FUN ACTIVITY - Milk Chemistry!

Make ice cream in a bag!

GET STARTED:

Investigate the changing states of matter, chemical

reactions, and the properties of ice and salt, and be
rewared with a delicious treat!
Youll need:
Get creative:
1 cup whole milk
You can mix in crushed
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
cookies, candies, nuts
2 tablespoons sugar
or berries!
4 cups crushed ice
1/4 cup rock salt
2 quart zip-top plastic bags
1 gallon zip-top plastic freezer bag

1. Put the milk, vanilla and

sugar (and any optional
ingredients) in the smaller
bag. Seal it tight and force
out any air.

2. Put the ice and salt

into the larger bag.
Place the smaller bag
inside of the larger bag
and seal carefully.

Whats actually happening:

In
step

The salt will begin to melt the ice

because salt lowers the freezing
point of water.

The shaking and kneading is ENERGY

and the heat transferred from your
hands causes the ice to melt further.

In
step

You may not think melting ice is as cold as

frozen ice, but remember, its mixed with
salt. As the melting ice combines with the
salt, the salt-water solution has a lower
freezing point than plain water which
makes the melted ice mixture actutally
colder than ice.

In
step

In
step

3. Gently shake the bag

making sure the ice is
evenly spread out.

4. Continue to gently shake

and knead the bag in your
hands for about 5-10
minutes until your milk
turns into ice cream.

5. Remove smaller bag,

rinse off the outside of
it, and enjoy!

In the beginning, the milk,

vanilla, and sugar was a liquid
mixture. Now, the mixture
turned into a solid. That is a
change in its state of matter!
