Lancôme

Lancôme Paris is a luxury beauty brand. Owned by L'Oréal since 1964,

Lancôme is part of the Luxury Products division, which offers skin care,
fragrances, and makeup at higher-end price points.

Founded in 1935 by Armand Petitjean in France, Lancôme will celebrate its

75th anniversary in 2010. Petitjean’s motive was ambitious yet simple: to
create a beauty brand that would deliver French elegance around the world.
The name “Lancôme” was inspired by the ruins of a castle, Le Château de
Lancosme, while the wild roses in the area inspired the company’s symbol
of the single golden rose.

The brand is represented by several of the world’s top actresses including

several Academy Award winners and nominees along with global
supermodels, makeup artists and renowned perfumers. Emerging fashion
designers have collaborated with the brand, including design duo Proenza
Schouler, who created a dress inspired by Lancôme's Hypnôse fragrance.
Lancôme products have shown up on the red carpet, too, as when Angelina
Jolie wore Juicy Tubes lip gloss and Oscillation Mascara to the 2009 Oscars.

History

Lancôme launched its first five fragrances in 1935 at the World's Fair in
Brussels - Tendre Nuit, Bocages, Conquete, Kypre and Tropiques. Lancome
fragrances are made in association with perfumers Alain Astori, Annick
Menardo, Daniela Roche-Andrier, Christian Biecher, Jacques Cavallier,
Calice Becker, Pauline Zanoni, Maurice Roucel, Thierry Wasser, Christine
Nagel, Armand Petitjean, Gerard Goupy, Olivier Cresp, Harry Fremont,
Alberto Morillas, Dominique Ropion, Olivier Polge, Francis Kurkdjian,
Robert Gonnon, Nathalie Lorson, Sophia Grojsman and Alienor Massenet.

Soon after, Lancôme expanded its business into makeup and skincare
products. One noteworthy product was Nutrix launched in 1936.

Current Lineup

In 2005 Lancôme announced that Canadian-born model Daria Werbowy

would be joining the brand. Since being signed, Daria has appeared in a
number of Lancôme ads, including the latest, Ôscillation Powerfoundation.
Also modeling for the brand is supermodel Arlenis Sosa. Discovered in her
native Dominican Republic, Arlenis' quick ascent to supermodel status was
cemented with this coveted beauty contract. (Arlenis has also appeared in
advertising for the Gap and for David Yurman.) New Lancôme advertising
featuring Arlenis will break in Spring 2010.

Spanish actress and model Inés Sastre has represented Lancôme as a global
spokesmodel since 1996, appearing in dozens of Lancôme advertisements
over the years. A native of Spain, supermodel Inès Sastre was born in
Valladolid. She began her modeling and acting career at the age of 12 when
she was selected for a local TV commercial. In 1989, she won the famous
Elite “Look of the Year” supermodel contest. Three years later, she moved
to Paris to begin her studies at La Sorbonne University from which she
graduated with a degree in Modern Literature. As a model, Inès has graced
the covers of international magazines, including Elle and Marie Claire, and
has worked with top photographers including Bruce Weber, Michel Comte
and Richard Avedon. She was the “face” of the 1992 Olympic Games in
Barcelona, Spain.

On June 11, 2007, Kate Winslet was unveiled as the spokesmodel for
Lancôme. Her first assignment was the relaunch of the Lancôme fragrance
Trésor (formerly promoted by Inés Sastre) in late 2007.

On January 2, 2007, actress Anne Hathaway was announced as the newest

brand ambassador, set to promote the new fragrance, Magnifique, released in
August 2008.

Late in 2009, Lancôme announced that Oscar winner and global superstar
Julia Roberts will represent the company. Lancôme advertising featuring
Julia Roberts will appear in Spring 2010.
