Introduction

BuildSystem Web - An Overview

13-Digit Coding System

All materials, equipments, labour and items of work, in BuildSystem, have a

13-digit code. This code encompasses the MasterFormat and R.S. Means
coding systems.

Materials on BuildSystem Web

BuildSystem web has a database of materials, manufacturers and their

vendors for building construction projects.

New materials, manufacturers and vendors are being regularly added on web.

Users can send inquires to manufacturers for catalogues, price lists and
vendors in different cities.

BuildSystem Web - An Overview

Items of Work and Analysis on BuildSystem Web

BuildSystem web has schedules of rates (items of work and analysis) of

IPMG, CPWD (DSR - civil & electrical) and MORTH (roads).

IPMGs schedule of rates has 5200 items of work with analysis relating to
civil, plumbing, electrical, HVAC and interiors.

Through the 13-digit coding system, all the schedules of rates come on a
common digital platform for updating of material rates.

BuildSystem Estimating Software - An Overview

Master database of CPWD (DSR), MORTH and IPMG has been downloaded
from BuildSystem Web.

Import facilities for adding user defined materials and items in master data.

Allows quick preparation of estimates for selected items of work from master
data.

Facility to modify analysis as per requirement.

Single window option to know total material, labour & equipment usage in
estimate and their cost variance.

Overheads cost can be applied on items or estimated cost.

Generate various types of reports for estimating.

MasterFormat - The Uniform Coding System for

Construction Work

MasterFormat is a master list of numbers and titles classified by work

results or construction practices.

Primarily used to organize project manuals, organize detailed cost

information, and relate drawing notations to specifications.

Covers all types of construction work in a 6-digit coding system in level 1, 2,

and 3. Any title not covered can be added at the appropriate place.

A product of The Construction Specifications Institute, USA.

A national standard in US and Canada, for over 40 years.

Singapore Government has also adopted MasterFormat

MasterFormat - The History

Before the 1960, standard specifications formats didnt exist in United States.

Each architectural, engineering, and contracting firm, as well as every

government agency, had its own organizational system.

That resulted in confusion and miscommunication among everyone involved

in delivering construction projects, which led to costly delays, errors, and
omissions.

In1962, The Construction Specifications Institute, USA developed the concept

of divisions, and sections within each division, to standardize information in
construction project manuals. As a result, Masterformat was evolved.

Since then, Masterformat has been continuously expanded based on inputs

from the construction industry

Summing-up - Cost Estimating using BuildSystem

All published schedules of rates and users own schedule of rates follow
different coding systems.

A uniform coding system is required for items of work, materials,

equipments and labour for development of a master database.

R.S. Means and IPMG provide a 13-digit coding system for development of a
master database.

Estimates can be prepared from the master and previous project databases
faster and accurately by using BuildSystem.

Materials in estimates can be linked with manufacturers and vendors in

different cites for updating of rates.

38

Summing-up - Cost Estimating using BuildSystem

The 13 digit coding system enables the development of a master

database which is required in a computerized system for estimating,
tendering, procurement, billing, and accounting
