1. How would you explain Lannys response to the change proposed by Pat? What, in
your view, are the reasons or causes for his reluctance?
Its pretty common to face challenges whenever a new change has been proposed.
Unfortunately, in this scenario its Lanny, the senior most employee who actuals need to
drive the change, is against this change. In my opinion, the reasons for reluctance are

Self-Interest: Ego impedes from adapting to the change. As they want to

maintain the same status of being the point of contact for every single issue.
Lack of Trust: Trust plays a vital role in the organizational success. We need to
trust each other and work, else its hard to accept the changes and spreads

negativity in the group.

Upscaling: We might need to upscale on new technologies and for that training

would be provided.
Fear of unknown: This occurs when change happen without any intimacy and
also not being given enough time for the employees to come out of their comfort

zone and adjust to the new changes.

Loss of Job: This occurs when the management announces regarding
alignment of the staff into different departments as they might lead to downsize

the employees.
Time Sense: Change has to be implemented at the right time in the right way as

Time decides everything.

Individuals Change Tendency: Few individuals love the change as it gives an
opportunity for them to learn new things professional and personally. However,

others hate it as they are used to routine schedule and are in their comfort zone.
Concerns: Change arose many doubts in individuals mind such as whether they

can get through it or not, compete with others or not. How things got to work?
Overwork & Responsibilities: Change adds more work and additional
responsibilities. They are used to the normal workflow and know how to

multitask.
Saturation: Individuals might trounce by continuous changes which resists them
from getting into the flow.

Recognition: Individuals need to be rewards and recognized for the efforts they
put in to get abide the changes and make the business achieve the goals and
objectives.

2. What could Pat have done during the meeting to respond to Lannys concerns about
the change?
Lanny is frustrated listening to the change as he has been in the system for a very long
time. This is the least expected from such an experienced person. However, Pat could
have actually responded to the Lannys concerns by

Maintain Professionalism: Need to be professional and treat others with

respect irrespective of the individuals who agree or disagree as this helps to

earn respect in return and adds credibility.

Listening: Listening to all the concerns and understand from his end the
reasons for his unsupportiveness shows the respect towards his opinions. As it

helps in effective and appropriate response.

Agenda: Need to set the agenda as this helps in controlling the meeting and will
not entertain any deviations from the points need to be discussed. If not, we

would miss out the important points to be discussed.

Accurate Information: In order to convince critics, its important to be clear and
provide accurate information. Individuals form perceptions based on the
information they have so providing them more information helps them in

reevaluate their opinions.

Agree to Disagree: No matter how long we discuss, there would be one point
wherein we would strongly disagree and that prevents further discussion. So, in
that case, its better to agree to disagree on that point and move on with

another topic. Later on, we can work on it and fix it.

Morality: Need to think whether a health environment would occur by cultural
values or religious beliefs. In order to maintain that, we have to listen for the
underlying reasons for criticism and then get prepared to respond to those
underlying reasons in a positive way.

3. If you were Pat and wanted to meet with Lanny privately to discuss the change, what
would you do?
Pat decided to meet Lanny privately and discuss regarding the change and listen to his
concerns and work out on it.
Strategical Thinking: Need to think strategically before proceeding to convince the
person who disagrees.
Be Prepared: Need to get prepared with the information he might listen by considering
all the past statements made.
Eloquent Message: Need to provide important information regarding the benefits of the
new change instead of the loss occurred with the current one.
Handling Situation: Need to handle the situation and clearly disagree if its incorrect
with supportive data instead of just words so even they understand it clearly.
