My hope for this summer at

St. Johns is that it will be all about
creating relationships, having fun
together, and getting to know each
other. That will continue to be part
of our summer. And I am thankful
to all those who are arranging for
groups to meet so I can meet with
each of you in small group
settings.
The building has
decided that it will
be a player in our
summer as well.
Please look for

this Messenger
regarding our
chiller and our elevator, among other items. Our leadership will be gathering info
and you should expect a special congregational meeting once we are clear about
options.

2015 St Johns UCC

I know there is some anxiety about fall and what September will look like with the bike race.

This is the plan so far:

On September 13th which would normally be
launch Sunday, we will have a work day. Come
to church ready to stay for lunch and then get
our church to shine for the visitors who will come
to Richmond for the races. We are still working
on finding out what the realities will be on
September 19th and 27th but we will probably
have options. Those who would like to be here at
St Johns welcoming visitors will be able to that,
to worship and to offer hospitality. Those who
want to avoid the downtown will have opportunity
to gather elsewhere or at a time when the race is
not a problem.

Rev. Harvey Joyner, Senior Pastor at First Congregational

UCC of Chesterfield presented the following Charge to the
St. Johns Congregation:
Fellow faith trekees, members & friends of St. Johns United Church of
Christ: With guidance of Gods Spirit, you have called Linda Higgins to be
your pastor, to lead you in the way of Jesus.
So, I charge you -Encourage her. Respect her decisions. Follow as she guides you. Pay for
her fairly and provide for her welfare as she works among you. Stand by
her in troubles and share her joys. Listen to the word she preaches, hear
as she teaches, welcome her pastoral care, and honor her calling, as she
seeks to follow the way of Jesus. Re-dedicate yourselves to the gospel
and give yourselves to God's renewing power. Place your whole selves in
service of others, that Gods reign might be evident in your lives
and in our world.
And may the Spirit within you shine in all you do. Amen!

The Messenger / JULY/AUGUST 2015

Hello All,
June marked the beginning of the new council term. We have four new Council members this year: Elisabeth Burnette, Johanna
Gilbert, Scott Siefert and Don Warren. We are very thankful that they felt called to serve on Council and share their gifts with St.
Johns. Together the new and continuing Council members are very excited about the opportunities that await us this upcoming year.
Before beginning our monthly report, I personally wish to thank Betsy Bighinatti and Karen-Marie Yust for their tireless leadership and
service to St. Johns. While no longer members of Council, both Betsy and Karen-Marie continue to serve St. Johns; Betsy on the
Finance Committee and the Endowment Board and Karen-Marie on the Constitution and Bylaws task force. As you have a chance
please extend a big thank you to each of these ladies.
The Council has elected to hold two council meetings each month. Our standard monthly meeting continues to be the second
Monday of each month starting at 6:30 PM. The second meeting, as needed, will be the forth Sunday of each month beginning 30
minutes after our service. In June we agreed to the following;
Support Erin Burnette in her call to ordained ministry by supporting her through the people in discernment process with the Potomac Association..
Perform an audit of St. Johns financial processes. We will engage Lane & Associates, P.C to conduct the audit. The objectives
of the audit are to document how St. Johns collects, spends and accounts for its cash flow and to provide recommendations on
operational efficiencies, cost savings and how to mitigate potential conflict of interests.
Renew the Parking Lot Rental contract with Metro Group. We will increase the rental fee to $45.00 per month per parking spot.
Please reach out to Bryan Anderegg if you have any questions.
Also in June, a Council Nominating Committee consisting of Elisabeth Burnette, Gary Beasley, Cheryl Goode and Vivian White was
formed to fill a council vacancy. If you feel called to serve on Council please reach out to anyone on the Nominating Committee.
Just as we did this past spring, during the next three weeks we will have ballots available in the Sunday program for anyone who
wishes to express their interest in being a member of council. The vacancy is for the second year of a two year term and will
conclude in May of 2016. We will have a Congregational Meeting in August to vote on the committees nomination to fill the council
vacancy.
Just like Council, there is a mixture of new and returning Committee Chairs. On page 4 of this newsletter you will find a list of the
committees and the chairs. There are many opportunities to share your gifts of talent and time. The Committees most in need of
our help are the Facilities, Mission and Outreach and Administration/ Personnel Committee. If you are interested in participating on
any of the committees please contact the Committee Chair or myself.
On July 11th the committee chairs and council members will begin what I hope will continue to be shared awareness and collaboration
on the many activities coming up for the remainder of this year and as we begin to outline our Church calendar for 2016.
I am closing with one final thought. As you all know, our new Sr.
Pastor was installed on June 20th. This is an exciting time for us
and a great time to reflect on if and/or how St. Johns will evolve.
What is your vision for St. Johns? What do you want St. Johns to
be known for? The answer to these questions and many others
may have a profound impact on how we move forward in the years
to come. Linda has asked you to express your vision each
Sunday via the notebooks set in each of the pews. Council also
wants to know your vision, your wishes, your concerns and we are
planning to reach out to you to find out what is on your mind and in
your heart.
Peace.

St. Johns UCC is a community of faith centered in Jesus

Christ, seeking guidance and direction through the Holy Spirit,
and demonstrating Gods Love to all people in words and
deeds. And our building needs us to live out our mission
statement as we seek to repair and improve our facilities.
Our Church Building is now ninety four plus years old. We have
a sixty seven year old chiller system as the work-horse of our
air conditioning, a twenty four year old elevator, and many
original parts to this beautiful church. These items have lived
out there life expectancy. As Facilities committee, Council, and
Trustees are called together to vet solutions and improvements
to meet the physical needs of our church building, we are
gathering best information and practices to improve and repair
our building. Those who feel called to share knowledge, time
and talents in gathering and discerning technical information
and building improvement sources, please contact me, Bryan
Anderegg, at banderegg2003@yahoo.com or let me know in
church of your interest please. The Facilities Committee will be
meeting Tuesday, July 14th at 6:30 pm to plan tasks for this
work.
Our plan is to review a minimum of three proposals for each of
these projects, seek best practices and information on code,
sustainability, and costs, and vet bids and solutions to our
building needs. We will keep all of us, the Congregation of St.
Johns UCC, in the loop so to speak of the information we
gather. Then we will call together the whole church in
congregational meeting to put into application our mission
statement. Where all will seek guidance and direction and
share our love for our churchs future. Thank you for your
presence, positive support, participation and prayers in the task
of caring for our facility and making it useful to our ministries.

Your Constitution &

Bylaws committee
continues its work to
update and revise St.
Johns constitution and
bylaws, taking into
consideration all input
received during our
feedback sessions in
March and April. Once
complete, we plan to
present both the Constitution and the Bylaws to the
congregation. This way, you will be able to view and vote on
both the Constitution, which will contain all the necessary
basic elements, and the Bylaws, which will include all the
supporting information, as complementary documents.
We hope to create a Constitution that will remain relevant
and stand the test of time, while the Bylaws may of necessity
change periodically, as St. Johns continues to evolve and
grow.
We will keep you informed of progress throughout the
summer.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Peace be with you,

Bryan Anderegg (Facilities Chair)

CARITAS at St. Johns
September 5 - 12
September 5th we will be welcoming our CARITAS guests for a
week (9/5 9/12). We will be housing and feeding them as we
did at the same time last year. Watch your bulletin for announcements on how you can help make our guests feel welcome.

UCC Standing in Solidarity

The UCC - through the Disaster Ministries Emergency USA
Fund - has set up a special account to collect donations to
assist the African-American churches which have been recently
attacked by arsonists. If you would like to contribute to this,
please make your donation payable to St. Johns and clearly
mark in the memo line that it is to go to Disaster Ministries
USA.

Please remember that Pastor Linda and the Church Council

use the Discretionary Fund to help our local neighbors in
need and the Koinonia Fund to help our members facing
emergencies. Both of these funds need your constant, and
regular donations to allow us to minister to others.

MENS MISSION GROUP

Breakfast - July 19
Our men met recently and are eager to organize into a
vibrant, and responsive fellowship and mission-minded
group. On Sunday, July 19, during the Congregational
Breakfast, the men will again gather separately with smiles,

Christian Formation Committee

We thank Arthur Dewey and Kristina Gilbert who have graciously agreed to co-chair the Christian Formation ministry in the
upcoming year. Please speak to one or both of them if you are interested in participating on the committee, have ideas about
classes or programs, or just want to talk about your own desires for Christian Formation. We also welcome Kathy Coulibaly to this
ministry. We are looking forward to an exciting year!

Congratulations New members!

Congratulations to our new members
Cammie Allen,
Ashley Quick,
Josh Lyle,
and Bryan Etter.
What a meaningful and uplifting service of
confirmation they led on June 7th. Please
continue to support these young people as
they seek to contribute their time and talents
to Gods realm.

Reaching out to our Neighbors at Greenfield Through Bible Study

St. Johns is reaching out to our neighbors offering a bible study for
all residents as well as our own St. Johns members at the Greenfield Assisted Living home, on Allen and Grace Streets one block
from the church. We will meet from 1:30 -2:30 PM on the 3rd
Wednesday of each month (upcoming dates are July 15 and August
19). Currently, Steve Plymale is leading a Bible study on the Lords
Prayer. Just come as you are for this special opportunity to study
with others in our neighborhood. When you walk in just ask the receptionist at the front desk where to find us!

BIBLE STUDY
Summer Programing for Children
During the months of July and August our children continue to
engage bible stories in fresh ways using a variety
of hands-on activities.
In June, using Legos and Duplo blocks children created their
own version of the creation story. Young children are invited
to participate in our summer Sunday morning program
during the 10 am worship time
(children leave worship after the childrens message).

Central Atlantic Conference Report from Scott Siefert and

Cheryl Goode
It was a pleasure and an honor for us to represent St Johns UCC at the Central Atlantic

Conference. We had a full schedule of events including inspirational worship (we ending our
conference with a powerful worship service lead by Rev. Cameron Thimble where she challenged us to be as passionate about our
faith as we are about other things like for instance our sports teams or possibly even our donut choice), procedural meetings (our
conference voted in favor of presenting legislation authorizing physician assistance in dying. This subject predictably had strong
opinions during the discussion on both sides of this issue), and thought provoking seminars (Dismantling the New Jim Crow Mr.
Frank Bolden shared many disheartening statistics and facts entailing how African-Americans are disproportionately incarcerated.
Many resources were made available to further learn about what is happening and what can be done. Recapturing our Stories:
Responding to Stereotypes in New and Traditional Media...Cheryl Lanza, a public policy director of the UCCs media Justice Ministry
gave us an opportunity to reflect on the positive and negative ways that we have been depicted in media in regards to our race, age,
sex, and in any other defining way).
We can report that the state of the conference is strong. We are growing. We added four churches and are doing excellent work
through our Churchs Wider Mission.

Ladies Night Out

VCU Welcome August 15

Ladies, lets get together for dinner on Friday, August 7, 6:00 pm

Location TBD. Contact Adrianne Dery, 262 7072, if youd like to
come so we can make reservations.

On August 15th excited students and anxious parents will

be flooding our neighborhood on move-in day for Virginia
Commonwealth University. Lets extend to them our
extravagant hand of welcome providing cool beverages
and hot dogs, giving them a space to park and rest, and
maybe even carrying a load or two.

Getting to Know You

Throughout July and August, St Johns congregation will be given
an opportunity to gather together in small groups for a time of
fellowship. The purpose of these informal gatherings will be to
allow everyone a chance to get to know Reverend Linda Higgins
better and for her to get to know you!
Some people have
agreed to host
these gatherings
at their home and
others will hold
them at church.
The gatherings are grouped loosely by geographic area. The
Congregational Life & Care Committee (Kim Vann, Chair) is
coordinating this effort and if you were unintentionally not contacted
by a host or if you arent able to attend a specific gathering, please
contact the church office by July 26th and speak to Julia Eliades
(358-9291, ext 12).

Selfies Wanted at St. Johns

Everyone, come and have your picture taken in the St. Johns
photo booth! So,
not really a cell
phone selfie but a
real photograph
taken by our
congregational life
and care ministry
who are putting
together an
informal picture
directory.
Pictures are a great way to get to know each other. The photo
booth has been set up in the childrens library area in the hallway
next to the Parlor.

Watch for more information about how you might

participate. For now, please but the date on your
calendar and plan to come and offer welcome to the
neighborhood!

Bowling League

If you are interested in bowling, come on out to Hanover

Lanes on July 15th at 6:30 pm. Josh Lyle is our
organizer and the bowling will begin at 7:00 pm. If you
have any questions, please call the Church Office or see
Josh. It will be a fun time and we may want to make it a
regular occurrence!!!

Web Site Development

You may have noticed that our website is under
construction this summer. The congregational life and
care ministry is working with Arn Mutia to update our web
page. If you are interested in helping with this project,
speak to Arn on Sunday mornings or contact Julia
Eliades, 358-9291, ext 12.

We will be taking pictures on July 12, 19, 26, and August 2nd
starting at 9:30 am and immediately following the worship
service.
Watch for more information about signing up or just come ready to
smile and say cheese! Everyone is invited to have your picture
taken new visitors to our church or long time members.

Reiki at St Johns
Reiki is a form of healing prayer that supports the
energy system in your body. Energy flows through all
living things. When your energy is blocked or low you
are more susceptible to illness. When your energy is
strong you can more easily deal with stress and are
less likely to get sick. Reiki is a technique that increases a
persons supply of life energy.
I, Pastor Linda, have been a Reiki master for 10 years.
This is a gift I want to share with you the members of St Johns
so I am offering a Reiki I and a Reiki II class for those who would like to learn this
summer. I will teach Reiki I on July 25th from 10am to 7pm and Reiki II on August 29
also from 10-7. Each of these classes if you were to pay for them would cost $150
plus the cost of the manual. To register at St Johns you will need to pay for your
manual which costs $25 with shipping from the international Reiki Center. I ask that
other than the purchase of the manual in your offering to the church you acknowledge
the gift the church is giving you.
The sign-up sheet and an envelope for your payment is on the bulletin board outside
the Pastors office. You must register by July 19th so I have time to get the manuals. If
you want more information on Reiki there are brochures outside my office.

ready for our celebration.
And to all who agreed to participate sing and lead us in celebration my
humble thanks.
