Motivation Letter

In the Cement manufacturing industries in Pakistan, the engineers seldom have the knowledge and expertise in the field of
Material Science, as they tend to be focused exclusively on the other aspects of running a Plant like operation,
troubleshooting etc. Most of the time these industries, are need to consult with the experts from other countries to resolve
the issues caused by Vibration in equipments, wear and tear of grinding mill rollers and Jaw Crusher crushing plate etc.
This affect the overall productivity and increases budget. I have noticed such some challenges during my work at a cement
manufacturing industry for example: when I was Area In-charge at Crusher and Raw Mill area I observed that hard facing
didnt protect the Jaw Crusher crushing plate as much as it supposed to do. After consideration it concluded that electrode
material used for hard facing was not appropriate and due to miss-match material of electrodes and base plate they didnt
make proper bond with each other and hard facing didnt sustain for long period. Smooth running of plant is often
hindered by such faults. It is largely for this reason that I have decided to pursue a masters degree in Material Science, as
I feel that the comprehensive education in this field will instill in me the fresh ideas and skills that will allow me to
transcend the limitations of the Cement Industries in Pakistan, and also it will be beneficial to further my career and open
new doors of opportunities for me in international market.
I earned my bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro,
Sindh, Pakistan. During my four years at University, Various courses like Strength of Material, Thermodynamics, Heat
transfer, Engineering Material etc. provided me with basic theoretical concepts of Mechanical Engineering. I worked on a
thesis entitled Application of Geo Thermal Power Plant, in which I designed a lab scale model of power plant and
presented my study about geothermal energy resources and their exploration in Pakistan.
Due to financial concerns, I needed to work while attending university in order to be able to pay my tuition fee. This
required much of my attention and time and caused my grades to suffer, however, it improved my communication skills
and made me able to work both independently and as a part of group while meeting deadlines under pressure. The
organizational skills learned there ultimately prepared me for my later work at one of the Pakistans best cement
industries.
After graduating from the university, I began working at Thatta Cement Company. The practical exposure to big cement
manufacturing plant and the complexity involved in dealing with heavy machines and tackling with faults always made
me curious to go further.
I wanted to gain a significant practical exposure before getting enrolled in Masters program to supplement my grades that
suffered during graduation, and also to know the technical areas in which our cement industries are lacking knowledge
and expertise. Now after having almost 4 years of field experience, I feel ready to enroll in masters program.
I chose Kiel University because it has a dynamic, future-oriented, and an international profile.
The Knowledge of functional (or operational) materials, material development and analysis will
be very helpful in broadening my horizon of knowledge, and by studying in such courses, I will
acquire skills that I will need to achieve my goals and develop a successful career in this field.
Besides the numerous resources and conductive atmosphere, studying at this University would
give me the opportunity to further explore my talents by getting a chance to interact with faculty
and students from multicultural backgrounds.
After completing my masters degree, I plan to begin working at some multinational consulting company that deals with
designing of systems for cement industries, and it is my goal to eventually become a seasoned professional in this field.
Achieving this goal, however, requires that I study in a rigorous academic environment such as yours. Therefore, I
consider your masters program to be a very important step in my overall career path, and I am thus very grateful for your
consideration of my application.

Sincerely
Muhammad Arslan
