THEORY:
Alternator is a machine, which converts mechanical energy to electrical energy.
Regulation of an Alternator can be calculated by synchronous impedance
method. In OC test the terminals of the alternator are kept opened and a
voltmeter is connected. Keeping speed constant, a relation b/w field current &
open circuit voltage are obtained. In SC test, the terminals are short circuited
with a suitable ammeter & a relation b/w field current & short circuit Current
are obtained.
Voltage regulation:
It is defined as the rise in terminal voltage of an isolated Machine when
full load is thrown off w.r.t voltage on the full load, when speed &
excitation remaining constant.

Now,
Syn.Impedance (ZS) = OC voltage / SC Current

XS = Zs - Ra2

% Regulation = [(E0-V) / V] 100

PROCEDURE:1. Ensure that Mains MCB/DP should be in OFF position.

2. Connect V1 terminals of the circuit to the voltmeter terminals of Voltmeter
(V1).
3. Connect A1 terminals of the circuit to the Ammeter terminals of Ammeter
(A1).
4. Connect V2 terminals of the circuit to the voltmeter terminals of Voltmeter
(V2).
5. Connect A2 terminals of the circuit to the Ammeter terminals of Ammeter
(A2).
6. Connect A3 terminals of the circuit to the Ammeter terminals of Ammeter
(A3).
7. Connect Inputs, outputs terminals of DC Source to Inputs, outputs terminals
of the circuit to provide on the Right side of the front panel.
8. Now connect armature ( A1, A2) and Field (F1, F2) the Motor to the
respective terminals on the panel in circuit diagram.

9. Now connect ( R, B, Y, N) and Field (F1, F2) the Generator to the respective
terminals on the panel in circuit diagram.
10. Switch ON the single phase AC supply and Move the MCB /DP in
upward direction i.e. ON position.
OC test:

1) Move the handle of 3 point starter to left side now the DC motor run
with synchronous speed.
2) Now Switch Sw1 is open position.
3) Now keeping the field current at zero, note the induced emf in
armature duo to residual Magnetism.
4) Now increase the DC Excitation Voltage by moving the Excitation Voltage
control knob towards clockwise direction slowly and observe that there
will be rise in AC Voltmeter (V2).

SC test:
1) Now short terminal R, Y and B Given on the front panel.
2) Now short Sw1 terminals.
3) Move the handle of 3 point starter to Right side now the DC motor run
with synchronous speed.
4) Now increase the DC Excitation Voltage by moving the Excitation Voltage
control knob towards clockwise direction slowly and observe that there
will be rise in AC Ammeter (A2).

Graph:1) A graph is drawn b/w If and V which is known as OC curve, by taking If

on X-axis and V on Y-axis.

2) A graph is drawn b/w If and ISC which is known as SC curve, by Taking If

on X-axis and ISCV on Y-axis.
