunitive,ormeanttopunish,butarerather
meanttobelearningopportunities.Forinstance,ifastudentlinesup
inappropriatelyforspecials,theywillbetoldtotryitagain.Iftwostudentsare
talkingduringinstruction,theywillbeseparated.Recesswillnotbetakenaway,
butifastudentchoosestowasteinstructionaltime,theywillneedtomakeupthat
timeatsomeotherpointduringtheday.

MidLevelInfractions
:
Whenastudentrepeatedlyengagesinaspecific
misbehavior,particularlyifthisbehaviorinterfereswithinstructionordisrespectsa
peerormyself,thiswouldclassifyasamidlevelinfraction.Midlevelinfractions
willoftenrequirecooldownsand/ortimeouts.Voluntarycooldownswillbegiven
asanoptionforstudentstotakeamomentalone,collectthemselves,andchooseto
makegooddecisions.Whenastudentreceivesatimeouttheywillgotothe
designatedareaandatimerwillbesetfor5minutes.Anyworkorinstructional
timethestudentmisseswillneedtomadeup.Midlevelinfractionsmightalso
involveaprivateconferencewithmetodiscusstheirchoicesandbetteroptions,
and/orparentinvolvement.
Cheatingisunacceptableinmyclassroom.Wewillhaveadiscussioninthe
beginningoftheyearabouttheimportanceofcreatingandtakingresponsibilityfor
yourownwork.Ifastudentiscaughtcheatingtheywillberequiredtoredothe
assignmentandparentswillbenotified.

ExtremeInfractions:
Severelyaggressiveandviolentbehaviorthatthreatensthe
safetyofmystudentsandmyselfisanextremeinfraction.Studentsengagingin
suchbehaviorwillbeswiftlyremovedfromtheclassroomandsenttotheprincipal.
Ifremovingthestudentfromtheroomisnotviable,therestoftheclasswillbe
senttoanother2ndgradeclassroomandadditionalassistancefromother
professionalswillbesought.Ifthestudentwhoperformsthisinfractionisona
behaviorplan,thestepsspecifiedbytheplanwillbeimmediatelycarriedout.The
safetyofallofmystudentsismyforemostconcern.

ParentSupport

Parentalsupportisveryimportanttome.Gainingparentstrustandrespect
isanimportantstepinbeingabletoprovideeachstudentwiththebestsupportI
cangive.Iwillfollowtheconsequencesabove,butwilloccasionallyneed
additionalsupportfromparentstohelpenforcethoserulesandconsequences.In
theseoccasionsIwillcontactparents,informthemofthesituation,sharemy
disciplineplan,andaskfortheirwillingnesstoattendaconferenceifneeded.

AdministrativeSupport
Administrativesupportwillbesoughtafterappropriateinterventionshave
beenimplementedandwereunsuccessful.Extremeinfractionswillresultinavisit
totheschoolprincipal.Studentswillalsobesenttotheofficeforalldiscipline
problemsspecifiedbyourschoolpolicyandstateeducationalcode(thesepolicies
canbefoundonourdistrictswebsite).Wheneverastudentissenttotheoffice,
parentswillbenotified.

Professionalism&Ethics

Asateacher,Iamarolemodelandmentorforeverystudentinthebuilding.
IwillstrivetobethebestIcanbeinandoutoftheclassroom.Iwillcontinueto
pursuemyowngrowthandlearningbyattendingdistrictworkshops,conferences,
andcontinuingtotakeeducationclasses.Iwillpresentmyselfprofessionally
throughmyattire,demeanor,actions,andwords.Iwillnotengageinofficegossip
andstrivetobuildmeaningful,collaborative,lastingrelationshipswithmy
colleaguesandadministration.IwillparticipateinProfessionalLearning
Communities,sharemyideas,andlearnfromothers.Iwillupholdallpoliciesand
proceduresoutlinedbythedistrictandschool.IfIstronglydisagreewithaschool
policyorthewayinwhichasituationwashandled,Iwillraisemyissuealongwith
alternativesuggestions/ideastotheappropriatepartyinprivate.

ExpectationsforStudents
Letterswillbesenttoparentsandstudentspriortothefirstday
ofschoolwelcomingstudentsandtheirfamiliestomyclassroom
andexplicitlydescribingexpectationsforstudents.These
expectationswillbeclearlypostedintheclassroom,discussedand
demonstratedwithstudentsonthefirstdayofschool,and
consistentlyreinforcedthroughouttheyear.Ibelievethatallof
mystudentscanandwillsucceed.IwilldoeverythingIcantobe
thebestteacherIcanbe,andexpectthefollowingofmystudents:
o Followtheclassroomrules.
o Followtheclassroomprocedures.
o Bereadytolearn.
o Doyourworkwellandontime.
o Participateshareyourideas,listenandlearnfromothers.
o Reflectonyourwork.
o Pushyourselftrynewthingsandaskforhelpwhen
needed.

StudentJobs
Havingjobsintheclassroomisagreatwaytoencourageresponsibilityand
initiativeinstudents.Iwillkeeptrackofwhichjobsstudentshavehadandswitch
thematthebeginningofeachweek.Studentswillberesponsibleforeachjobat
leastoncethroughouttheyear.Thefollowinglistofstudentjobswillbe
incorporatedinourclassroom:

him/herselftoshareduringtheweek.Getstobelineleaderandhelpteacher

(desks,tables,sinkarea,etc.)

willrunerrands/delivernotestotheofficeorotherteachersfor

willensureclassroompethasfood,water,andaclean

willsharpenthepencilsinthedullpencilbox.

willsupervisetheRentalCenterandensurestudentsleave
acollateralitemandsuppliesarereturnedwhennolongerinuse.

theirdesignatedlocation.

willmakesurestudentspushintheirchairswhenleaving
theirdesksandensureschairsarestackedattheendoftheday.

havetheopportunitytobeStudentofWeekonce.Wherethereisnotadesignated
FirstMate,theSecondMatewillassumethoseresponsibilities.

HomeworkPolicy

Homeworkistobecompletedtothebestofthestudentsabilityandturned
inontime.Homeworkwillbeusedsparinglytoreinforcewhatislearnedinclass.I
willneversendbusywork,orworkthatcoverstopicsnotyetaddressedinclass
hometobecompletedashomework.Forthatreason,Iexpectstudentstoattempt
tocompletehomeworkbythemselves.Homeworkwillbeassessedforcompletion
ratherthancorrectness.Parentsandsiblingsmaybeusedasresources,butmyjob
istoassessstudentsknowledgeandlearning,nottheknowledgeoftheirparentsor
siblings.

LeavingtheClassroom

BathroomProcedure:

Therewillbe2clothespinclipslocatedbythedoor,one
for"lads"andonefor"lasses.Whenastudentneedstogotothebathroom,they
willsimplyputtheappropriateclipontheirshirt(collarorshortsleeve),makeeye
contactwiththeteacher,andgo.Studentswillputtheclipbackuponreturn.Inthis
way,classroomdistractionisminimized,theteacherisawareofthestudents
location,nomorethan2studentscanbeinthebathroomatatime,andproperclip
placementensuresthatstudentsneednottouchitwhileusingthebathroomto
maintaingoodhygiene.

HallPass:

Hallpasseswillbeusedifastudentneedstoleavethe
classroomtorunanerrand(deliveramessage,gototheoffice,goto
thelibrary,etc.).Therewillbe3clipslabeled"hallpass,"locatedby
thedoor.Studentswillagainplacetheclipontheirclothingfromthe
chestup,askforteacherpermission,runerrand,andputtheclipback
uponreturn.Nomorethan3studentscanberunningerrandsatatime
unlessteacherspecified.

Specials:

Teacherwillwalkwithstudentstospecials(art,music,P.E.)andbackto
theclassroomwhenfinished.Studentsarenottoleavetheirspecialsunless
accompaniedbyanadult.

Recess/Lunch:
Beforeleavingtheclassroomforrecessorlunch,studentswill
makesuretheirworkareasarecleanandorganizedandformasinglefilelineby
thedoortosignifytheirreadinesstoleave.Theshipcannotdepartwithoutallits
crewmembersandtheCaptainspermission.Theteacherwillwalkthestudentsto
recess/lunchandpickthemup.

EndofDayDismissal:

OncetheCaptaingivestheappropriatesignal,students
willcleantheirindividualworkareas,gathertheirmaterials,coats,andbackpacks,
andtheChairCaptainwillhelpmakesureallchairsarestackedattheendofthe
day.Whenready,theteacherwillaccompanystudentstotheirdesignatedparent
pickup,buspickup,orafterschoolprogramareas.

LunchandBusProcedures

DailyLunchProcedures:

Therewillbe4jarslocatedbytheentrywayalong
withpopsiclestickslabeledwiththestudentsnames.Thejarswillbelabeledwith
thedailyhotlunchoptions(withwordsaswellpictures),acoldlunchoption(if
studentsbroughttheirlunchfromhome),andahomeoption(ifstudentsreturn
homeforlunch).Uponenteringtheclassroomeachmorningstudentswillfindthe
popsiclewiththeirnameonitandplaceitinthejaroftheirchoice.

BusProcedures:

Alistofbusnumbersandthestudentswhoridethemwillbe
postedbythedooroftheclassroom.Studentswhoridebuseswillgatherinthe
multipurposeroomafterschoolandwillbedismissedbysupervisingteachersas
theirbusesarrive.Ifastudentwill

beridingthebusonanygivenday,parents
willneedtoinformtheteacherand/ortheofficesoadjustmentscanbemade.

SmallGroupProcedures
Inordertomaximizestudentlearningandprovideeachstudentwith
instructiongearedtowardstheirindividuallearningneedsandinterestsIwillmeet

BrainBreaks:IncorporatingMovement
Childrenareexpectedtositandlearnforhoursatatimeduringtheschool
day.Ourbrainsneedsbreaks,andourbodiesneedmovement!BrainBreaks
providetheopportunityforstudentstostretchtheirbodiesandreenergizetheir
brains.Researchhasshownthatincorporatingmovementintheclassroom
optimizesstudentsmindsandbodies(Erwin,Fedewa,Beighle,&Ahn2012).
Physicalactivitywillbeincorporatedinconjunctionwithcontenttoreinforce
conceptsandmaterialattimesandothertimeswewillmovetojustgiveourbrains
awelldeservedbreak.

DifferentiationinTheClassroom

Studentshavedifferentstrengths,needs,learningstyles,andinterests.In
ordertohelpeachindividualstudentexcelinmyclassroom,differentiated

instructionisvital.Gettingtoknowstudentsisthefirstcrucialstepinthisprocess.
OnceIknowmystudentsIcandifferentiateaccordingly.Onthemostbasiclevel,
thisinvolvesprovidingextrasupport,scaffolds,andtimewhenneeded.Italso
involvesacceleratingmaterialwhenneeded,introducingnewchallenges,and
providingincreasedopportunitiesforindependentwork.Additionally,Iwillusea
varietyofteachingmethodstoappealtovariouslearningstyles.Providingstudents
withchoicesfordemonstratingtheirlearningwillincreasestudentmotivationand
helpeachstudentbestexpressthemselvesandtheirknowledge.

GroupingStrategies

Iwilluseavarietyofgroupingstrategiesbasedonstudentabilityand
performance.OurdistricthasaGiftedandTalentedprogram.Studentswhohave
beenaskedtoparticipateinthisprogramwillbepulledoutoftheclassroomfor12
hourseachweektoworkwiththeGiftedresourceteacher.Ourschoolisalsolucky
tohaveareadingspecialist,speechandlanguagespecialist,andanEnglish
LanguageLearningresourceteacher.Studentswithneedsintheseareaswillalso
bepulledoutoftheclassroomtoworkwiththeresourceteacherforaperiodof
timethatmatchestheirindividualneeds.
Withinourclassroom,Iwillincorporateflexiblegrouping.ThismeansIwill
formsmallgroupsofstudentstoworkwithatthebeginningofaunitbasedontheir
needsandreadinessforlearningthematerial.Iwillworkwitheachgroup
separately,focusingontheneedsofthatgroup.Becausestudentshavestrengthsin
differentareas,thesegroupswillhopefullybefluidanddynamic.Iwillalso
occasionallyuseperformancebasedcooperativelearninggroups.Basedon
observationsandcompletedwork,Iwillassignasmallgroupofstudentsataskto
extendtheirlearningbeyondwhatiscoveredintheclasscurriculum.These
studentswillworktogetherandpresenttheirfinishedproducttotheclass.

Daily5
TheDaily5,developedbyBousheyandMoser,isaframeworkfor
organizingliteracytimeintheclassroom.Studentsareprovidedwithauthentic
readingandwritingactivitiestochoosefromandworktowardstheirownpersonal
goals.Thechoicesfitintofivecategories:ReadtoSelf,WorkonWriting,Readto
Someone,ListentoReading,andWordWork.Thisframeworkprovidesexcellent
opportunitiesfordifferentiation.Studentsareworkingtowardstheirown
personalizedgoalsattheirownindependentreadingandwritinglevels.While
studentsareworkingtheteachercangatherwithsmallgroupsorhaveoneonone
timewithindividualstomeetstudentsvariouslearningneeds.Daily5allows

studentstochooseliteracyactivitiesthatbestmeettheirlearningstyles,levels,and
interests.

ParentCommunication

Continuousandopencommunicationbetweenparentsandtheirchilds
educatorisvitalinprovidingthesupportiveenvironmentallstudentsneedtothrive
intheclassroom.Iwillcontactparentsbeforetheschoolyearbeginstointroduce
myselfandaskthemifthereisanythingtheywouldlikemetoknowabouttheir
child.Ibelieveparentsshouldbeinformednotjustwhentheirchildmisbehaves,
butalsowhentheyaccomplishsomethinggreat,achieveapersonalgoal,show
kindnesstoaclassmate,fallinlovewithanewbook,etc.Inadditiontothe
personalphonecallsandemailswithparents,Iwillalsopreparemonthly
newslettersforstudentstotakehome.Thesenewsletterswillhaveimagesofthe
studentsworking,discusswhatwevelearned,andexplainfutureunits,lessons,
objectives,andgoals.Parentsareencouragedtositdownandlookoverthese
newsletterswiththeirchild.Studentswillbethrilledtoshowtheirparentswhat
theyvebeenworkingonandexcitedtosharetheirnewknowledge.Ifparentshave
anyquestions,theyarewelcometocontactmeatanytime.
