Role of a Teacher
The role of the teacher has been well recognised in the traditional Indian thought through

the centuries. . Earlier, teacher was called the 'Guru or Acharya'.

Guru Brahma Gurur Vishnu

Guru Devo Maheshwaraha

Guru Saakshat Para Brahma

Tasmai Shree Gurave Namaha

Guru is verily the representative of Brahma (Creator), Vishnu (Preserver) and Shiva

(Transformer). He creates, sustains knowledge and destroys the weeds of ignorance. I

salute such a Guru.

In the present context, the role of a Teacher (Guru) in society is both significant and

valuable. It has far-reaching influence on the society he lives in and no other personality
can have an influence more profound than that of a teacher. Students are deeply affected

by the teacher’s love and affection, his character, his competence, and his moral

commitment. A popular teacher becomes a model for his students. The students try to

follow their teacher in his manners, costumes, etiquette, style of conversation and his get

up. He is their ideal. So, as from all, the role of the teacher is multi dimensional as:

Teacher as Caretaker: The first example when an individual comes in contact with a

teacher is when he / she is a toddler. A large percentage of working mothers all over the

world send their children to day care where the child is taken care of, from morning to

evening by teachers who feed them, play with them and take care of their every need.

Teacher as Friend: The concept of play-way schools has become quite popular. Before

starting regular schools, many parents enroll their children to play-way schools where

kids of similar age groups come in contact with one another. Here too, teachers become a

child's trusted friend and teach kids to open their minds in new activities, thoughts and

information.

Teacher as Knowledge Banker: Proper education is the need of the day if we want our

country to progress. This is because every child must be given the best level of education

possible and to achieve this, it is essential to develop proper infrastructure, open new

schools in villages as well as cities and hire well trained, motivated teachers who can not

only act as facilitators of education but also guide students and become a good role model

for them.
Besides school education, the years spent in college also shape the future of individuals.

Here again, Lecturers and Professors have the power to truly inspire these young

individuals to develop their thought processes and choose the right path in their pursuit

for quality education.

Teacher as Inspirator: Without even realizing it, teachers have the ability to create a

strong like or dislike for the subject they teach their students. The most difficult subjects

can be made interesting by an inspired and dedicated teacher.

Teachers as Frameworkers: These educators do a great deal of planning, organization,

and management up front. They feel that it frees them up to work alongside their students

as coaches and guides. These teachers are very likely to be open to learning alongside

their students. Robert Miller, 4/5 grade teacher at Port Orange Elementary, in Port

Orange, Florida, is an excellent example of this.

“I spend a tremendous amount of time on planning and management,” Robert Miller says

that “You have a well planned infrastructure. After you have established that, you have to

be willing to take the risk of turning learning over to the students. I give the objective,

describe the outcome, and we work together to establish the criteria. After that, I grow,

observe, amend, and expand with them---managing, editing, and learning alongside their

experiences.”

Teachers as Enablers: Magda Kahn, Instructor at Groves High School in Garden City,

Georgia, was inspired by a digital storytelling workshop offered by the Massie Heritage

Center in Savannah, Georgia. Ms Kahn quickly admits that her technology skills were

basic. “I learned a great deal by working through the digital storytelling process myself,’
she says. “ I began to understand the power of technology and its relevance to learning.

My big challenge was finding a way to translate it to the classroom.” She identifies two

hurdles: her lack of technical expertise, and the constraints of current educational

requirements.

So, as from all, we can say that, there is no denying the fact that the role of a teacher

in a student's life is very crucial right from the time when a child joins a day care

centre to the stage when he / she takes a step forward towards establishing a

professionalcareer.

Types of Teachers

The types of teachers in this world are many. Some teachers are strict, some are lenient

and some others are in the middle way, neither lenient nor strict.

We have classified teachers into the following categories:

Friendly Teacher

A friendly teacher acts like a friend for his/her students. Teacher friend combines

both the guidance of a teacher and the understanding of a friend. We all, at some

point of time, aspire for an understanding teacher. Such a teacher acts like our

friend, philosopher and guide. Such a teacher is more close to the students and a

better educator.
• Lenient Teacher

A lenient teacher is one who is not very fussy. They do not crib about things such

as doing homework on time or sitting quietly in the class, etc.

• Perfectionist Teacher

An ideal teacher is one we respect from our heart. He/she acts, as a guide to the

students, but at the same times does not push them too much. A perfect teacher

motivates the students and boosts their morale. He/she tries to encourage the

students. Such a teacher prefers to give positive motivation to students.

• StrictTeacher

A strict teacher is very tough on students. He/she always insists on adhering to deadlines.

Strict teacher is like a disciplinarian, always keeping students on their toes. Students who

have a very strict teacher always live under constant deadlines. However, such a teacher

fails to touch the hearts of the students. Students never respect such a teacher. They

accept him/her teacher only out of compulsion. He/she can never earn the love of his/her

students.

• Funny Teacher

A funny teacher is like a god sent to the students. Such a teacher always wants to

see his/her students smile. They are like stress-busters in our life. They help us in

forgetting all our sorrows.

However, it does not mean that this kind of teacher is not serious about studies.

He/she does encourage his students, but in the healthy way. They teach the

students without burdening them. They are not fixated on deadlines.

Responsibilities of Teachers

Just as students have responsibilities that will help to ensure success in their classes,

teachers must accept responsibilities, too. To be as effective as he or she can, every

teacher should have the following responsibilities:

Responsibility I: Instructional Skills

• The teacher demonstrates current, accurate, and comprehensive knowledge of

topics covered in the curriculum, (knowledge of subject matter).

• The teacher plans instruction to achieve desired objectives which reflect division

curriculum guidelines

• The teacher uses instructional strategies to promote student learning.

• The teacher uses effective communication with students.

• The teacher provides for individual differences.

Responsibility II: Assessment Skills

• The teacher provides on-going and timely feedback that encourages student

learning.

• The teacher provides evidence of student learning (both individual and group)

through a variety of assessment measures.

• The teacher uses assessment results to make both daily and long-range

instructional decisions.

Responsibility III: Management Skills

• The teacher establishes and maintains rapport with students.

• The teacher makes the physical environment as safe and conducive to learning as

possible.

• The teacher maintains appropriate standards of behavior in a fair and consistent

manner.

Responsibility IV: Professionalism

• The teacher demonstrates a professional appearance and practices ethical

standards appropriate to the profession.

• The teacher participates in a meaningful and continuous process of professional

development.

• The teacher provides service to the profession and the school.

• The teacher maintains effective communication with parents and the community.

Conclusion

Besides discussing all the positive aspects of teacher, I am sorry to say there are

some black shapes in this Nobel profession also. So many cases of molestation are

taking place at school level because a teacher is teacher whether he is teaching at

school level and at college level. But, I am also feeling very proud to say that no such

cases have been identified at college level in our state of Haryana. Because, if a

teacher is considered as a role model, he should behave like a Nobel person so that,

the teacher gets the same respect as it was years before.

If teacher will not discharged his responsibilities properly or change the track set

for a Nobal teacher, than the alphabet of the word TEACHER will also changed and

it will become CHEATER.
