From Peter Jones:

You will no doubt remember in a recent newsletter we were delighted to

report that the Forest of Dean Environmental Services Department had awarded the Shop at
Bromsberrow a 5-Star rating for full compliance with health and Hygiene regulations. The volunteers
at the shop are very proud to have achieved this high standard and work hard to ensure these are
maintained. Checks are undertaken on a surprise basis by the Environmental Services to ensure the
standards are maintained and we are pleased to say that a recent random visit proved that our
volunteers are keeping up this valued 5 star rating. We have received a very satisfactory report and
this will be displayed in the shop for you all to see. It is very good to have confirmation that our
standards are first class and we will ensure this remains so for future requirements.

From our local Gardener: "Do you remember "Real" ginger beer? The sort of stuff your
grandmother used to make (though now made extremely well by companies such as Fentimens and
Fevertree). You probably thought that "Real" ginger beer was fermented with brewers yeasts
(Saccharomyces cerevisiae). Well, it isn't. It's made with jelly like biological clumps of
Saccharomyces florentinus (a type of yeast) and Lactobacillus hilgardii (a bacteria). Both have health
promoting properties. We will be selling cultures of the stuff with full instructions if there is sufficient
interest. (Its easy, all you need is a coffee jar, lemon or lime juice (or real lemon or lime), dried ginger
(fresh if you like), sugar, a strainer and fizzy drinks bottles)... simples!" Ginger Beer Plants are
available to order from The Shop at very reasonable prices.

We recommend tables are reserved for this popular event.

From Mavis: Hi Dot, I said, have you seen that those nice people from Marshalls Dry Cleaners are
offering Two for one cleaning on everything, indefinitely? Are they Mav? Indefinitely, eh? said
Dot. Yes two for one and indefinitely, and that means for a long time, as well Well Mav, now that
you arent cooking the books, you can launder the accounts! No, Dot, no! How many times have I
told you?! We arent allowed to cook the books or launder the figures! But we have a nice new

accountant and shes not going to do that either. (I explained, again) Honestly Dot you really should
get out more! (please, I thought!)

From Judith Britton: Bromsberrow Gardening and Social Club

Our meeting this month on a chilly evening was enriched by a visit from Duncan Coombes, a local
horticulturist and botanist. Duncan took us with the aid of a wonderful slide show to Japan. In
particular to the South Island where he had visited with his wife on a holiday in the cherry blossom
season. The holiday centred around visits to gardens, parks and even looking at the small immaculate
gardens of the householders. We noticed how pristine all the plants and hedges were camelias and
azaleas without a flower in sight! All clipped to perfection.
One garden of particular interest was the garden of the Imperial Palace in Kyoto. To visit this garden
they had to make an appointment. On the appointed day they were formally escorted by palace guards
around the garden. A memorable evening of blossoms, temples and a glimpse of another culture. The
next meeting is on Thursday 10th March at 7.30pm in Bromsberrow Village Hall. Chris Evans from
Dundry Nurseries in Cheltenham will be telling us about the work of the Butterfly Project based at his
nursery. Visitors and /or new members are very welcome.

Bromesberrow Laura Hankins, Headteacher: St. Marys Church of England School children have
been enjoying a glorious time up in our Forest School area. The children have been making homes for
animals, learning about habitats and exploring the natural world around them. Forest School sessions
provide a time for children to play and socialise in a relaxed setting, building on team work and all
those life skills that are so important.

We have recently been learning about Internet Safety and have enjoyed a visit from Gloucestershire
Safeguarding Childrens Board to help us, to help our children keep themselves safe online. This is
very important to ensure that modern age children are prepared and know how to use the internet
safely, as it is a wonderful tool, but as with everything, needs to be treated with respect!

A reminder: Our Outreach Post Office operates within the Shop from 10.00 until 12.00 each
Tuesday and Thursday, for all your usual post office services.
Ayot Antiques offer for sale a huge selection of furniture, glassware, pottery, ornaments and a
vast array of other items. Visit the Shop to view. A small deposit can secure items.
