Executive Summary
Hybrid Welding Processes were adopted in 2013 Edition
Hybrid Plasma-GMAW (SuperMIG) process may be used for any Sec. I construction
Hybrid Plasma-GMAW, Hybrid Laser-GMAW were adopted in Sec. IX
Hybrid laser-GMAW is limited to the combination of automatic LBW and automatic
GMAW
Short-circuiting arc transfer mode shall not be used for Hybrid Laser-GMAW

Executive Summary
Hybrid Welding Processes were adopted in 2013 Edition
Hybrid plasma-GMAW is limited to the combination of PAW and GMAW
Hybrid plasma-GMAW is limited to machine welding
Hybrid plasma-GMAW can be applied for groove/fillet welding and HFO/CRO

Lloyds Register services to the energy industry

Executive Summary
Combination of Laser and arc welding leads;
The ability of the laser welding process to bridge root openings is low due to its small
focus diameter but, on the other hand, high welding speeds can be obtained
The arc welding process has a much lower energy density, but causes a bigger focal
spot on the surface and is characterized by a slower processing speed
By combining the two, hybrid laser welding provides a unique opportunity for thicker
welds with less filler metal or higher travel speeds than typical welding, depending on
the material thickness

Lloyds Register services to the energy industry

Executive Summary
Advantages of Hybrid Laser-GMAW over Laser Welding
Higher process stability
Higher bridgeability
Deeper penetration
Lower capital investment costs because of savings in laser energy
Greater ductility.

Lloyds Register services to the energy industry

Executive Summary
Advantages of Hybrid Laser-GMAW over GMAW
Higher welding speeds
Deeper penetration at higher welding speeds
Lower thermal input
Higher tensile strength
Narrower weld joints.

Ni + Mn limitation for Grade 91 filler metal (e.g., AWS B9, EN CrMo91, etc.)

Sec. I

PW-5.4 When Grade 91 filler metal is used to make pressure-retaining

welds in P-No. 15E Gr. 1 materials, the nickel plus manganese (Ni + Mn)
content of the filler metal shall not exceed 1.2%.

Sec. III
Sec. IV
Sec. VIII
Sec. X
Sec. XII

No limitation for Ni + Mn content of filler metal to make welding in P-15E

material

Executive Summary
Maximum holding temperature in PWHT for P-15E

Lower critical transformation temperature for Grade 91 filler metal is affected by alloy
content, especially Ni + Mn
Limiting the Ni + Mn content of the Grade 91 filler metal to 1.2% will prevent the lower
critical transformation temperature of the weld metal from falling below the upper
temperature limit of the PWHT range, and will thus allow for the setting of a higher
maximum temperature limit for PWHT.
The maximum holding temperature has been set to avoid heat treatment in the
intercritical zone.

Lloyds Register services to the energy industry

Executive Summary
Maximum holding temperature in PWHT for P-15E

Sec. I

Max. holding temperature : 785 (Table PW-39-5)

If Ni + Mn < 1.0%, the maximum PWHT temperature is 800C

Sec. III

Max. holding temperature : 775

Sec.
VIII
Div.1/2

Max. holding temperature : 775

If Ni + Mn < 1.50% but 1.0%, the maximum PWHT temperature is 790C
If Ni + Mn < 1.0%, the maximum PWHT temperature is 800C
