SYRIA
Reports indicate that Syria
has positioned A or SS-1B
scud missiles on the border
near Lebanon. It is believed
that two Hizbollah brigades
have been instructed in their
use. Earlier reports had
described these missiles al-
ready on Lebanon soil.
Israel has warned Damascus
via Washington that their
crossover into Lebanon in
violation of UN resolutions
would spark military action
on both sides of the Syrian-
Lebanese border.

IRAN
A warning published by
Kayhan, stated "If the US
strikes Iran with nuclear
weapons, there are elements
which will respond with nu-
clear blasts into U.S. main
cities.”
An announcement that “Iran
would join the world's nu-
clear club within a month,”
followed; this as 47 world
leaders gathered in Washing-
ton for President Barack
Obama's Nuclear Security
Summit.

MIDDLE EAST BRIEFS
IS TEHRAN indicating the
possibility of passing nuclear
devices to terrorists capable
of striking inside the United
States? This without direct
specification as to whether
these elements would be Ira-
nian or others. However, Te-
hran’s reported position came
during the Nuclear Security
Summit, of which Iran and
North Korea were excluded.
The question is whether Iran
has acquired nuclear devices
for that purpose, or has the
makings of primitive nuclear
devices or "dirty bombs?"
MOSCOW
Russian prime minister
Vladimir Putin has promised
that those responsible for two
explosions at two Moscow
subway stations recently,
killing at least 38 people and
many more injured, "will be
destroyed." Two blasts, one
near the Federal Security
Services building killed 25
people. The second blast
killed 12 near Gorky Park.

A SUEZ CANAL potential
threat that al Qaeda may be
planning attacks on shipping
in these waters. Ships exiting
the Suez Canal from the
south, and sea traffic bound
west for the Suez Canal from
the Indian Ocean and Persian
Gulf (and from Yemeni
shores) could be at risk.
GAZA STRIP
Gaza's Hamas rulers have
ordered residents to shut
smuggling tunnels along
the border with Egypt in-
definitely, cutting off the
economic lifeline for 1.5
million Palestinians.
Hamas security forces
warned people they would
be punished if they defied
the order. A Hamas secu-
rity official confirmed the
closure.
Hamas has long controlled
the tunnel industry. It is not
clear why the sudden order.
Israel and Egypt have
maintained a tough block-
ade of Gaza since Hamas
seized power nearly three
years ago, and the hun-
dreds of tunnels in the
Rafah area are the main
entry point for many basic
items, as well as weapons.
The Gaza-Egypt border sits
at the northeastern tip of
the Sinai desert.
