Pipex px MANHOLES, CHAMBERS AND TANKS

Pipex px Equipment Chambers

(Prefabricated Hydro Brake chamber, connected to outlet pipe system onsite)

Project

The Liquidified Natural Gas (LNG) terminal on the Isle of Grain

stores large amounts of waste gas in a cooled, liquidified form
for use by consumers as and when they require. The purpose
of storing this resource as a liquid matter is to conserve
space; LNG uses up 600 times less space than natural gas and
so more can be stored in this form, enabling up to 12% of the
UKs gas demand to be supplied. The functioning of this
economic terminal requires a drainage system for storm over
flow and so a section of the LNG consists of a 3000M
drainage lagoon to control any such excess water. Within this
Lagoon is an outlet pipe containing a number of manholes and
flow control products, including the above pictured Pipex
Hydro1Brake chamber, installed for the purpose of
maintaining a steady flow of water into the lagoons oil
separator.

Scope of Work

Pipex px supplied, fabricated and factory

tested 1 No. High Density Polyethylene
(HDPE) Hydro1Brake flow control chamber,
for the purpose of maintaining a steady flow of
storm water entering a nearby oil separator.
This chamber was 2.1M x 1.53M deep, with a
750 mm x 750mm square access point.
The energy efficient Hydro1Brake Flow
Control Chamber has no moving parts and
requires no external power to operate, instead
it harnesses the natural energy inherent in the
flow field. This economically efficient product
uses the force of upstream water to create an
air filled vortex, which raises internal pressure
and so reduces the amount of water that can
enter the chamber, resulting in a more
controlled exit flow.

Specialist Design

PXPDCCH109 CAB

This project involved making the Hydro1

Brake shallower than normal; ideally a
Hydro1Brake would be 3M in depth,
however due to onsite space restrictions,
this was not feasible and so the chamber
was fabricated to just 1.53M deep. As a
result there was an additional
requirement to create a reinforced lid in
order to prevent the chamber flooding
from above ground pressure.
This project also involved matching the
inlet and outlet openings to the size of
the clients existing pipe system to en
sure a secure, fully sealed connection.

Project
Advantages

Once installed the Hydro1Brake requires little or

no maintenance as the outlet openings are 316
times larger than conventional chambers and so it
is unlikely to get blocked.
This product is made from corrosion resistant
HDPE which is extremely durable with a design
life expectancy of 60+ years.
HDPE is also lightweight which aids transportation
and installation schedules.
The unique head discharge characteristics reduce
storage volume requirements, thus lowering pro1
ject costs.
The Hydro1Brake is pre1fabricated offsite to
enable a fast1track installation.
