AkaiMPCs(originallyMIDIProductionCenter,nowMusicProductionController)are
apopularseriesofelectronicmusicalinstrumentsoriginallydesignedbyRogerLinnand
producedbytheJapanesecompanyAkaifrom1988onward.Intendedtofunctionasa
powerfulkindofdrummachine,theMPCsdrewondesignideasfrommachinessuchasthe
SequentialCircuitsInc.Studio440andtheLinn'sownLinn9000,combiningapowerful
MIDIsequencerwiththeabilitytosampleone'sownsounds.AmajorinfluencetoRoger
Linn'sdesignwashisloveofrubberpadsandhowtheycouldbepushed,prodded,and
bangedthiscanbeseenclearlyinhisdesignsespeciallyfromtheMPC60onwards.Linn
alsohadapassionforsquares:thus,noroundpadsontheMPCSeries.Latermodelsfeature
increasinglypowerfulsampling,storage,interfacingandsoundmanipulationfacilities,which
broadentheuseofinstrumentbeyondjustdrumandrhythmtracks.

History
TheoriginalMPC60wasafirstresultofalliancebetweenRogerLinnandAkaitodesignproductssimilartothoseofLinnElectronics.[1]Hedeveloped
thefunctionaldesign,includingthepanellayoutandsoftware/hardwarespecifications.Hethencreatedthesoftwarewithateamofengineers.The
hardwareelectronicsweredesignedbyEnglishengineerDavidCockerellandhisteam.[2]CockerellwasafoundingmemberofthesynthesizerfirmEMS
(cocreatoroftheirfamousVCS3alongwithPeterZinovieff[3]),andthenworkedforeffectsmanufacturersElectroHarmonix.
ShortlyaftertheMPC60'srelease,theMPC60IIwasdesigned.Releasedin1991,theMPC60IIofferedmostofthesamefeaturesastheMPC60,with
anaddedheadphoneoutputandaplastichousingreplacingtheoriginalmetalone.[4]In1994,AkaireleasedtheMPC3000,whichboasted16bit,44kHz
sampling,32voicepolyphony,andSCSIdatatransfer.[5]AkaitriedtosavemoneybydroppingRogerLinn,thebrainchildbehindtheMPC,towhom

theywouldhavetopayroyaltiesonfuturemodels.ThecompanydevelopedandreleasedtheMPC2000withoutLinnin1997.[2]TheMPC2000came
with2MBofRAM,anoptionaleffectsboard,anda100,000note64tracksequencer.[6]TheMPC2000wasreplacedbytheMPC2000XLin2000.The
MPC2000XLaddedanimproved300,000notesequencer,a64trackmixerandtimestretchandresamplefeatures.Fourlimitededitionmodelsofthe
MPC2000XLwerereleased.[6]
In2002AkaiunveiledtheMPC4000,themostpowerfulMPCevermade(higherbitdepthandsampleratethanthelater5000).TheMPC4000featured
8assignableoutputs,aharddriveandCDROMdrive.TheMPC4000'smemorycouldbeexpandedtoupto512MBofRAM,thelargestamountonan
MPCtodate.[7]OnlytwoyearsafterthereleaseoftheMPC4000,AkaireleasedtheMPC1000,whichwasthesmallestintheMPCproductlineatthe
timeofitsrelease.ItwasalsothefirstMPCtoutilizeCompactFlashmemory.[8]BoththeMPC2500andtheMPC500wereaddedtotheAkaiMPC
seriesin2006.TheMPC2500isamidrangeMPCwith8assignableoutputsandCompactFlashstorage.[9]Designedforportability,theMPC500
features1MIDIIn/OutandCompactFlashstorage,andcanbepoweredby6AAbatteries.[10]
AtNAMMin2012AkaiunveiledalineofcontrollersnamedtheMPCRenaissance,andMPCStudiowhichworkwithMPCRenaissancesoftwareon
MacorWindowscomputers.AdditionallytheyunveiledtheMPCFly,aniPad2andiPad(3rdgeneration)controllerwhichrunsontheiPadMPCFly

September,2012TheMPCRenaissancewaspubliclyreleased.TheRenaissanceisthefirsthybridMPCcombiningthecomputerwithMPChardware.
