SP: 2750 Group Theory

David Langham
Ms. Jones

The type of group interaction for functional which interprets each part of society
in terms of how it contributes to the stability of the whole society. Society is more than
the sum of its parts; rather, each part of society is functional for the stability of the whole
society. Independent is parts of society working together. How individuals tie into
groups making up the structure of society.
Each of which is organized to fill different needs and each of which has particular
consequences for the form and shape of society. The parts all depend on each other.
The group is the unit of analysis. Sociology is supposed to concentrate its efforts on
theorizing about the relationships between groups of folk. A group could be a crowd of
people in a movie theater, or the members of a family sitting around the dinner table,
what some call "minor groups". Organizations, factories, university systems, and even
societies are groups too. Structural practical theory allows for major foundations, such
as the economy, religion, polity, education and family, to be considered groups in the
best sense. In sociological analysis the dynamic of the groups in relation to other groups
and the whole system is under study.
Hypothetical scenario that depicts how this theory applies to a group i.e. the government, or state, provides education for the children of the family, which in
turn pays taxes on which the state depends to keep it running. The family is dependent
upon the school to help children grow up to have good jobs so that they can raise and
support their own families. In the process, the children become law-abiding, taxpaying
citizens, who in turn support the state. There are certain functional requirements that
must be satisfied if a society is to survive. Within any society there are functional
subsystems that meet those requirements. Each institution is similarly structured to

provide for the requirements of all the others. Individuals are socialized to wants and
needs that are socially appropriate. Balance of power between institutions is always
maintained, and if social needs are met, individual needs are also met. Therefore, each
part of a society is interdependent with all the others. Every individual, if properly
socialized, is an integrated functionary of the larger society. It is a very tidy picture of
cooperative social life.

1. Analysis on the four functions of the Functionalist Theory:

Intellectual uses the logical components for working within groups. More

cerebral .
Feeling: Getting emotional when something happened
Sensation: when I play soccer when someone not careful and kicked my leg
accidently I get angry.
Intuition: one thing that I have on my personality is forgiving so easily.
