Abstract
The All Terrain Vehiicle or a.k.a ATV is a vehicle which is
subjected to intense loading due to rough and bumpy terrain
use . Hence , for that a good suspension system is to be
needed . Thus , it was to be identified that the ATV needs to
undergo frequent maintainance due to its use in rough terrains
which also reflects on the user comfort , reduced life span and
lack of performance and cost effectiveness . Hence , a new
suspension system is utilized by introducing the magnetic
spring instead of the normal shock absorbers . In addition to
that , it could absorb more shocks during rough terrain drives
and increased in life span , cost and performance
effectiveness .

Objective
This project aims at selecting, modifying, analyzing and
fabricating a suspension system capable of handling rough
terrains while maintaining the ride quality.
Various technologies are compared with the proposed
magnetic suspension system that uses normal spring, damper
and etc. Based on on-road measurements and results from
the literature, several specifications for the design of a
magnetic suspension system are derived. The measured onroad movement of the passive suspension system is
reproduced by magnetic actuation on an ATV setup, proving
the dynamic capabilities of a magnetic suspension system.
We completed this objective by doing extensive research on
the front and magnetic suspension arms geometry to help
reduce as much body roll as possible. Proper camber and
caster angles were provided to the front wheels. The shocks
will be set to provide the proper dampening and spring
coefficients to provide a smooth and well performing ride.
Better alignment with braking for good active impact
distribution of force also absorption
.

Working Principle
An electromagnetic suspension simply replace the
dampers with two opposing magnetic field with repulsive
forces strong enough to counter off the weight being
sprung on it . When a current passes through a wire, a
magnetic field around that wire is generated. When the
current through the wire stops, so does the previously
generated magnetic field. The strength of the generated
magnetic field is proportional to the size of the current
through the wire. When a wire is coiled, this generated
magnetic field is concentrated through the center of the
coil. The strength of this field can be greatly increased by
placing a ferromagnetic material in the center of the coil.

hydraulic suspension

A continuous supply of electric current is required to

maintain a magnetic field in an electromagnet, this field is
easily manipulated by changing the current in the wire.
Therefore, electromagnets are much more practical than
permanent
magnets
for
levitation
purposes.
Electromagnetic suspension (EMS) is the magnetic
levitation of an object achieved by constantly altering the
strength of a magnetic field produced by electromagnets
using a feedback loop.
