NAPA Release 2008.2

Update Info 2008.2

Update Info 2008.2

1 General
This Update Info for the NAPA Release 2008.2 is a summary of the new features and improvements that have been
made to the NAPA system since the last major release 2008.1.
A list of corrected errors is presented in the last chapter of this Update Info.
The NAPA executable file is named napa082.exe. All executable versions of NAPA must be accompanied with a
compatible version of the NAPADB. The file napadb082.db is to be used together with napa082.exe.

2 Operating system versions

The following operating system versions are currently supported:
Windows:

Windows 2000 Professional + minimum of Service Pack 4 with Exceed 8.0.0 (*

Windows XP Professional + minimum of Service Pack 1 (** with Exceed 8.0.0 (*

SUN:

Solaris 8.0

Note: NAPA Release 2008.2 is the last NAPA version supporting SUN (Solaris 8.0) and Windows 2000.

(* The latest update for Exceed 8.0.0 can be obtained by navigating to:
http://www.hummingbird.com/hummingbirdupdate/index.html
The patches deal with minor issues. The updates are cumulative which means that only the latest one needs to be
installed. However, according to Hummingbird there is no need to apply the patch if you do not encounter any problems
with Exceed.
(** Microsoft virtual machine (Microsoft VM) is included as a part of Windows XP SP1. NAPA Online Manuals use
the Microsoft VM for the search function.

2.1 Situation with Windows Vista and NAPA

Napa has made some successful tests with Windows Vista and it has also been in everyday use. Based on this rather
limited testing made so far, there are no known issues with NAPA that would prevent using it.
However, there has not been enough time to gather enough experience and to do thorough testing. Hummingbird made
a statement that Exceed 8.0 is not compatible with Vista. Because we have not made full scale tests with Vista yet, we
do not recommend running NAPA on Vista and we therefore cannot support using Vista yet.

Note! Sometimes Exceed 8.0.0 gives the error message "All xserver displays are in use. Exceed can not run without
a display. Please try again at a later time" when run on Windows Vista and NAPA can not be started. The easy work
around is to press left mouse button on the NAPA shortcut, and select "run as administrator".

3 Exceed version
The officially supported Exceed version for Release 2008.2 is Exceed 8.0. NAPA is basically compatible with the
newer versions of Exceed, for example, Exceed 11.0. There are no major improvements to the newer versions of
Exceed and there is therefore no need to upgrade to a newer version. Exceed 11.0 cannot be officially supported due to
the following known issues:

Memory leak. Exceed 9.0/10.0/11.0 reserves memory cumulatively and if NAPA is kept running constantly for a
long period of time, all memory will eventually be reserved. This is not a serious problem if NAPA + Exceed is shut
down a couple of times per week as the reserved memory is then released.

Scandinavian characters. The Scandinavian characters are not available with Exceed 11.0.
In addition to previous ones, there are several other known problems with Exceed 12 & 13 (2007 & 2008).

4 Hardware configuration for computers running Windows

The recommended minimum hardware configuration:

Processor: Any 64-bit

Memory: 1 Gb for Win 2000/XP
Disk Space: 60 Gb
Graphics Adapter: 128 Mb memory, Open GL compatible
Network Adapter is required
Screen resolution 1280 x 1024 pixels.

It is, however, possible to run NAPA on a computer with a lower performance. The absolute minimum hardware
requirements would be:

Processor: Up from PentiumIII 1000 MHz

Memory: 128 Mb for NT4, 256 Mb for 2000/XP
Disk Space: 1 Gb
Graphics Adapter: 64 Mb memory, Open GL compatible
Network Adapter is required
Screen resolution 1024 x 768 pixels. It is recommended to start NAPA with Tinylayout if this resolution is used (the
word Tinylayout is entered into the field User Profile in the Login window).

5 User manuals
Updated NAPA user manuals are delivered with the Release 2008.2.
The recommended browser for using the manuals is Internet Explorer. Mozilla can be used but it does not show the
search results' highlights correctly.

8 Grain Stability
8.1 Longitudinal divisions
One classification society wants to apply longitudinal division only for certain types of loads (filled and trimmed).
Previously NAPA either took the division into account or not into account for every type of load, or applied it
automatically if it was deep enough.
Now there are options in the parameters command, to specify for which loads divisions shall be applied. The default is
that a division is automativcally applied if it is deep enough, and this is probably the right setting for most users.
There is a possibility to list whether the division was active or not for a certain result. This is available as the quantity
INFO.
For partial loads, the rule in Part B-5.3 is applied, i.e. the effective length of the division is dependent on the distance to
the compartment walls sideways.
The placement of calculation sections has now been improved so that they are automatically placed at the end of a
non-continuous division, and at the places implied by the effective length of a partial load.

8.2 Side girder grain feeding holes

There is a possiblility to use grain feeding holes in hatch side girders. The calculation works like this:

When loading Filled and trimmed, Filled with untrimmed ends or partial loads, the holes have no effect on the initial
voids.
For filled, untrimmed loads the grain will flow from the effective height, which is calculated from the actual grain
surface like for end beams.

When calculating the grain shift, the grain will flow through the holes at the highest level of the holes, i.e. the effective
height of the girder is from the deck to the highest point of the highest hole.

8.3 Secured grain cargos

A secured grain cargo is a grain load, that has been secured so that the cargo cannot shift. This is usually done by
covering the load with cloth, then on top of the cloth there is planking, and then everything is secured using steel wires.
The grain code specifies in more detailed how this should be done.
Previously in NAPA this could be loaded by defining TYPE for the cargo to be something else than 'GR'. However, you
had to create a new line in the PAR* table and maintain two lines for the same kind of cargo.
In 2008.2, there is the possibility to load the cargo as secured using the SEC option to the load command, or in the GUI,
setting the GFILL column to Secured. Then the grain moment for the load will be zero, and you will not need double
lines in the PAR* table.

8.4 LIST PHM in CR_I task

CR_I?> LIST PHM
Allowable heeling moment list with alternative layout, the same as in the GCR task is now available in CR_I also. The
reason for this is that it now has the ability to add KG-limitations of intact criteria selected with RCR, like list AHM
has.

8.5 VLOAD in GS LIST command

The quantity VLOAD is now available in the LIST command in the GS-task. VLOAD is the volume of the cargo, the
same as in Loading conditions when loading grain cargoes.
For a filled and trimmed compartment (LOAD F), VLOAD is the Net volume, measured up to the maximum load
height or the coaming height whichever is lower. No voids are taken into account.
For a Filled compartment with untrimmed ends (LOAD UTE), VLOAD is the volume of cargo before and aft of the
hatch. In and abreast of the hatch the volume is the net volume of the hold measured up to the maximum load height or
the coaming height whichever is lower. Voids are taken into account only in the untrimmed parts of the hold.
For a filled compartment, untrimmed (LOAD UT), VLOAD is the volume of the cargo outside the hatch way. Within
the hatchway (where the cargo is filled and trimmed), the volume is the volume of the hold up to the max load height or
the coaming height whichever is lower. Voids are taken into account only in the untrimmed parts of the hold.
For partial loads (LOAD [amount]), VLOAD is the net volume of the hold up to the given height. No voids are taken
into account.
In previous releases you had to change the LQ and list different volume quantities depending on the filling type of the
load (VNET or GVOL etc). This was difficult, and even experienced users occasionally made some mistakes with it.
The purpose of VLOAD is that in actual grain heeling moments lists, you can have just one LQ, and in that LQ only one
volume VLOAD. The volume will be the right one whether you run LIST F, LIST UT, LIST UTE or just LIST.

9 Manager applications
9.1 MGR*ENV
MGR*ENV, which is a Manager application for analyzing the longitudinal strength of a bulk carrier, has been
improved. Most of these improvements are related to shear force corrections. The correction can now be calculated for
damaged conditions. The user can also set the correction only for selected loading conditions. In addition, there are
several new lists and diagrams for output of longitudinal strength.

9.2 MGR*BALLAST

Use of profile curve for wind criteria fixed

Exporting result tables to CSV added

9.3 MGR*PROB

B/2 surface offset no longer include shell plate thickness

PHASE = 0 for first stage in damage generation as default (index calculation)
Regulation 8 and 9 now only use one criteria instead of two (intermediate and final)
Results folder renamed and reorganised
HCOLL=0.001 as default for cross flooding devices. This requires both points on the PIPE to be immersed in order
to cross flood. HCOLL=0.001 is set in the OPE*MODELCROSS model table
RULE changed for HULL surface selection in top vardef table
Envelope minGM curve added to minGM report
Long list now use a LQ stored in the NAPADB as default
Interpolation for Reg 8 damage extent improved
New analysing tool: Individual nzone (1-zone, 2-zone etc.) results listing attained index and potential index for the
different drafts. This report includes a list and a diagram for each nzone damage calculation.

9.4 MGR*INCLINING
Inclining test listbox improved

9.5 MGR*LIGHTWEIGHT
Modified to support also ships with a negative frame scale

10 NAPA Emergency Response

Automatic GZ calculation turned off for new scenarios by default

A new button introduced at the top right to manually calculate the GZ curve if outdated

11 Probabilistic damage stability

11.1 Default rule changed for command CAL TAB
The default rule for the command CAL TAB is now SOLASII-1 (SRULE=SOLASII-1) instead of Regulation 25-1
(SRULE=REG25).

11.2 The option ACLASS of the command GEN DAM

The option ACLASS has now two variations ACLASS=DAM (already included in 2008.1 as only ACLASS) and the
new one ACLASS=STA.
All possible scenarios will be generated taking into account how progressive flooding may proceed through A-class
boundaries, which are defined in the subdivision table. A-class boundaries should also be marked in the compartment
connection table by the letter 'A' in the column CLASS.
In case of 'GEN DAM..ACLASS=DAM, the program generates the scenarios as separate damages adding #n,

Update Info 2008.2

7 (8)

n=1,2,..., to the name of the parent damage. The generated #n named damages will have the same control number in the
damage and result tables. As there can be only one control number for each damage in the final calculation, the one
leading to the smallest s-factor will be chosen to be included for the final index calculated by the command CAL
TAB..SRULE=SOLASII-1. The final rule for factor s will be applied for the last stage and the intermediate rule for
possible preceding stages according to normal practice.
In case of 'GEN DAM..ACLASS=STA, the program adds the scenarios to one single damage as separate stages,
having the names #n, n=1,2,... The A-class boundaries divide the damage into several intermediate stages following the
spreading of water. The last stage is the largest one, i.e. having the greatest number of damaged compartments. The #n
named stages are independent stages meaning that rooms listed in possible preceding stages are ignored.
Also in these damages the final rule for factor s will be applied for the last stage and the intermediate rule for the other
stages according to normal practice when calculating by CAL TAB..SRULE=SOLASII-1.

11.3 r=1 for full penetration of the damage

In SOLAS 2009 calculations the sum of the r-factors is now always set to unity up to the penetration B/2. This means
that in cases of zones including difficult shapes, e.g. tunnel shape sterns it is possible to obtain a relevant p-factor for
the zone in question.

11.4 The option CROSS of the command CAL and CAL TAB
It is now possible to generate several additional stages with the CROSS option of the CAL and CAL TAB commands,
e.g
CAL TAB... CROSS=(t1, t2...)
The option adds new stages to the end of the damage case. The stages correspond to the cross-flooding situation at times
t1, t2 etc... The cross-flooding times are calculated according to Resolution MSC.245(83) and the cross-flooding
arrangement is defined in the compartment connection table (argument CCONN). The added stages are called
CROSS<time>s, e.g. CROSS 60s and CROSS600s. Each time (t1, t2 etc) generates one additional stage provided it
does not exceed the total cross flooding time.

12 Loading Conditions GUI

Grain can now be loaded also using right-click menus and the edit tank tool.
