Back Stitch

A stitch made by inserting the needle at


the midpoint of a preceding stitch so that
the stitches overlap by half lengths on the
back of the fabric and appear continuo us
on the front.

Running Stitch
A simple needlework stitch consisting of a
line of small even stitches that run in and
out through the cloth without
overlapping.

Bullion Stitch
A decorative stitch in embroidery made
by winding the thread several times
around the needle before sewing a
backstitch. Similar to the French knot
forming very short bars.

Chain Stitch
Chain stitch is a sewing and embroidery
technique in which a series of looped
stitches form a chain-like pattern. An
ornamental stitch in which loops are
crocheted or embroidered in a chain.

Cross Stitch
Cross-stitch is a popular form of countedthread embroidery in which X-shaped
stitches in a tiled, raster-like pattern are
used to form a picture.

Feather Stitch
An embroidery stitch consisting of a line
of diagonal blanket stitches worked
alternately to the left and right. Made of
open, looped stitches worked alternately
to the right and left of a central rib.

Fish Bone Stitch


Fish bone stitch is a decorative stitch. It is
used for filling designs. This stitch is used
for making leaves and petals. Fish bone
stitch can also worked for making
decorative borders. Each stitch is worked
from outer edge to the center line.

French knot
A stitch in which the thread is wound
around the needle, which is then passed
back through the fabric at almost the
same point to form a small dot.

Herringbone Stitch

A cross-stitch with a pattern resembling


herringbone, used in embroidery or for
securing an edge.

Lazy Daisy Stitch


An embroidery stitch consisting of a long
chain stitch, usually used in making
flower patterns.

Looped Stitch
A method of sewing or knitting in which
each stitch incorporates a free loop of
thread for ornament or to give a thick

pile.

Satin Stitch
A long straight embroidery stitch, closely
placed parallel to similar stitches, giving
the appearance of satin.

Split Stitch
A stitch used in stem work to produce a
fine line, much used in old church
embroidery to work the hands and faces
of figures.

Seed Stitch
The Seed Stitch is a running stitch. It is
exactly the reverse of single darning in
that it is a short stitch on the upper side
and a long stitch underneath.
