iii) Any missing data may be suitably assumed.

Maximum: 100 Marks

1. Give the composition of 35 Mn 2 Mo 45 steel

02

2. Derive the relationship between leg and throat of the weld.

02

3. If two shafts A and B are made of same material and the diameter of the shaft A is twice that of
shaft B. Then, what is the power transmitted by the shaft A?
02
4. Hot riveting is recommended for fluid tight joints. Why?

02

5. Suggest a suitable coupling in the following cases

(a) Shafts having parallel axes with small distance apart
(b) Shafts having intersecting axes.

02

6. Differentiate between localized and normal stresses.

7. The frame of a machine member with rectangular section as shown in figure is subjected to a
load P. Determine the value of P such thatthe maximum stress in the frame is not to exceed
120 M Pa. All dimensions given in the figure are in mm.

8. A shaft supported on anti-friction bearings carries a pulley at its center. The bending moment
varies from -170 N-m to 510 N-m and the torsional moment varies from 55 N-m to 165 N-m.
The frequency of variation of the loads is the same as the speed of the shaft speed. The shaft is
made of steel having an ultimate tensile strength of 540 MPa and yield strength 400 MPa.
Determine the required diameter for an indefinite life and 50% reliability. The stress
concentration factor for the key way in bending and torsion may be taken as 1.6 and 1.3
respectively. The factor of safety is 1.5. Take size factor as 0.85 and surface finish factor as
0.88.

9. A horizontal shaft is supported by two bearings 1.5 m apart. A gear of 20 o involute profile and
200 mm pcd is located 400 mm to the left of the right bearing and is driven by a pinion mounted
directly behind it. A 600 mm diameter pulley is keyed to the shaft 600 mm to the right of the
left bearing and drives a horizontal belt directly behind it. The ratio of belt tensions is 3:1. The
tangential force on the driven gear acts downwards. Determine the diameter of the shaft if it
transmits 80 kW at 400 rpm. The weight of the pulley is 800 N. Take fatigue and shock factors
for bending and torsion as 1.5 & 1.25 respectively. Assume the allowable shear stress of the
shaft material as 40MPa.

10. Design a pin and bush type flexible coupling to transmit 25 kW at 500 rpm. Assume C40 steel
as the material for the shaft, key and pins. Take allowable shear stress for the hub and flange as
15 N/mm2. Assume a factor of safety as 2

11. Deign a double riveted, double strap unequal width butt joint for a pressure vessel. The internal
diameter of the pressure vessel is 1.2 m and is subjected 2.4 N/mm2.The pitch of the rivets in the
outer row is double the pitch of the rivets in the inner row. Assume chain riveting and the rivets
in double shear are 1.875 times stronger than the rivets in single shear. The allowable stresses in
shear, tension and crushing are 60 MPa, 75 MPa and 125 MPa respectively. Show the
arrangement of the rivets with at least three rivets in each row.

12. A square bar is welded to another plate by fillet weld as shown in figure to sustain a load of
20 kN. Determine the size of the weld by taking normal stress in weld as 120 MPa.

mean diameter of the coil and no of coils required, assuming plain ends. Take G = 80 GPa and
k = 1.25.

specifications:
Cylinder bore = 100 mm,
Stroke = 120 mm,
Maximum gas pressure = 5 N/mm2,
Brake mean effective pressure = 0.65 N/mm2,
Fuel consumption = 0.227 kg/kW/hr,
