Matthew 4:1-17
"A Light in the Darkness"
Guest Preacher: Ben Shryock

We Were Immigrants, Too

Each of us in this church come
from
immigrant
stock,
an
ancestry that were proud of. We
tell stories of how our ancestors
struggled, of the hardships they
endured. We tell stories of how,
over the course of their lives, they
grew to become Americans,
even though they came from
very different cultures, languages
and backgrounds. Some of our
ancestors came over on the
Mayflower; some came during
the German and Irish famines;
some came after the war. Today,
waves
of
desperate
and
persecuted peoples arrive on our
shores, seeking the same hope
that brought our foreparents, as
more people are displaced from
their homes and nations than in
any time in human history. What
are their stories? What do we do
with them?
The Social Concerns Team is
organizing our years Singing Bowl
theme around understanding
issues surrounding immigration.
They have arranged an amazing

series of speakers addressing

different aspects of the topic
In March, Ben Shryock, an
immigration lawyer, will kick off
the series with an introduction
to immigration- conceptions
and misconceptions we have
about the largest migration of
human beings the world has
ever experienced.
April 10, Sister J.M. Flynn will be
sharing her experience of
saving an immigrant family
from deportation.
May 1, Barbara Graham will
be speaking on the DREAM
Act and issues around legal
representation of immigrants.
The lecture series will continue
in September, October, and
November, with immigrants
coming to share their stories.
This will be a fascinating and
challenging lecture series; please
use the opportunity to tell all your
neighbors, friends and co-workers
about this Community Forum on
Immigration. It will be an excellent
opportunity for us to minister to the
communitys need for adequate
information, and an excellent
opportunity to invite the community
into our church.
In Christs love,
Pastor Hawkins

begins a remembrance of the last week of

Jesus life, known as Holy Week. In this
powerful, dramatic service, we recall Jesus
life and death. After church, from 12-2, the
Confirmation class will be studying the most
difficult question of the Christian faith: Why does God
allow suffering?

THURSDAY, MAR. 24, 7pm We

remember Jesus last meal with His disciples before He is
executed the following day. This Last Supper is the basis
for our Holy Communion, when all that we do is done In
The Remembrance Of Him.
GOOD FRIDAY, MAR. 25, 10am Gather at Ewald
Chapel on the Three Pillars campus on the corner of Hwy
67 & Hwy 18 for our annual ecumenical Good Friday
service. Members from Emmanuel UCC, St. Brunos RC
and Ottawa Presbyterian share the solemn observance
of Jesus death.

EASTER!!

MAR. 27, 9:30am The most important

event of the whole Christian year, when suffering and
death are overcome by the love of God. This is the event
that created the Christian faith; we will remember it with
Holy Communion, trumpets and song! An Easter egg hunt
for the children follows the service of Resurrection.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
SUNDAY SCHOOL
Our lessons have been on Parables and Miracles. So far
we have learned about the Prodigal Son, healing the
blind and the Parable of the Talents. We will continue to
learn more about these until we talk about our Easter
lessons. We hope to have the kids singing a song with the
choir on either Palm Sunday or Easter Sunday.
Souper Bowl Update: you donated 98 food items for the
Souper Bowl...46 for the Panthers and 52 for the Super
Bowl Champions the Broncos! Thank you to everyone
who brought items in!
Movie Update: A movie about the prodigal son called
"The Lost Son" was filmed in February. All Sunday School
kids were involved in the production. Movie Premiere is
planned for April 3 during church service. During their
lessons about this parable, the kids learned about the
power of God's love and forgiveness.
REMEMBER: If you haven't done so, please fill out the
permission form so that we can use your child's picture or
video with them in it in the newsletter, on our Facebook
page, or other public place. You can drop off these
forms with a teacher or place in the Christian Ed mailbox.
There are extra forms in the blue room and in the file
folder in the Christian Ed mailbox.
And don't forget to bring in some extra money if you can
for our offering.
Thank you!
The Christian Ed Team.

CONFIRMANDS!
MARCH 12 & 13 CONFIRMATION RETREAT: The Fast
That Lasts

Saturday & Sunday, March 12 & 13, Confirmands go to

Plymouth UCC in Milwaukee to study and experience
issues around hunger with about 50 other SE Association
UCC youth. Meet in the church parking lot at 8am with
sleeping bags in hand!

MARCH 20 ROUND TABLE: SUFFERING

March 20 from 12-2, our Round Table will explore why

there is suffering in the world. And your memorization?
Psalm 23 in the King James Version!!!

CONFIRMANDS! HAVE YOU STARTED YOUR

MARCH MEMORIZATION YET? (Its due March20!)
A Scripture of your choice (NOT based on how short it is,
but that it is meaningful to you!). This scripture will be the
basis of your Confirmation sermon.

ADULTS
ADULT STUDY: TUESDAYS from 9:30am-10:30am;
WEDNESDAYS from 7:00-8:00pm (on March 2, 9, &
16th we begin with a soup & bread supper from 6:307pm)

Jump on the bandwagon and join your fellow members in

a study of how Christianity developed. Before Jesus ever
started His ministry, the Roman Emperors were called The
Savior of the World, The Son of God, and The Prince of
Peace, but their idea of how peace would be achieved
was by conquering the world. When Jesus comes on the
scene, these imperial titles are taken over by Him. Why?
What does it mean when the titles of the Roman Imperial
Theology are taken from Caesar and given to Jesus?
Come to this fascinating study! No Bible background
necessary.
Every Tuesday morning and Wednesday
evening through May 4.

One Great Hour of Sharing is the Lenten Offering of the

United Church of Christ that supports disaster, refugee,
and development actions.

That Lorna & Jere Marheine provide respite care for

Ferd Stanek every week allowing his wife Judy to
have some time of relaxation?
Did you know that SO MUCH GOOD SPILLS OUT OF
OUR CHURCH TO MAKE OUR COMMUNITY HOPEFUL
AND STRONG???
(PS- we dont even know what gifts you might be
bringing to the community. Let Donna or Nansi know
so we can celebrate!)

The One Great Hour of Sharing offering is rooted in

responding to Christs call to welcome the stranger. The
offering provides assistance beyond emergency food,
water and shelter.
Our faith calls us to respond to people in crisis.
Unfortunately, crisis such as war, disaster, changing
climate or a devastated economy have forced millions of
people over the years to seek safety as refugees.
Today, our world is facing a refugee crisis beyond
anything we have seen in recent generations. At this
moment, there are more refugees in the world than at
any time since World War II. Millions of people are alive
today only because they have escaped perilous
situations.
The United Church of Christ has stepped forward to serve
as co-sponsors, mentors and friends to newly arrived
refugees on behalf of the Church, helping people in
need begin a new life free from violence, persecution, or
a shifting climate. The offering provides financial support
to help refugees. We are helping families begin a new life
with hope for a better future.
Through our sharing an amazing domino effect of joy
and sharing starts: We begin to see ourselves as part of all
of Gods children everywhere. Joy-filled sharing shows
that our hearts and hands are open to giving that fosters
restoration and speaks to the generosity of Gods love.
As we respond generously, may we recognize that in
giving, we are on a personal journey to live in Christs
image! Sharing brings joy to us, to others and to God.
Please give generously on Sunday, March 6. You will find
OGHS envelopes in the fellowship pads.

buried deep within me.
Rise up to fulfill your destiny
whose time has come.
