About the TOEFL


The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is an exam that measures the ability of non-native
speakers of English understand and use, basically, North American English. Most people who take the
TOEFL test are planning to study abroad. Moreover, many government agencies, jobs, scholarship
programs, and licensing/certification agencies use TOEFL scores to evaluate English proficiency.1
Objective
In this course, students will broaden their knowledge of English with particular emphasis on the
development of different language skills (reading, speaking, listening, and writing) focus on practice based
on the TOEFL exam exercises (ITP or PBT/IBT). Students will build strategies, learn tips and vocabulary for
the test and will continue working on the improvement of English.
Methodology
The course is intended to reinforce the students knowledge of some languages areas or structures that are
still unclear. This will be accomplished through practice tests and exercises 2. Each week, they will focus on
tips and strategies from the different sections of the exam as well as on learning new vocabulary through
activities, and working on some important grammar points. Students will be required to write weekly essays
and do online recordings.
The classes will involve book, online and computer work as well as a series of extra activities such as
games, handouts, quizzes, readings, extra exercises and multimedia in order to enhance the accuracy of the
mentioned skills and the specific strategies form the TOEFL. Moreover, students will improve their
pronunciation, fluency and use of English through debates, discussions, extra activities or presentations.
Students may suggest about specific topics or language areas they wish to work on during the class.
Grading Criteria
Class Participation, attendance, tests, essays, recordings, presentations, book work, homework.
Students must submit the assignments on time.

The practice tests and exercise in the course will try to reproduce the conditions and time pressure of a real
TOEFL test.
