Dear Parents,

CANDO will be speaking to Batavias Board of Education at the March 8th Board of Education meeting in order
to update the board on the current status of gifted education in the district from our perspective. In order to

Finally, we appreciate your time in helping us provide accurate feedback to the Batavia Board of Education. If
you would like to speak before the board on March 22nd, please keep these thoughts in mind and
include them in your remarks:
1. Gifted Handbook: The Batavia public school district needs a current gifted handbook, outlining all the
policies, identification measures and services provided by the district for all students grades
Kindergarten through 12th grade. Without the handbook in place to provide guidance, gifted services are
inconsistent throughout the district and often change drastically from year to year.
2. BPS should develop these procedures and identification methods based on current research and best
practices that is easily found through national level gifted organizations.
3. We do not believe the entire responsibility of gifted services should be on the classroom teachers, thus
support the continuation of Gifted Coaches in their current role. We also feel that it is very important for
teachers to be involved in the process of developing gifted services.
4. Evaluation of gifted services requires a process. As a district, we should regularly evaluate what works
and what doesnt, and have a timely method and process for improvements.
Deb will need a copy of your comments in order to present those to the board in written format. Please feel
free to contact your school liaison or one of the CANDO executive board members if you have any questions.
Their contact information can be found on the CANDO website at www.BataviaCANDO.weebly.com
