In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and

conventions of real media products?

When making my magazine I

went through a lot of
colours, but decided to go
with dark colours which give
the magazine a more
mysterious look.

confident and successful hip-

shown by his stance and his
facial expression.

Another way I used conventions of real

magazines was by selecting the name; I called the magazine explicit because the meaning of
explicit is perceived as a rude words or nudity which is both part of hip-hop.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My media product represents particular social groups because of the clothing my model uses
and also the colours. I believe that my magazine can easily be recognised as a hip-hop
magazine because of these concepts, and appeals to the hip-hop social group. Another way it
represents the social group is that the cocky pose is often used to represent hip-hop artists
because confidence assures the audience of there ability which is demonstrated in the photo’s
below. My model is looking at the camera so it has the effect that he is looking directly at the
audience.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

A media institution such as 'XXL' might distribute a magazine like mine because the genre is
the same. As 'XXL' distributes hip-hop magazines it would make sense that an institution
similar would distribute a magazine like mine. The distributer is there to print and deliver the
magazines into stores; they are normally paid a certain percentage of the profit. Other
magazines which will be distributed in this way are magazines such as complex and ID
magazine.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for my magazine would obviously be hip-hop fans, most probably in an age
range of 14-35, however the ages may vary. The audience would be both male and female
however predominantly male because hip-hop fans are mostly male. They would shop at a
variety of shop such as pilot, wellgosh and urban outfitters. They would be interested in hip-
hop and rap as well as a variety of other music. Their favourite music channel would
probably be M.T.V Base.

How did you attract/address your audience?

The main point of attraction on my magazine, as on any magazine is the front page. To try
and lure the audience in the front cover has relevant colours to the magazine genre, so you
know straight away that the magazine is hip-hop.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this process?

I have learnt about various technologies such as Photoshop, which prior to this project I knew
little about. I have also gained knowledge of the wide variety of editing you can do with
Photoshop. Not only have I learned about Photoshop I also used learned how to use the apple
Mac’s video editing software which before this project I knew little about because at first i
was investigating how to make a film but decided to make a magazine.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression
from it to full product?

Looking back at my preliminary task I have learned how to utilise the 'magic wand' tool
which enables you to delete a certain colour or part of the image. I have also learned how to
layer the photo's on Photoshop and my ability to do this steadily increased as I progressed
with my magazine. However I do feel that I should have improved at cropping more than I
have done.
