Product description Sandwich panels with mineral wool core

Product range
Ruukki SP2D W, SPB W and SPC W sandwich panels
are composed of two steel sheet facings and a structural
insulation core of hard mineral wool featured with
excellent fire resistance properties. Panel facings are
made of metal sheet galvanised on both sides. Facing
parameters comply with the parameters of S280GD +
Z 275 or S320GD + Z 275 steel in accordance with to
PN-EN 10326:2006. Standard versions of the sheets are
polyester coated. For corrosive enviroments as well as
for the use in food industries etc., we offer sheets with
PVDF or PVC coatings.

Film is added on both sides to protect panels against
mechanical damage during loading, unloading, storage
and installation. The core is made of hard mineral wool.
The mineral wools nominal density is of 120 kg/m3 and
design thermal conductivity ratio ldesign is of
0.045 W/mK in temp. 10C.

Features
Ruukki panels with mineral wool cores are featured with
an excellent fire resistance (45 to 120 minutes) and good
mechanical properties. Mineral wool with appropriate
fibre arrangement and reliable polyurethane adhesive
joint between the core and steel facings allow for 6 metre
spans between supports.

In the sandwich panels the disadvantageous settling

of mineral wool has been avoided and its physical and
chemical properties are preserved. Hydrophobic fibres
are resistant to moisture and biological corrosion.

Thermal bridges and vapour condensation resulting in
serious deterioration of the thermal transmittance coefficient and posing threat of corrosion were also eliminated. These may appear in walls fixed at the building site
with the use of traditional liner trays, in which two layers
of mineral wool were not applied.

*** thermal transmittance value U was calculated for the ldesign value of 0.045 W/mK and includes impact of linear thermal bridge on panel joint
**** applies only to light-coloured panels. External panel facings in dark colors (from standard colours range RAL 3013 and 5005), due to
considerable thermal loads, higher than that of lighter colors, can be deformed. In order to minimize this phenomenon, it is advisable
to apply only Ruukki SPC W panels with lengths resulting from calculations that take into consideration thermal loads.

Product description Sandwich panels with mineral wool core

Areas of application
Ruukki mineral wool core panels are used for claddings
of industrial, manufacturing and sports facilities, wholesale/retail outlets, exhibition halls, offices, service outlets,
hangars, garages, workshops, administrative and public
utility buildings as well as storage facilities, including cold
stores, frozen warehouses, etc.

The panel production technology used by the manufacturer allows for selecting appropriate organic coating
for a specific application. For detailed information on
thermal, waterproofing, strength, acoustic, fire safety
and anti-corrosive properties, see below in this catalogue.

The type and panel arrangements are determined by
designers depending on intended use of the facility,
operating conditions, possible impact of internal environment and weather conditions.

Thermal performance
The mineral wool forming the core of Ruukki SP2D W,
SPB W and SPC W panels is featured with good thermal
insulating power. Their computational thermal conductivity coefficient (ldesign) is of 0.045 W/mK. U thermal
transmittance coefficient values for middle panel layers
are listed in Table 1.

The range of possible applications of Ruukki SP2D W,

SPB W and SPC W sandwich panels was determined as
a result of thermal and humidity calculations considering
thermal bridge impact and basing on technical requirements set out in the Order of the Minister of Infrastructure on technical requirements to be met by buildings
and their locations (Journal of Law No. 75/2002, Item
690).
Thermal insulating power of Ruukki SP2D100W,
SP2D120W, SPB100W, SPB120W and SPB140W
wall panels makes it possible for them to be used in
external solid walls and walls with windows/door in
public utilities and industrial facilities heated to
ti > 16C.
Thermal insulating power of Ruukki SPB80W wall
panels makes it possible for them to be used in external solid walls and walls with windows/door in public
utilities and industrial facilities heated to
8C < ti < 16C.
Thermal insulating power of Ruukki SPC190/150W
roof panels makes it possible for them to be used as
roof coverings over rooms of public utilities and industrial facilities heated to ti > 16C.
Thermal insulating power of Ruukki SPC140/100W
roof panels qualify them for use as roof coverings over
rooms of public utility and industrial facilities heated to
between 8C < ti < 16C.

Considering high thermal expansion co-efficient of steel

sheet, it is recommended to use light-coloured wall and
roof panels (it referrs to external facades).
Dark-coloured external facing, due to far higher thermal
load, as compared with light-coloured ones, may subject
to deformation. In order to minimise it, the manufacturer
recommends:
in case of wall panels to use single-span systems,
in case of roof panels to limit maximum length,
having considered thermal loads,
in case of doubt to consult manufacturers R&D
department.

Ruukki panels are designed for use in low and mid-range
temperatures. Constant temperature of panel surface
should not exceed 60C (or 90C for short intervals).

Given load values refer to panels mounted with minimum 3 fasteners on panel width.
If panels are mounted with 2 fasteners on width, values given in Table 5 should be taken as admissible loads (like for panels supported
linearly on entire width), reduced by 30% for rigidity and 45% for load capacity.
It should be acknowledged that strength operating on 1 fastener should not exceed 1.0 kN for fasteners with steel washer
and 0.9 kN for fasteners with aluminum washer.

Corrosivity categories and examples of typical

environments in accordance with EN ISO 12944-2

Corrosivity category C1:
Interior heated building with clean atmospheres,
e.g. offices, shops, schools, hotels.

Corrosion resistance
Owing to the application of properly selected organic
coatings, constituting the final protective layer for (external and/or internal) Ruukki sandwich panel facings
or non-standard facings (external and/or internal)
depending on particular demands various corrosion
resistance can be achieved.

Corrosivity category C2:

Exterior atmospheres with low level of pollution, mostly
rural areas.

Studies carried out by Durability and Corrosion Protection Department of the ITB (Building Research Institute),
which aimed at assessment of corrosion resistance of
the coatings and facings listed below showed that:

Interior unheated buildings where condensations may

occur, e.g. depots, sports halls.

Corrosivity category C3:
Exterior urban and industrial atmospheres, moderate
sulfur dioxide pollution, coastal areas with low salinity.

Ruukki sandwich panels with standard polyester coatings (25 m thick) are suitable for use in C1 to C3
environments according to PN-EN ISO 12944-2:2001,
Ruukki non-standard sandwich panels with PVDF
coatings (25 m thick) are suitable for use in C1 to C3
environments according to PN-EN ISO 12944-2:2001,
Ruukki non-standard sandwich panels with PVC coatings (120 m thick) are suitable for use in C1 to C3
environments according to PN-EN ISO 12944-2:2001.

Interior production rooms with high humidity and some

air pollution, e.g. food-processing plants, laundries, breweries, dairies.

Product description Sandwich panels with mineral wool core

Acoustic performance
Ruukki mineral wool core wall panels have the following
minimum acoustic insulation coefficients which are featured with:
RW 32 dB, RA1 30 dB, RA2 28 dB.

for retail outlets pavilions, exhibition and other facilities in accordance with requirements stated in
PN-B-02151-3:1999 or if parameters are set individually, depending on the particular solution applied in a
building (location, glazing, rooms adaptation),
to erect buildings with no specified acoustic requirements.

Detailed data concerning acoustic parameters are given

in Table 20. The ratios set by the ITB according to the
PN-EN-ISO 717-1:1999 standard show that from acoustic point of view, Ruukki SP2D W, Ruukki SPB W
and Ruukki SPC W panels are suited for use:

Ruukki SPC W roof panels to be joined longitudinally

may be delivered with an internal facing notched along
its edges. For adequate joint, the notched facing along
with the mineral wool and the polyurethane adhesive,
must be removed during panel installation. The coreless area is 250 mm in length. Two types of panels can
be distinguished in terms of facing notches:

Fasteners for panel assembly

All Ruukki panels are fastened to the base structure by
means of self-tapping fasteners whose use ensures
fast assembly, secure fastening and attractive appearance of external and internal wall surfaces. Self-tapping
fasteners are used for fixing sandwich panels on steel
structures with wall thicknesses of up to 12 mm. The
best fasteners for particular panel types are presented in
Table 21.

The fasteners are made of hardened carbon steel with

an anti-corrosive protective coat. All fasteners have
washers with vulcanised EPDM, which allows for long
operation while keeping the sealant flexible. Fasteners
and washers for special applications are available in
stainless steel. Other fasteners may be used for fixing
panels on other types of bases:
for fixing on wood and steel structures with walls of
over 12 mm in thickness, we recommend self-tapping
fasteners with proper thread profiles,
for fixing on concrete elements, we recommend a
special self-anchoring stud which requires no additional elements to expand in concrete; a diameter
of initial opening both in a panel and in a concrete
element corresponds to the nominal diameter of a
stud thus, all that is needed for fixing is a hammer
and a hammer drill.

The advantages of this fastening system are listed below:

drilling and fixing are performed within a single task
this significantly reduces the time required for
proper fixing,
there is no need to purchase additional tools such as
drills,
fasteners can be fixed in place with the use of single
tool a screw gun,
drilling is optimal as each fastener comes with a
cutting piece to be used in drilling only a single hole
during fastening,
tight fastening is obtained thanks to an additional
support thread under fasteners head and a washer
with EPDM vulcanised layer,
very high and equivalent values of support extraction
forces are achieved by extremely precise selection of
opening diameter, dimensions and thread profile.

We offer galvanized fasteners and lacquered white

fasteners. On individual demand it is possible to provide
fasteners with heads and washers which are powderpainted by electrostatic method into a color of external
facing of a sandwich panel.

General panel assembly guidelines

It is recommended to conduct assembly according to
detailed instructions included in the data sheet called
Assembly instruction for sandwich panels.

Before assembly, check structure for compliance with
design specifications and construction accuracy.
Prior to assembly, remove protective film from internal panel facings. Film on external facings should
be removed soon after assembly however, not later,
than 2 months after panel purchase (Fig. 1). Peel the
protective film off longitudinal edges of Ruukki panels
(applies to metallic varnish, e.g. Silver Metalic) prior
to commencement installation. Ruukki SPB W wall
panels are covered with blue film that comes on the
internal side of the building structure.

l

Only special screw guns may be used for fixing fasteners. (Fig. 3)
Do not install panels in wind exceeding 9 m/s, during
precipitation or in heavy fog.
At the end of each working day, remove all swarf and
dirt produced during plate assembly.

Fig. 4. Properly fixed fastener.

Elevation/outer side of Ruukki panels with mineral
wool core is marked with overprint on panel side:
elewacja outside a.
Arrows indicate external facing of panel.
Assembly inconsistent with marking will cause loss of
warranty!
Ruukki Polska recommends detailed drawing solutions
included in this brochure but final decision about particular shape of design should be taken by designer.
Ruukki Polska is not responsible for effects of wrong
designing and assembly errors.

Fig. 1. Removing protective film from panel facing

Panels and flashings should be cut on stands covered

with a soft material (such as felt or polystyrene) to
procect coating from damaging.

Fig. 3. Fastener screw gun

Fig. 2. Panels cutting

It is recommended to cut panels with fine-toothed blades and to cut flashings with snips. Do not use angle
grinders to cut panels and flashings! (Fig. 2.)
During assembly, press panels into place with fixing
tool 1410 (made by Ruukki Polska) the tool helps to
ensure proper piece joining without risking any damage.
Panels should be fastened to structures with fasteners recommended by sandwich panel manufacturer.
Fastener types and dimensions are listed in Table 21.
Any other fasteners should be pre-approved by the
manufacturer.
