This poem will probably bring back a few memories for some!
We bought a finca today!
We sat at a long table with the Notary at the head,
The old owners opposite,
Papers gone through, checked, signed and countersigned.
Finally, a large manila envelope, stuffed with cash, handed over.
The owners preferred it that way.
Sealed with a kiss and handshake.
We own a finca!
What the hell have we done?
Yes, we own a side of a mountain.
Our finca stands on an ancient terrace,
Flat, with a commanding view out to sea; the Bay of Mazarrn
below.
Our finca, five good-sized rooms inside, being built of pretty sturdy
stone,
With some walls missing, others collapsed, while others lean out or
in.
The roof is simple, really not problem. There is none.
Hang on though; the roof tiles are there.
The water deposito, sieve-like in its present form.
What the hell have we done?
No running water, no sanitation, no electricity,
No telephone, even the mobile signal rather poor.

Dog, donkey,

This is an
essential
part of our

only is this a time to ensure the placement
is suitable for the animal, it is also an
opportunity for prospective adopters to ask

Well this has been quite an eventful month

Herbs for the garden or allotment A bakers dozen for starters by Dick
Handscombe
Since I first had a personal garden 74 years
ago at the age of five, herbs of one sort
or another always featured. From memory
the first were almost non-destructible
horseradish, chives and dandelions; the
latter to add to wartime salads and to feed
my pet rabbit.
While living in Spain we have an allotment
to supplement the garden, plus an olive
grove, but I can still recall the herbs that
grew well in the UK and they now feature
in the Mediterranean style holistic garden

below. Why a bakers dozen? Well my first
Saturday job was to count up piles of 960
farthings and bag them for the bank at my
fathers bake house and shop and every
thirteenth bag was my pocket and birthday
money, in the same way that in those days
a thirteenth donut or roll was free.

sunken pot to control the expansive
roots. Added to the boiling water
adds a good touch to your new

and an infusion is better than a
mug of tea or coffee for a Saturday
night hangover. Interesting for the
range of leaf colours scents and
flavours. At one point there were

Beans
A friend of mine is vegetarian and is always
asking me for recipes without meat so she
can cook something different. What better
reason than to look at Beans in cooking
and add a few recipes for you, Jan? There
are many varieties you can buy in cans
or dried, but remember, if cooking from
packets do this very slowly and add some
salt to stop splitting. Dried beans can be
frozen once cooked and then added to any
dish towards the end for maximum flavour.
Below are some favourites and some not
so well known, but all easy as usual. The
chilli is very popular in our house and I
usually make a big pot and then freeze
into portions to be defrosted when I am
too busy to cook. I usually buy different
coloured peppers to add to the dish rather
than just red and I always add mushrooms,
but these are optional.
Buen Apetito
Page 46
1 large onion
1 red pepper (or half red, green and yellow)
2 garlic cloves, peeled and chopped
1 heaped tsp hot chilli powder (or 1 level
tbsp if you only have mild)
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp ground cumin
500g lean minced beef
1 beef stock cube
400g can chopped tomatoes
tsp dried marjoram
1 tsp sugar
2 tbsp tomato pure
410g can red kidney beans
Mushrooms (optional)
Add the oil to pan and heat. Add the onions
and cook. Add the garlic, peppers, chilli
powder, paprika and ground cumin. Give it
a good stir, then leave it to cook for another
5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add minced
beef and stir until brown. Crumble 1 beef
stock cube into 300ml hot water. Pour this
into the pan with the mince mixture. Add
chopped tomatoes and marjoram, sugar
and add a good shake of salt and pepper.
Add tomato pure and stir the sauce well.
Simmer it gently for 20 minutes. Drain
and rinse red kidney beans in a sieve and
stir them into the chilli pot. Bring to the
boil again, and add chopped mushrooms
if using and simmer for further 5 minutes.
Serve with soured cream and plain boiled
long grain rice.
Black Bean and Rice
Salt
2 tbsp olive oil
2 cups long-grain rice
1 medium onion, chopped
1 large green or red pepper,
2 medium cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 x 15oz cans black beans, undrained
1 cup vegetable or chicken broth
2 tbsp red wine vinegar
2 bay leaves
Freshly ground black pepper
tsp ground cumin
In a medium saucepan, combine 4 cups of
water with 1 tsp salt and 1 tsp of the oil.
Bring to a boil. Stir in the rice, cover and
reduce heat to low. Cook for 20 minutes
or until the rice is tender. Meanwhile, in a
saucepan, heat the remaining 2 tbsp oil
over medium heat. Saut the onion, green
pepper, and garlic until softened, about 5
minutes. Add the beans, broth, vinegar,
bay leaves, black pepper, cumin, and 1
tsp salt. Cover and bring to a boil. Reduce
heat to low and let simmer for 10 minutes.
Remove the bay leaves. Spoon the beans
over the rice. Serve warm.

Zika Virus
A fourth case of the tropical Zika virus has
been detected in Spain, this time in the Murcia
Region in a man who recently travelled to an
affected country. He was treated at the Rafael
Mndez hospital in Lorca and his test results
revealed he is positive for the infection,
which is passed on through Aedes Aegypti
mosquitoes which are only found in tropical
climates. The four cases in Spain have been
in Latin Americans who have recently been to
their country of origin. All four patients are
said to be in good health and none of them
have been hospitalised.
Sooner or later, cases which originated in
Spain will probably start to appear. The virus
is nothing to worry about unless the affected
person is pregnant, when it is believed to
be linked to brain deformities in the foetus.
Symptoms are similar to the flu, including
aching, tiredness and headaches, joint pain
and conjunctivitis. It cannot be transmitted
person-to-person, but the presence of tiger
mosquitoes last summer in Spain means
public health authorities are concerned the
Aedes Aegypti flies may find their way to

Pandemonium
a
n
Autobiography
by Brian Blessed
There is no one
quite like Brian
Blessed.
Hes
an actor, film
star,
trained
u n d e r t a k e r,
u n l i k e l y
diplomat, secret
r o m a n t i c ,
m a r t i a l
artist
and
m o u n t a i n e e r.
Hes
also
a
brilliant storyteller who will - and you must
brace yourself - simply leap out of the
pages at you.
Absolute Pandemonium will take
you on a riotous journey from Brians
childhood, growing up the son of a miner
in Goldthorpe, to finding fame in Z-Cars.
Youll see Brian falling for Katharine
Hepburn on the set of The Trojan Women,
suffering wires strapped round his private
parts as he was hoisted into the heavens
on Flash Gordon, almost causing an
international incident when meeting the
Emperor and Empress of Japan and getting
the role of Boss Nass on Star Wars Episode
I: The Phantom Menace.
Brian takes secret revenge on headmistress
Mrs Jarman and her very big bottom,
punches Harold Pinter, loves and hates
Peter OToole, woos his beautiful wife
Hildegard Neil and braves the shocking
death toll on cosy TV drama My Family
and Other Animals. This is a funny, warmhearted, life-affirming, LOUD and unique
memoir from a much-loved figure.
The End of an
Earring by Pam
St Clement
In
January
2012, one of
Eastenders
longest-serving
and best-loved
characters
breathed
her
last
when
Pat
Butcher
succumbed
to
cancer.
Pams
mother
died when she
was
a
baby,
leaving her with a father whose life
didnt really have space for a child. Pat
had an itinerant childhood, with various
stepmothers and foster families, before an
advertisement in The Lady took 11-yearold Pamela to the farm in Devon that
was to become her true home, with the
aunts who became her surrogate parents.
She discovered her love of animals
there, alternated with life at The Warren
boarding school in West Sussex, where she
discovered her passion for acting.
On leaving school, Pam moved to London
and worked on stage and television
throughout the sixties and seventies,
before her first appearance on EastEnders
in 1986 and the offer of a permanent
role a few months later. Pam recalls her
involvement in the Womens Movement
of the 1970s, her lifelong love of animals
and the worries about her weight that have
dogged her since her teenage years.
This incredibly warm memoir reveals the
woman behind the popular Eastenders
character, a woman who, apart perhaps
from her earrings, couldnt be more
different from Pat.

The Benefits:
Oral Surgery:
After an extraction the PRP reduces
inflammation and pain and it also helps to
heal the gum and the bone faster and with
better quality. Patients under Bifosfonate
treatments have less chance of a bone
necrosis.
Wrinkle Reduction
The PRP attenuates the wrinkles in the
infiltrated areas and the facial expression
lines lose their depth.
Implants:
We put the PRP all over the implants just
before we put them into the bone to improve
the implants integration with the bone and
reduce the possibility of losing the implants.
Anti-Aging:
The ability of PRP to activate tissue
regeneration can counteract degenerative
changes in the skin, improving the tone and
skin elasticity.

Remanufactured Cartridges
These started out as new OEM cartridges, but
instead of throwing a perfectly usable and
durable plastic shell away, another company
has refurbished it to be used again. You can
expect a wide range of quality and price for
both ink and toner cartridges.
Inkjet Printers Ink Drying Up
In our warm climate if the cartridges are left
in-situ without being used, the warm air will
slowly evaporate the liquid content of the ink
leaving behind a slug of thick gloop which
cannot be used to print anything. One solution
is to remove the cartridges and wrap them in
cling-film and place them in the fridge.
Print Quality
Laser printers can print faster than inkjet
printers, which is fine if you print a few pages
at a time, but high volume users will notice a
huge difference.
Laser printers produce perfect sharp black
text. If your print jobs are mostly text with
occasional graphics, laser is the way to go.
Laser printers also handle small fonts and fine
lines far better than inkjet.
Laser printers are better prepared to handle
high-volume print jobs.
Although theyre more expensive initially,
laser toner cartridges print more sheets
relative to their cost than inkjet cartridges
and are less wasteful so work out cheaper in
the long run.
All-In-One laser printers are also available.
Unless your printer is still under warranty, if it
malfunctions in any way and refuses to print
or does not print correctly, there are very
few places that will repair it! This is mainly
because it is very messy and obtaining the
relevant spare parts is nigh on impossible,
unless you can obtain a similar model and
cannibalise it. Even then it is not guaranteed!
Sometimes it is cheaper to get a new
one!

Pugh and Ian Robinson, just two points
behind.
Results:
Division 1, Peter Coupland (v good) won
on count-back from Geoff Ewins (also v
good).
Division 2, Dave Gautier (exceptionally
good) won with a score of 36 points.
Division 3, Eddy Spong (v good) won with
27 points, winning on count-back from Rob
Jowett.
Nearest the Pin Winners:
Hole 2 Dave Pugh 9.2 metres
Hole 7 Fred Harvey 5.85 metres
Hole 9 Neil Macfarlane 12.5 metres
Hole 12 Alan Benton 7.56 metres
Hole 16 Dave Gautier 5.1 metres.
The Final Prize of the evening was a
free draw for all members attending the
Presentation Evening. A voucher, donated
in lieu of the Captains Green Fees, for a
round of golf plus buggy for two players
was won by Alan Benton.
Another brilliant day and yet another
excellent
presentation
evening
the
following night.
With the Death Star
destroyed, all Storm Troopers vanquished
and only a handful of members still
chewing baccy (get it?), this was another
great day for Los Amigos Golf Society
aka The New Republic.

Open Season!
The last 2 years have seen a distinct
change on the way clients book their
summer holidays and although we do take
bookings all year round, the 8 weeks of
July and August remain the peak weeks
for rentals.
