Emergency Repairs Needed

At Police Headquarters Annex
The City Council of University
City received a Feb. 16 report from
city staff that condemned the police
headquarters annex to city hall.
In a memo to City Manager
Lehman
Walker,
Community
Development
Director
Andrea
Riganti cited steam leaks, electrical
hazards and damaged sewer pipes
that are problematic. She said the
city is trying to relocate the police
department to new quarters, a
process that could take three months.
Walker told the council that the
city was considering moving the
department to another building,
utilizing temporary modular units or
using $500,000 in funds to finance
emergency repairs to the 100-year-old
annex.

I dont know how we can intend

to leave the personnel there for
three months, said Council Member
Paulette Carr.
I think the biggest surprise is that
our own staff condemned our own
building, added Council Member
Terry Crow.
Some residents suggested that
the condemnation was orchestrated
by the city to support the eventual
development of a new police
headquarters, rather than renovation
of the existing annex. The city
is considering options to replace
or renovate the annex, and some
residents support renovation of the
existing facility.
No decisions have been made
behind closed doors, Mayor Shelley
Welsch said.

Opposition To Topless Bar

Shootings, drugs and violence
(are) associated with Social House in
Soulard, McLoughlin warned.
Loop businessman Joe Edwards,
who serves as president of the Loop
Special Business District, also spoke
against the proposed bar.
City Manager Lehman Walker said
the citys plan commission would soon

take up the matter and may consider

new regulations that would serve to
prevent the lawful opening of Social
House II. He said the establishment
at minimum would require several
city permits, including those for
occupancy,
business
operation,
signage and liquor.
I dont see this council granting
this establishment a liquor license,
Kraft added.
