The Spirit itself beareth
witness with our spirit,
that we are the children of
God: And if children, then
heirs; heirs of God, and joint-
heirs with Christ . . . .
— Romans 8:16,17
When you were born again, you became a
child of God. As a Christian, you have received the
Spirit of adoption. And according to Romans 8:17, if

you have become a child of God, then you have
become an heir of God and a joint heir with Jesus
Christ.
As heirs of God, we are not paupers. We are not
pilgrims wandering aimlessly through a land looking
for some unknown destination. We are children of
God walking on the King’s Highway, headed for the
streets of gold with joy unspeakable in our heart and

the shine of God’s glory on our face!
Knowing I am a child and heir of God makes me
happy. I’m happy knowing I don’t have to live on the
corner of Barely Get Along Street and Gone-Gone
H E A R T
Avenue. I can move up to Abundance Boulevard,
because I am a joint heir with Jesus Christ.
Many Christians say, “I know I will receive God’s
blessings when I get to Heaven some happy day.”
But we don’t have to wait until we get to Heaven! As
Christians, we are joint heirs with Jesus Christ now.
What belongs to Him belongs to us — right now!
F E A T U R E :
Thank God there are promises of blessings in
Heaven. But as we say where I come from, “I ain’t
there yet!” Thank God for what is promised in the
future, but what about today? Are we supposed to
just get by the best we can, struggling through life,
waiting for “some day” to arrive?
Friend, I want you to understand that “some day”
has already arrived. It’s today! We are joint heirs
with Jesus Christ now. What He has belongs to us
now.
Through Jesus Christ’s blood, we have been
adopted into the family of God and made to be sons
of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ. All that
God has given to Jesus also belongs to us — all of it.

With Christ!
One joint heir doesn’t possess more than another. If
we are joint heirs with Christ, then He doesn’t have
any more than we have.
Some Christians feel unworthy to receive all that
belongs to Jesus. In the Body of Christ, they feel like
the little toe on the left foot, so to speak. But the lit-
tle toe is just as much a part of the body as the head
is, and what belongs to Jesus belongs to every mem-
ber of the Body of Christ.
When God said that His children have been made
joint heirs with Jesus, He meant every child. That
includes you! You are a child of God and a joint heir
with Jesus. The blessings that belong to Jesus
belong to you!
Some people think God only heals and blesses
people who have been living holy lives. Some may
say, “I’ve lived in sin my whole life and just got
saved, so God can’t really bless me the same way He
can bless someone who’s been saved for thirty
years.” That’s what the devil wants you to think. But
the truth is, when you are born again, you immedi-
ately become a joint heir with Jesus Christ!
Yes, the earth and the rest of creation are waiting
to be delivered from the corruption and bondage that
came upon it through sin. And even we wait for the
redemption of our bodies (Rom. 8:22,23). But, thank
God, we don’t have to wait to be released from the
bondages of sin, sickness, lack, and spiritual death!
As Christians, we have already been set free! Now
we can walk in the freedom and blessing that come
from being a child of God and a joint heir with Jesus!
I pray that as this truth becomes real to you, your
heart and faith will be stirred. I pray that you will
rise to a new level in God and live on a higher plane
than you have ever lived before!

 The spirit of man is the candle of the
Lord, searching all the inward parts
of the belly.

T
he writer of the Book of
Proverbs said that the spirit of
man is the candle (or lamp) of
the Lord. That means God will
enlighten and guide us through our
spirit.
Too often, however, we seek guid-
ance every other way except the way
God said it was going to come. We
judge by our physical senses, but
nowhere does God say He will guide
us by our senses. Or we often look at
things from a mental standpoint. But
God said, “The SPIRIT of man is the
candle of the Lord,” which means that
He will guide us through our spirit.
Man is a spirit being. He has a
soul, and he lives in a physical body.
But he is a spirit being because he is
made in the likeness of God (Gen.
1:26), and Jesus said God is a Spirit

When the body is dead and in the
grave, man lives on. The Apostle
Paul, speaking of physical death,
said, “For I am in a strait betwixt
two, having a desire to depart, and to

be with Christ; which is far better”
(Phil. 1:23). To show that he was
talking about physical death, he then
said, “Nevertheless to abide in the
flesh is more needful for you” (v. 24).
He was saying, “When I depart, I am
going to be with the Lord.”
Who was Paul talking about when
he said “I”? He was not talking about
his body, for his body wasn’t going to
depart. We will have a new body one
day (see 1 Cor. 15:51-55), but we don’t
have it yet. We can see in Second
Corinthians chapter 4 whom Paul
was referring to: “ . . . though our out-
ward man perish, yet the inward man
is renewed day by day” (v. 16).
You see, there is an outward man
and an inward man. The outward man
is not the real you. The outward man
is only the “house” (or body) you live
in. The inward man is the real you.
Before we can understand how
God will guide us through our spirit,
we must first find out what our spirit
is. This inward man — or, as Peter
says, “the hidden man of the heart”
(1 Peter 3:4) — is the spirit of man.
When the Bible speaks of the heart,
it is speaking of the spirit, the
inward man, or the hidden man.
This is the real man. When Paul

says, “Therefore if any man be in
Christ, he is a new creature . . . ”
(2 Cor. 5:17), he is talking about the
inward man, the real man. You cer-
tainly didn’t get a new body when you
were born again, but the real you
became a new man in Christ.
Often our terms are so indistinct in
describing things that they are con-
fusing. It would be better to say
things as the Bible says them. For
instance, in First Thessalonians 5:23,
Paul prays for the church at Thessa-
lonica, saying, “. . . I pray God your
whole spirit and soul and body be pre-
served blameless unto the coming of
our Lord Jesus Christ.” Paul begins
with the inside and moves to the out-
side. He begins with the inward man
and moves to the outward man. Usu-
ally people misquote that verse and
put the body first instead of the spirit,
because they are more body-conscious
than spirit-conscious. We need to
reverse the order and become more
spirit-conscious.
Until we become more spirit-
conscious, we will not be able to
understand what God is saying to us
in our spirit, and spiritual things will
be indistinct to us. The more spirit-
conscious we become, the more real
the leading of the Lord will be to us.
We need to think of ourselves as
spirit beings, possessing souls, and
living in bodies. Our thinking has
been so wrong on this for years that
we have confused the whole issue.
Some of the leading Bible scholars
in the United States seem startled
when I ask, “What is the difference
between the spirit of man and the soul
of man?” They say, “Well, I have
always thought they were the same.”
Many times preachers use the terms
interchangeably, leaving the impres-
sion that the spirit and the soul are
the same. But they are not. “For the
word of God is quick, and powerful,
and sharper than any twoedged sword,
piercing even to the DIVIDING ASUN-
DER OF SOUL AND SPIRIT . . .”
(Heb. 4:12).
Paul said, “For if I pray in an
unknown tongue, my SPIRIT prayeth,
but my UNDERSTANDING is unfruit-
ful” (1 Cor. 14:14). Our understanding
is part of our soul. Paul said, “My
understanding is unfruitful because I
wasn’t praying out of my soul (intellect
or mind). That wasn’t my soul pray-

that is my spirit praying.”
I especially like the expression
used in Proverbs 20:27, which says,
“The spirit of man is the candle of the
Lord, searching all the inward parts
of the belly.” I also like what Jesus
said in John 7:37-39.
JOHN 7:37-39
37 In the last day, that great day of the
feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If
any man thirst, let him come unto me,
and drink.
38 He that believeth on me, as the scrip-
ture hath said, out of his belly shall flow
rivers of living water.
39 (But this spake he of the Spirit,
which they that believe on him should
receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet
given; because that Jesus was not yet
glorified.)
As a result of receiving the Holy
Spirit, out of the “belly” shall flow
rivers of living water. Another trans-
lation says, “Out of his innermost
being shall flow rivers of living
water.”
The Amplified translation of First
Corinthians 14:14 says, “For if I pray

the Holy Spirit within me] prays . . . .”
When you pray in tongues, it comes
out of your innermost being, your
spirit. Therefore, when we read, “The
spirit of man is the candle of the Lord,
searching all the inward parts of the
belly,” we see that the spirit of man is
our innermost being — the real man.
A person’s spirit — the innermost
man, the real man — receives eternal
life and is born again. But his intel-
lect and emotions, which compose the
soul, still have to be dealt with. They
are not instantly born again; they are
gradually renewed.
The Bible speaks about the renew-
ing of the mind in Romans chapter 12:
“And be not conformed to this world:
but be ye transformed by the renewing
of your mind . . .” (v. 2). This renewing
of the mind is a process. The epistle of
James was written to Christians. Yet
in the first chapter he said, “. . . Receive
with meekness the engrafted word,
which is able to save your souls” (v. 21).
Jesus said, “ . . . that which is born of
the Spirit is spirit” (John 3:6). It is our
spirit that is born again. Our soul can
be renewed or restored by the Word of
God.
With our spirit, we contact the
spiritual world; with our soul, we con-
tact the mental world; and with our
body, we contact the physical world.
We’ve talked about the spirit and
soul. Now what are we supposed to do
with the body? We see some answers
to that in the Book of Romans.
ROMANS 12:1
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by
the mercies of God, that ye present your
bodies a living sacrifice, holy, accept-
able unto God, which is your reasonable
service.
ROMANS 6:13
13 Neither yield ye your members as
instruments of unrighteousness unto
sin: . . .
The Bible tells us in these verses to
do something with our body. After we
are born again, our body is going to
want to keep on doing the same
things it always has done, but the
Bible says not to let it. The man on
the inside, the inward man, has
become a new man in Christ. We’re to
let this inward man be the dominant
one. We are to listen to him, because
it is through this man — through our
spirit — that God will guide us.
The inward man has a “voice”
which we call conscience, intuition,
inner guidance, or the inward
witness.
There has been much discussion as
to whether the conscience is a safe
guide. However, if your spirit has
become a new man in Christ, with the
life and nature of God in it, then your
conscience is a safe guide, because
your conscience is the voice of your
spirit. That is how God guides you.
Of course, a person who has never
been born again could not follow the
voice of his spirit. His spirit would be
unregenerate. His conscience would

permit him to do anything. But when
you have the nature and life of God in
you, your conscience won’t permit you
to do just anything.
If you are a Christian, the Holy
Spirit is living and abiding in your
spirit. He does not communicate

directly with your mind, because He is
not in your mind; He is in your spirit.
He communicates with you through
your spirit.
Jesus said, “. . . My Father will love
him, and we will come unto him, and
make our abode with him” (John
14:23). Paul said, “Know ye not that ye
are the temple of God, and that the
Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” (1 Cor.
3:16). Again, in his second letter to
the Corinthians, Paul said, “ . . . Ye
are the temple of the living God; as
God hath said, I will dwell in them,
and walk in them; and I will be their
God, and they shall be my people”
(2 Cor. 6:16). Therefore, if God is
dwelling in us, then that is where He
is going to speak to us.
It is your spirit, not the Holy Spirit,
that condemns you if you do wrong as
a Christian. The Holy Spirit does not
convict of sin. Jesus said the only sin
the Holy Spirit will convict the world
of is the sin of rejecting Jesus (John
16:8,9). It is your own spirit that
knows the very moment you have
done wrong.
Shortly after I was born again,
healed by the power of God, and back
in high school, a boy asked me a ques-
tion. I had been around some boys
who, although they didn’t actually
curse, used some words that were
almost that. Evidently I had picked
up one of those words. When the boy
asked me a question, I answered,
“Well, it’s none of your darn busi-
ness.”
The minute I said it, on the inside
of me I knew I had done wrong, and I
asked God’s forgiveness right then
and there. I apologized to the boy and
said, “I want you to forgive me for
talking like that.” He hadn’t thought
a thing about it, but I knew it was no
way for a Christian to talk. It was my
spirit, not the Holy Spirit, that con-
victed me, because my spirit has the
nature and life of God in it.
Feeling is the voice of the body.
Reason is the voice of the soul, or
mind. Conscience is the voice of the
spirit. We should always obey our con-
science. If we go by feelings, we are
going to be in trouble.
There are some very dear people
who have gotten off by following
voices other than the voice of the
inner man. There are many voices in
the world. We are not to accept any-
thing without examining it in the
light of God’s Word.
God does communicate with us
through our spirit, but it isn’t a mat-
ter of listening to voices. It isn’t a
matter of praying to hear something
audibly. If He speaks to us in an audi-
ble voice — fine. But if He doesn’t, we
have His Word, and we can always
walk in the light of it.

If we want to live a mature spiritual life,
enjoying the blessings and promises of
God, we must add to our faith. When we
add to our faith according to the Word of
God, we will never fall!

Throughout the Church today,
there seems to be a universal prob-
lem. Somewhere along the line, the
spiritual growth of most Christians
has become stunted. Sad to say, there
are countless numbers of believers
who are living weak, defeated, anemic
lives. Why is this? More importantly,
is there an answer to this problem? If
there is, we need to know it. I believe
the Apostle Peter gave us the solution
in his second letter to the Church.
2 PETER 1:1-11
1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apos-
tle of Jesus Christ, to them that have
obtained like precious faith with us

through the righteousness of God and
our Saviour Jesus Christ:
2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto
you through the knowledge of God, and
of Jesus our Lord,
3 According as his divine power hath
given unto us all things that pertain
unto life and godliness, through the
knowledge of him that hath called us to
glory and virtue:
4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding
great and precious promises: that by
these ye might be partakers of the
divine nature, having escaped the cor-
ruption that is in the world through
lust.
5 And beside this, giving all diligence,
add to your faith virtue; and to virtue
knowledge;
6 And to knowledge temperance; and
to temperance patience; and to patience
godliness;
7 And to godliness brotherly kindness;
and to brotherly kindness charity.
8 For if these things be in you, and
abound, they make you that ye shall nei-
ther be barren nor unfruitful in the
knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 But he that lacketh these things is
blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath
forgotten that he was purged from his
old sins.

10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give
diligence to make your calling and elec-
tion sure: for if ye do these things, ye
shall never fall:
11 For so an entrance shall be minis-
tered unto you abundantly into the ever-
lasting kingdom of our Lord and
Saviour Jesus Christ.
Let’s consider the background in
which Peter wrote this passage. It
was sometime around 66 A.D. Peter
knew he was facing martyrdom soon.
He says, “Knowing that shortly I must
put off this my tabernacle, even as our
Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.
Moreover I will endeavour that ye
may be able after my decease to have
these things always in remembrance”
(2 Peter 1:14-15).
Even though he knew death was
before him, Peter was not negative or
depressed. He was very positive and
joyful in writing to the Church.
However, he was also very concerned
about them. A lot of carnality had evi-
dently crept into the lives of the
believers. And the Church at that
time was under attack from all kinds
of crazy doctrines from false teachers.

Sounds a lot like the Church today,
doesn’t it?
The believers then were dwelling
on minor issues that didn’t amount to
a whole lot. They had digressed from
the main point of the Gospel of Jesus
Christ. Some were being led into
heresy. In this epistle, Peter is trying
to pull them back into line. He’s
exhorting them and reminding them
of what to do to stand strong in faith
and be fruitful.
Notice right from the start that
Peter is talking to believers. He
makes this clear by saying, “. . . to
them that have obtained like precious
faith with us . . .” (2 Peter 1:1). Every
believer has been given the measure
of faith (Rom. 12:3). The Bible tells us
many things that we are to do with
that measure of faith. We are to walk
by faith and not by sight (2 Cor. 5:7).
We’re to fight the good fight of faith
The blessings are great; you need them to live victoriously here
on earth. but now let’s grow up and add something else to them.
(1 Tim. 6:12). It also says that with-
out faith, it is impossible to please
God (Heb 11:6).
Too many people walk around
declaring, “I’m a faith person,” but
their lives are a mess. Yes, we are to
be people of faith, but that does not
mean we are to be people of foolish-
ness, presumption, or stupidity. There
have been many things done in the
name of faith that have nothing
whatsoever to do with faith. If we’d
all use a little more common sense,
mistakes that bring reproach to the
Gospel wouldn’t be made.
Peter goes on to say, “Grace and
peace be multiplied unto you through
the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our
Lord” (2 Peter 1:2). I like this verse
because it tells us that our God is the
God of abundance. He is El Shaddai.
He wants us to have more than just a
little bit of grace and peace, more than
just enough to barely get by. He wants
to give us multiplied grace and peace.
That means grace and peace in abun-
dance. To walk by faith in these last
days, we will need more grace and
t h e m a t u r e
peace than we have ever needed
before.
God does indeed give us everything
we need. The next couple of verses
say that we’ve been given all things
that pertain to life and godliness and
all the promises so that we can par-
ticipate in His divine nature (2 Peter
1:3,4). A lot of Christians miss it right
here.
Most Christians read verses 3 and 4
and then walk around with big smiles
on their faces, boldly and proudly con-
fessing, “I’m a partaker of His divine
nature. I’ve been given all things that
pertain to life and godliness.” All that
is true, but Peter doesn’t end there.
There’s more to it than that.
Peter goes on to write, “And beside
this . . .” (2 Peter 1:5). In other words,
he was saying, “That’s not all there
is; there’s something else besides
being a partaker of His divine nature.
There’s something else besides having
all the promises.” Peter was saying,
“Do everything else I just told you,
but make sure you don’t forget this
last thing.”
Peter got everyone excited by talk-
ing about being a partaker of God’s
divine nature, telling the people they
could have everything needed for life
and godliness. Then Peter delivered
the heavy stuff.
The bottom line of what he really
wanted to say to the Church is this:
You have to grow up spiritually. It’s
time to move on. The blessings are
great; you need them to live victori-
ously here on earth. But now let’s
grow up and add something else to
them. You need something else in
your life — it’s called Christian char-
acter.
Whenever anyone says, “Let’s
develop Christian character,” many
believers groan. They like the “goose
bump” part of Christianity — the
part that gets us all excited — but
when it comes to the nitty-gritty
parts of Christianity, they want to go
and hide. That’s foolish. It’s vital that
n e v e r f a l l
we mature spiritually. Then and only
then will we ever really enjoy the
blessings that God has for us.
That’s what these verses in Second
Peter chapter 1 are all about: growing
up spiritually and becoming God’s
person of strong Christian character.
Is that ever needed in the Church
today! As a whole, the Church is
sorely lacking in Christian character.
Believers just live however they want
to live, giving a bad name to
Christianity.
Spiritually mature Christians are
people of integrity — people of godli-
ness and virtue. If more believers
would grow up spiritually, the world
would see a big difference between
them and us, and wonder why. And
there should be a big difference
between them and us. That difference
is Christian character.
Besides being partakers of God’s
divine nature and enjoying all the
blessings and promises, there is more
we are to have in our Christian walk.
What exactly is it that Peter wants
us to add to our lives to make us spir-
itually mature?
In Second Peter 1:5-7, we’re told to
diligently add to our faith certain
things: virtue, knowledge, temper-
ance, patience, godliness, brotherly
kindness, and charity. According to
the rest of the passage, once we’ve
added these things to our faith, we
become fruitful in the knowledge of
our Lord Jesus Christ, and we see in
verse 10 that we will never fall —
never! That also means that without
these character qualities in our life,
we remain barren and unfruitful, and
it’s easier for us to fall.
No one who calls himself a
Christian would knowingly want to
be unfruitful. But, you see, there are
some steps we have to take to be
fruitful. It doesn’t just happen. It’s
not something that’s going to fall out
of the sky on us. We make it happen
by adding to our faith all these things
that Peter told us to add.

The Bible tells us that we are to be
perfect even as our Father in Heaven
is perfect (Matt. 5:48). We are to
strive for that perfection. The quality
of a man’s life is in direct proportion
to his commitment to excellence, or
perfection. Character is the most
important determinant of a person’s
overall success. Only strength of
character will endure and last
through thick and thin.
The way we excel — the way we
become more perfect, or mature — is

to add to our life these things that
Peter talked about. As we do, our life
will mature and bear fruit. It’s guar-
anteed. These qualities are supposed
to be in us. All of Jesus’ qualities are
in us. The big question is, how much
of Him are we letting out?
Look at the list again — virtue,
knowledge, temperance, patience,
godliness, brotherly kindness, and
charity. Wouldn’t you say that Jesus
had all these qualities fully opera-
tional in His life? We can have them
too. For as He is, so are we in this
world (1 John 4:17).
These qualities are supposed to
abound in us. The Amplified Bible
says that they should increasingly
abound (2 Peter 1:8)! That means
they keep growing and getting
stronger and stronger. A spiritually
mature person never stops growing.
We should always continue to mature
into the full stature of Christ.
We are Jesus’ representatives on
this earth. The Bible calls us ambas-
sadors (2 Cor. 5:20). Ambassadors in
the natural know how to act. They
don’t do anything to give the country
they’re representing a bad name. If
they do, they’re quickly removed from
their position.
We are ambassadors for the King
of kings — for the highest
Kingdom there is. We repre-
sent the best there is. We
are citizens of that
heavenly Kingdom.
It’s time we started acting like it,
don’t you think? It’s time for the
Church to grow up.
We can be the ambassadors Jesus
Christ has called us to be. As we add
to our faith, we will see our life —
and the lives of people around us —
changed more and more into His like-
ness. I like what John the Baptist
said: “I must decrease; He must
increase” (John 3:30). Our goal
should be that Jesus increase in us
daily — that more and more of Him
be seen in our life each day.
Do you want to grow up spiritually?
If you desire to be like Jesus, you do!
Determine now to become a mature
believer. Start adding to your faith
today. With all diligence, add to your
faith virtue, knowledge, temperance,
patience, godliness, brotherly kind-
ness, and charity. Then you will truly
enjoy the blessings and promises of
God!

I love the Lord with all my heart, but I have a problem
with worrying that I can’t get over. Every time I think I’m free
from worrying, the devil is there to throw something in my
face. I know that worrying is a sin, and I want to be free.
Can you please help me?

Worry is something we all have faced, and the
devil continually tries to tempt us in this area.
When we allow worry to dominate us, fear is right
there waiting to become a stronghold in our life.
I used to be a world-champion worrier. I worried
about everything. Fear and worry dominated my
life. Yes, I had heard ministers preach on worrying.
They admonished the congregation on the impor-
tance of winning the battle over worry, and I read-
ily agreed with them. However, having knowledge
of something and being able to live it out in my
own life were two different things.
I soon realized that if I didn’t take control of
worry and fear, they would take control of me — for
the rest of my life! Not only would I be miserable,
but the stress caused by worry and fear would even-
tually break me down emotionally and physically.
So I began to search the Word of God for myself,
looking for answers. You see, inspiration may come
and go. Feelings may come and go. My friends may
be there to encourage me one day and then not be
available another. But I’ve learned that the Word
of God is always there with the answers to all of my
needs. (That is one reason the Bible has become so
precious to me.)
So, I went to the Bible to find the solution to my
worrying problem. Philippians 4:6 says, “Do not fret
or have any anxiety about anything, but in every
circumstance and in everything, by prayer and
petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, con-
tinue to make your wants known to God”
(Amplified). Another scripture that was quickened
to my spirit was First Peter 5:7, which says, “Casting
the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your
worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on
Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares
about you watchfully” (Amplified). Psalm 55:22
says, “Cast your burden on the Lord [releasing the
weight of it] and He will sustain you; He will never

allow the [consistently] righteous to be moved
(made to slip, fall, or fail)” (Amplified).
As I began to read these scriptures, I realized
that although I loved the Lord with all my heart, I
had not wholly put my trust in Him and in His
promises. Imagine a parent saying to his child, “I
promise to take good care of you. I will feed you,
clothe you, and make sure that all of your needs
are met.” After that child has heard his parent
make that promise, it would be ridiculous for him
to continue to worry that he may starve to death,
that his clothes may wear out, or that his other
needs may not be met. No, when a parent says, “I
will do such and such,” the child doesn’t give it a
second thought. He believes that what his parent
has said shall indeed be done.
Suddenly, I realized how grieved my Heavenly
Father must have been by my continually worrying
about the very things He had promised me in His
Word. I had let fear dominate my life instead of
trusting my Heavenly Father whom I loved so much.
At that time, I made a quality decision that I was
no longer going to let the devil steal my confidence
in the Lord. I began to trust the One who promised
me in His Word that He would take care of me and
supply all of my needs.
I also made a quality decision to turn to the
Word of God when faced with a concern in life — to
find a promise of God that met my specific need. I
encourage you to do the same thing, and you will
find that you can live a life free of worry and fear.

 ‘I See It!’
In April 1933, at age fifteen,
Rev. Kenneth E. Hagin became bed-
fast. Doctors said he had to die.
Sixteen months later he was healed by
the power of God. This month, Rev.
Hagin continues an account of his
healing.

As I said it in that ambulance that
day, tears rolled down my face. I didn’t
understand all that I know now. I had
just one small gleam of light. It was
like a little light that might peep
through a crack in the door, but it was
a beginning point for me this first day
of January 1934 about 2 o’clock in the
afternoon.
I said, “Yes, I will see these build-
ings and this courthouse again. I will
come and stand in this courthouse
square, because Jesus said that what
you believe in your heart and say with
your mouth shall come to pass.” I had
committed myself.
January and February went by, and
I was still bedfast. March, April, May,
June, and July went by. The devil
might have said it wasn’t working, but
I held onto my confession and refused
to give up. I kept telling the Lord that
I was going to hold on, that I was
standing on His Word, and it had to
work!
Finally I saw what I had been
doing wrong: I wasn’t really believing
what God’s Word said. I was saying it
in my mind, but I wasn’t believing it
with my heart or acting upon it with
my heart.
I realized that for months I had
been hoping I would grow better grad-
ually. I was praying with hope, not
faith, and that won’t get the job done.
I realized that my faith was not yet
based on what God’s Word said, but
only on what I could see and feel. I
could feel that my heart wasn’t beat-
ing right yet. I often would look at my
legs and arms and start crying
because they were unchanged. I was
believing only what I could see with
my physical eyes.
Thus I came to the second week of
August 1934. That Tuesday, I prayed
through the early morning hours. At
the usual time my mother came in and
helped me with my bath. It was about
8:30 when she left the room. I contin-
ued to pray.
I had been struggling with Mark
11:24 for a long time, but I still wasn’t
any better. I told the Lord, “You said
when You were on earth that ‘what
things soever ye desire, when ye pray,
believe that ye receive them, and ye shall
have them.’ I desire to be healed, and I
believe. If You were to stand here in my
room and I could see You with my phys-
ical eyes and take hold of your hand,
and if You were to tell me my trouble is
that I’m not believing, I would have to
say this isn’t true. I am believing.”
Then a voice on the inside of me
spoke so clearly it seemed as if some-
one had spoken audibly: “Yes, you are
believing as far as you know, but the
last clause of that verse says, ‘and ye
shall have them.’ ”
I believed as much as I knew how
to believe, but I didn’t know enough. A
person cannot pray and get faith. The
Bible says that faith comes “ . . . by
hearing, and hearing by the Word of
God” (Rom. 10:17). We need knowl-
edge of the Word. When this light of
knowledge from the Word comes, faith
is automatically there.
In this moment, I saw exactly what
that verse in Mark 11:24 meant. Until
then I was going to wait till I was
actually healed. I was looking at my
body and testing my heart to see if I
had been healed. But I saw that the
verse says you have to believe when
you pray. The having comes after the
believing. I had been reversing it. I
was trying to have first and then
believe second. That is what most peo-
ple do.
“I see it. I see it!” I said with joy. “I
see what I’ve got to do, Lord. I’ve got
to believe that my heart is well while
I’m still lying here on this bed, and
while my heart is not beating right.
I’ve got to believe that my paralysis is
gone while I’m still lying here help-
less, flat on my back.
“I believe in my heart that You have
heard my prayer! I believe that my
heart is healed and that my paralysis
is gone! I believe in my heart that I
have received healing for my body!”
As I said this, the thought came to
me, “You’re a pretty thing. Just look at
you, claiming to be a Christian and
here you are lying. Don’t you know the
Bible says that all liars will have their
part in the lake that burneth with fire
and brimstone?”
