Starbucks

McCaf

Top 3 Brands up 10%

In 2010, Europes top 70 coffee bar brands notched up a total growth
of 4% to 9,723 units; for the top 3 it was even an increase of about
10% more stores on average, with Starbucks once again coming in first,
followed by Costa Coffee and McCaf. Market leader Starbucks was able
to regain its strength after extensive restructuring measures. Research &
Ranking by FoodService Europe&Middle East (Simone Straubinger).
The European market for coffee bars continues to show an upward potential. As
part of the quickservice world, coffee
bars have far more to offer than Latte
Macchiato, cakes and snacks: they provide short or even longer breaks from
everyday life in a feel-good atmosphere
or the lifestyle sensation of walking
through the streets with a to-go cup. Despite the increased use of the social media,
having a chat with ones colleagues and
friends is as popular as ever. And this is
something people do not want to be
without.
In 2009, the top 70 coffee bar brands
achieved only a 3% increase in terms of
unit growth (in 2010 it was 4%). Many

26

players cut back or even froze their plans

for expansion at the time and had a very
close look at their existing network, especially in countries like Russia or Spain.
Instead of expanding the network, organisational structures were revised.
Thus strengthened and with a tailwind of
improved cyclical indicators, many opted
for growth again in 2010 and opened
new stores. Steady expansion can be expected for this year as well.
One problem that affected all the players
in 2010 were the volatile commodity
markets for coffee, cocoa and milk. This
development is expected to continue.
Price adjustments were occasionally
necessary last year.

Top 70 players
The Ranking lists 70 coffee bar players
with altogether 9,723 units in Europe.
Exactly 4.2% unit growth in twelve months
(2009: +3%, 2008: +16%, 2007: +21%).
New in the top 5: Caff Nero from UK.
With a presence of 1,373 units in 19
European countries Starbucks is again
market leader. More than a half of its
European coffee bars are in Great Britain.
Starbucks is also global market leader.
For the second time the top 3 brands
with over 1,000 units each! Strongest
growth from Costa Coffee with 169 units
(+14%). The distance to the market
leader Starbucks is getting smaller.
McCaf is moving up quickly, too. 130
new shop-in-shop coffee bars, which
means a 12% increase in the number of
units (81 units alone in Germany!).
A year with opposing expansion trends:
36 brands reported additional openings,
29 brands negative and 5 constant
growth rates. All top 10 coffee bar brands
achieved favourable development.

Top 12 profiles
1. Starbucks. The probably best-known
coffee bar brand has around 17,000
units in more than 40 countries all over
the world. After the years of strong
growth until 2008 and a consolidation in
2009, Starbucks is strong enough once
again for further expansion. In Europe,
the company again chalked up an increase after a drop of 1% in 2009. The
number of units in the 19 countries has
gone up by 6%. Further growth is on the
agenda for the brands 40th anniversary.
One novelty that has created quite a stir
is the new Starbucks logo that will soon
be embellishing stores and coffee
beakers worldwide. The verbal elements

open to new fields of activity (retail trade and gastronomy) as well
as offering an increased assortment competence.
The 2010 fiscal year (ending 3rd
October) revealed the following
highlights:
Total net revenues increased
9.5% to $10.7 bn.
Comparable store sales increased 7%, driven by a 3% increase in traffic and 3% increase in
average ticket.
2. Costa Coffee. The Costa estate
has grown dramatically since the
last count. Costa Coffee (owned by
Whitbread) operates 1,175 stores
in the UK. This figure is made up of
212 in London and 963 outside of
London. It has a further 616 stores
internationally spread across 24
countries. Of these 167 are in Europe. Following last years acqui-

sition of coffeeheaven, around 70

of the companys 80 stores in
Poland still trade under the coffeeheaven name. In addition to its
activities in Europe, Costa also
has a presence in the Middle East,
China and India. Given that Whitbread, the UK-based group that
owns Costa, aims to expand the
brand to 3,000 stores by 2015, we

growth in 2011. In the UK Costa
Coffee overtook Starbucks in sales
terms, with estimated systemwide sales of about 460m
against Starbucks UK sales of
around 400m. It is also the customers favourite, according to research carried out by Allegra.
3. McCaf. McDonalds shop-inshop concept has a presence in 22
European countries. The newcomer among them is Slovenia
with 2 McCafs. The formula,
which originates from Australia,
achieved its biggest plus in Germany with 12% (a total of 737
units in 2010). Expansion slowed
down, however, compared with
the figures for previous years
(2009: 21.7%, 2008: 35.8%). Paris
saw the opening for the first time
of a stand-alone McCaf with the
addition of a salad bar. The classic
McDonalds offering has been dispensed with completely. The new
concept roll-out will depend on
the results of the test-run. McCaf
is already integrated into more
than 2,650 McDonalds restaurants worldwide.
4. Tchibo. The German coffee
roasting company was able to increase the number of its stores by
1%. Tchibo operates 830 coffee
bars in 8 countries, 532 in Germany alone. In 2010, the focus
was mainly on extending the food
offer and the increased use of fairtrade beans. Absolute top seller in
the brands home country is filter
coffee.
