VO: In this episode we will discuss the possible negative effects of social media on mental health and the other implications that can occur. VO: It is reported in January 2015 there was 3.01 Billion active Internet users and 47 % of these users were users on Facebook. There are also 2.07 Billion active social media accounts. On Facebook 4.5 Billion likes are also generated daily using the site, the average user spends 40 minutes a day on the site and smartphone users check Facebook 14 times a day. 1 in 3 people feels more dissatisfied with their lives after visiting Facebook according to a recent study and a staggering one third of all divorce fillings in 2011 in the United States contained the word Facebook. VO: In 2014 there were 350,000 tweets every minute even though 90% of the worlds Internet users do not use twitter. 170 minutes is the average time per month spent by users on Twitter VO: Instagram launched as an iPhone app on October 6, 2010. By December 2010, Instagram had one million registered users (it took foursquare a year to reach this milestone and Twitter two years). Currently (March 2014) Instagram has over 200 million active users 70% of the Instagram users check their feed at least once a day, 35 % several times a day 90% of Instagram users are younger than 35 years. The survey found that 53% of participants said social media sites had changed their behavior, while 51% of these said the change had been negative. EXPERT (Julie): *Dialogue of expert*
Many people using social networking sites make comparisons with
others, which can lead to negative emotions. Those who said their lives had been worsened by using social media also reported feeling less confident when they compared their achievements against their friends. EXPERT (Julie): *Dialogue of expert* VO: The survey revealed that two thirds of participants reported difficulty relaxing and sleeping after they used the sites, while 55% said they felt "worried or uncomfortable" when they were unable to log onto their social media accounts. EXPERT (Nick): *Dialogue of expert* EXPERT (Julie) *Dialogue of expert* VO: According to Enough is Enough - an organization that aims to make Internet use safer for children and families - 95% of teenagers who use social media have witnessed forms of cyber bullying on social networking sites and 33% have been victims of cyber bullying. Studies found that daily use of Facebook can make people more prone to depression, anxiety and other social disorders.
