Awarddocuments

ProvisionalCertificates
Provisionalcertificatesareissuedpendingtheconferralofthedegree,particularlyforBachelorDegrees.Theyareusuallypresentedbyrecent
graduates,butbecausetherearesometimeslongdelaysinconferringdegrees,graduatesmayleaveIndiawithonlytheProvisionalCertificate.
Theymaysubsequentlyfinditdifficulttoobtaintheformaldegreecertificate.
ProvisionalCertificatesareusuallyissuedbythecollege,ratherthantheaffiliatinguniversity.Theymaynotmentiontheuniversitysname,butthe
transcriptsormarksheetsshouldidentifytheawardinginstitution.Ourassessmentisbasedontheawardinginstitution.
WeusuallyacceptProvisionalCertificatesasthebasisforassessment,butonlyiftheyclearlystatethatthegraduatehasmetalltherequirements
forthedegree.Similardocumentationissometimesissuedbeforealldegreerequirementshavebeenmet.

AwardCertificates
Foruniversitydegrees,thenameofthecollegemaybeincludedontheawardcertificateissuedbytheuniversity.Theformatofawardcertificates
isnotstandardisedinIndia.
Technicalandvocationalqualificationsassessedbytheguidelinesareissuedinthenameoftherelevantstateboardoftechnicaleducation.The
nameoftheindividualpolytechnicorinstituteissometimesontheawarddocument,oftenintheformoftheinstitutionsseal.Again,formatsvary
fromstatetostate.

Awardinginstitution
Transcriptsandmarksheetsmaysometimesbeissuedinthenamesofdifferentinstitutions.Newuniversitiesareoftencreatedfromexisting
collegesthosecollegesbecomepartofthenewinstitutionandchangetheiraffiliation.Ourassessmentisbasedontheinstitutionthatawardsthe
degree.Formoreinformation,seeTypesofinstitutionsinhighereducation,orconsultus.

Internships
Somecoursesincludeaninternshiporperiodofprofessionalpracticeafteranacademicprogram.
Degreesaregenerallynotawardeduntiltheinternshipiscompleted.However,someuniversitiesmayawardadegreeimmediatelyafterthe
academicprogramiscompleted.
Ourassessmentguidelinesrefertothedegreeawarded.Iftheinternshipisrelevanttotheassessmentforadmissionsorprofessionalpurposes,
youmayneedtoconfirmthatitwascompleted.

Transcripts

Studyperiods
Indiantranscriptsareusuallyintheformofstatementsofmarksormarksheetsissuedoncompletionofacademictermprograms,knownas
sessions.Sessionsmayrefertoyearsorsemesters,dependingontheinstitutionandfieldofstudy,aswellastosupplementaryexaminations.
BachelorDegreedocumentsoftenrefertoParts,e.g.PartIExaminations.Partsarenotnecessarilyyearsofstudy:
Someuniversitiesoffera3yearBachelorDegreewithexamsattheendofthe2ndand3rdyears.ThesearereferredtoasPartsIandII.
Someawarddocumentsmayalsoshow2or3Parts,oftenclassifieddifferently,wherePartI(orPartsIandII)refertothecompulsory
languagecomponentsandPartII(orpartIII)referstothemajorsubjectareas,sometimescalledoptionals(seebelow).
Partsinsomeprofessionalprogramsdonotequatetoyearse.g.the4.5yearBachelorofMedicineandBachelorofSurgery(MBBS)is
typicallydividedinto3unequalparts:1+1.5+2.

Classificationvariations
Somedegreesareusuallyawardedwithoutclassification,includingtheDoctorofPhilosophy,MasterofPhilosophyandotherresearchMaster
Degrees,MasterDegreesinsomeprofessionaldisciplines(especiallyalliedhealth),postgraduatemedicaldegreesandtheBachelorof
MedicineandBachelorofSurgery(MBBS).
Atsomeuniversities,studentswhorepeatasubject,whateverthereason,areclassifiedinthePassDivisionregardlessoftheirmarks.Whenthis
happenswemayassessonacasebycasebasisdependingonthemarksgainedandthesubjectsaffected,assessmentcouldbeatahigher
levelthansuggestedbytheguidelines.
Sometimesthefinalclassificationmaybeweightedorbasedonthefinalyear(orPart).Thiswillnormallybeexplainedonthetranscript.
Somedegreecertificatesincludeseveralclassifications:
Classifiedinto2partswherePartIreferstothecompulsorylanguagecomponentandPartIIreferstothemajorsubjectssometimescalled
optionalsubjects
Classifiedinto3parts,wherePartsIandIIrefertothecompulsorylanguagesandPartIIIreferstothemajorsubjectarea(s)sometimes

Failsandrepeatedsubjects
Statementsofmarks(ormarksheets)normallyincludetheresultsofallsubjectstaken,includingfails.Failedsubjectsmustnormallyberepeated:
whenthishappens,themarksheetincludesallthesubjectsintheacademicsession,includingsubjectspreviouslypassed.Previouslypassed
subjectsgenerallyhavethedateofpassing(e.g.November2004)ratherthanamarksomeinstitutionsuseexempted/creditedratherthanthe
date.

Unusualexpressions
Inmanycases,abbreviationsandacronymsareexplainedonthetranscript,sometimesonthebackofthepage.However,therearesome
expressionsthatarewidelyusedinIndia,butnotinAustralia.Forexample:

Gracemarksareadditionalmarksgrantedforaconcededpass
