Center Hill Marina is tucked away in a beauti-
ful cove. It has been a fixture on Center Hill
Lake for around fifty years. To compliment
the marina, they offer a lakeside restaurant;
the wonderful Coppertop “Floating” Restau-
rant. It has been serving vacationers, locals
and visitors for many years and offers excel-
lent food in a casual atmosphere. Restaurant
Manager Helen Maynard loves to tell about
the best hand breaded catfish on Center Hill
Lake and smiles when she talks about one of
the dinner favorites at the Coppertop Restau-
rant, the “Redneck Nachos”. The “Redneck
Nachos” are topped with hickory smoked bar-
becue, homemade barbecue sauce and salsa,
white beans, and mozzarella cheese to create
this delicious concoction. They are open dur-
ing season, from April through October, on the
weekends only. They have inside and outside
seating and the Sunday only breakfast buffet is
a lake favorite with all the wonderful breakfast
food - including made-to-order French toast.
Helen talks fondly of their homemade desserts
and says that the banana pudding is “to die for”.
Marina Manager Mistie Mauldin added that the
chocolate pie and the peanut butter fudge pie
are also irresistible. Come on down and enjoy

Cookeville Boat Dock is in fact a multi-gen-
erational family busi-
ness that has been
owned and operated
by the Nash family
since 1967. They are
located on the northern
shores of Center Hill Lake and close to one of
Tennessee’s favorite State Parks - Burgess Falls
State Park. Cookeville Boat Dock is known as
the water sport experts at Center Hill Lake of-
fering not only top brand merchandise such as
O’Brien, Ronix, Hyperlite, Surftech and others
at their Jet Ski/Pro Shop, but lessons, and expert
advice. In the summer of 2010, the Cookeville
Boat Dock will be offering a clinic on the water
where tips and advice will be given by the pros
- the manufacturers Ronix and Hyperlite. This
is being offered as a service to the customers
that have purchased these name brand water
toys from the Pro Shop. These toys have been

available at very competitive prices due to their

often find owner, Frida and her daughter Kim-
berly, mother-daughter duo surfing buddies,
enjoying the clear blue waters of Center Hill
Lake by wake surfing or knee boarding. They
can also be found out with the rest of the family
(including Frida’s son Carl and daughter Chris-
tina that are also heavily involved in the busi-
ness) tubing, boating or just enjoying the magic
of the lake. Like many generations of families,
Cookeville Boat Dock was the vacation desti-
nation of choice for Frida and her family since
her father loved fishing. It became their home
away from home during the summer creating
many fond memories. Frida met Reece Nash
and married into the family. She has enjoyed
and worked in the marina for many years and
still loves Center Hill Lake even though her
beloved Reece has since past away. The high
level of service expected by her family is one
of their signature traits. They pride themselves
on making the customer happy. With over 300
boat stalls, and some of the largest houseboat
slips on the lake, Cookeville Boat Dock can
moor your boat or rent you one of their excel-
lent Leisure Kraft pontoon or deck boats with
relative ease. The Lighthouse Restaurant at
Cookeville Boat Dock has the best hand-bread-
ed catfish in the world according to Frida. They
delight themselves on serving quality food with
amazing lake views and exceptional service.
They also offer daily specials, pizza, hamburg-
ers, and great sandwiches. The restaurant is
open seasonally from April through October,
seven days a week. On Sunday, they offer a
non-denominational church service at 8:30AM.
It is casual and all are welcome. Breakfast is
served afterwards and this is a great time to
give God glory and to enjoy the fellowship of
boaters and vacationers. Independence Day is
a real special day at Cookeville Boat Dock and
each year they offer a great celebration with
fireworks always held on the 4th of July. It is
extremely important to them to hold their event

will also offer a daily all you can eat catfish
buffet including their delicious hush puppies,
coleslaw, and of course - fresh catfish. The first
Friday of each month, The Galley offers their
all you can eat seafood buffet, which features
different types of fresh seafood each month.
The main item varies with such favorites as
blackened grouper, crab cakes, shrimp, catfish,
and so much more. Their new daily specials
offer southern home cooked fare with a meat
and two sides. The Galley is known for their
homemade desserts. Their signature dessert is
their variety of cheesecakes. The Galley also
offers entertainment on most Saturdays at their
expansive outdoor patio dining area, including
karaoke, live music, or picking and grinning.

tion as a “Clean Marina” by the Corps of Engi-
neers. This is a prestigious award on the lake.

Hidden Harbor Marina is another bona fide
family owned and op-
erated marina since
1989. Brian and Sta-
cey Leiser moved
from California thir-
teen years ago to join
in the family business, including children Sean,
Ryan, Samantha and Brandon. They all partici-
pate and love Center Hill Lake and the family
marina. The marina is tucked well away from
the hustle and bustle of the city. They pride
themselves on being very service oriented and
welcome every family that enters the marina
and campground for a memorable stay. The
Hidden Harbor Marina is nestled in the area of
Center Hill Lake formerly known as the Hol-
mes Recreation area. It offers shade trees, a
picnic area, forest, hillside fishing, and a great
campground which has 16 campsites with elec-
tric, water, and 9 rustic sites for tent camping.
They have four new, one bedroom cabins with a
queen size bed and a separate living room area
with all the amenities. These cabins are perfect
for a couple or a small family, or rent them all
for a family reunion or multi-family vacation.
Hidden Harbor Marina also offers new and

well maintained houseboats and newer Leisure
Kraft pontoon boats with 150 hp engines. They
will even meet you with their shuttle service at
your vehicle to offer transportation from your
car to your boat. The Leiser family will greet
you throughout the marina. At their Ship’s
Store, they offer fishing bait/tackle and sum-
mer items such as sun tan lotion, soda, camping
groceries, souvenirs or a loaf of bread. Stop
by and have an ice cream or order one of their
hamburgers with French fries as a way to cel-
ebrate summer at Center Hill Lake. They also
offer complimentary air for your water toys and
will help you blow them up! WI-FI is avail-
able at the dock, so if you must check emails,

Hurricane Marina is the granddaddy of the
marinas on Center
Hill Lake, the newest,
the largest, and where
the folks that want the
“wow” factor come to
visit from Nashville
and the surrounding counties. Hurricane Ma-
rina has spent the last few years turning Cen-
ter Hill’s oldest marina which sits in the lake’s
only natural harbor into the newest, largest,
state-of-the-art facility. They offer a variety of
services to enhance their client’s experience,
such as pontoon rentals, trash pick-up, courtesy
golf cart valet, catering, overnight dockage,
boat launch ($5 for non-members), free WI-FI
at the dock, 200 amp electrical hook-ups, free
sanitary pump-out, keypad accessible security
gate, not to mention their 24-hour fuel station
(which accepts all major credit cards), indoor
restrooms, superb dining area, well stocked
Ship’s Store, free parking, excellent lighting,
and private banquet and conference facilities.
Blue Water Grille has outstanding food and
offers dining from the end of March through
the end of the year with their awesome New
Year Eve’s celebration. One of the favorite
specials is held the last Friday of each month
– the shrimp boil where Manager Bill and Chef
Stephanie boil shrimp and supply you with all
the fixins! Events are big at Hurricane Marina,
including their huge 4th of July Celebration
with fireworks, live music, houseboat and boat
decorations, and loads of fun. Memorial Day
and Labor Day offer live music and plenty of
activities to keep the boaters entertained and
one of the stars is the official Hurricane Ma-
rina Corn Hole Tournament. This is a huge hit.

the south end of Cen-
ter Hill Lake. They
are pleased to an-
nounce that they are
in the process of do-
ing some major reno-
vations to modernize their facilities. New own-
ers/partners Steve and Leah Smith of Nashville
joined with James and Teresa Bradshaw, who
have owned the marina since 1999, to bring
about these wonderful improvements. These
complete renovations are going on all over the
marina. Slip owners, visitors, and vacationers
will be pleasantly surprised at the transforma-
tion of this beau ideal marina. Pates Ford Re-
sort and Marina is surrounded by coves and
free flowing waterfalls in this very pristine area
of Center Hill Lake. Steve and Leah have been
houseboating at Center Hill Lake for many
summers to achieve some rest and relaxation
from their businesses in Nashville (they own the
legendary Tootsie’s and other establishments).
They fell in love with the marina and decided
to go into partnership with James and Teresa.
Their vision and plans are amazing and the
brand new Ship’s Store displays some of this.
The Ship’s Store will offer marine supplies,
boating and houseboating accessories, fishing
supplies and tackle, live bait, soft drinks, beer,
ice cream, camping supplies, t-shirts, hoodies,
caps, souvenir items, hats, summer items, and
so much more. Pates Ford Resort and Marina’s
restaurant bar (the Captain’s Galley Restau-
rant) will also offer a new dining area (inside
and outside) with finger foods, hamburgers,
and sandwiches featuring delicious chicken,
fish, and succulent barbecue (their specialty is
barbecue ribs). They are now offering mixed
drinks, beer, and wine at the restaurant and will
offer weekend entertainment during the season.
The marina currently has 90 covered houseboat
slips, 140 ski boat slips, and is in the process
of building 50 new wakeboard and cruiser cov-
ered slips which are taller to accommodate the
heights of these popular boats. They have also
invested in a new fleet of ten pontoon boats that
have 90 HP engines plus sundecks and water
slides. What fun for a family outing or a tag-
along boat if you are houseboating with sev-
eral families for the week! Pates Ford Resort
and Marina pride themselves in customer ser-

instrumental in the development of the
Center Hill Dam, the Edgar Evins Park,
the Joe L. Evins Appalachian Center for
Craft, and many more programs in the region. This
state acclaimed park, with over 6,000 acres of developed and
undeveloped land, offers direct access to Center Hill Lake, with
year-round lakeside camping, hiking trails, fishing, hunting,
cabin rentals, and many picnic pavilions and shelter areas for
family reunions, group gatherings, vacationers, and day visitors.
The Friends of Edgar Evins State Park promote and support the
park with activities and projects that improve the facilities and
the experience of the visitor. Some of the annual activities that
the Edgar Evins State Park offer include pontoon rides, water-
fall tours, wildflower walks in the spring, bird watching and
trail building programs. One of the favorite fall activities is the
History Hayride which highlights the local history and special
characters of the region. The butterfly garden is a hit in mid
to late March along with the Waterfall Tour which is normally
scheduled for March. This tour offers rides on easy access, 15
passenger vans to visit many of the approximately 200 water-
falls within a couple of hours drive. Waterfalls in the Upper
Cumberland/Highland Rim area are spectacular in the spring,
when water cascades down through the geological wonders of
the terrain. The Edgar Evins Marina (www.edgarevinsmarina.

slips, and more. The Galley restaurant, located within the marina
(owned and operated separately) is a great place to dine. Try

with largemouth and smallmouth bass, Kentucky bass, Walleye,

system with six trails, from an easy trail of about 100 yards to a
5 ½ mile loop which is considered moderate to strenuous. Many
types of wildlife are accessible for viewing with beautiful spring
wildflowers and ferns along the trails. Bring your binoculars,
as whitetail deer, raccoons, squirrels, woodchucks, rabbits,

The heart of the Center Hill Lake region is the downtown area of
Smithville in DeKalb County, TN. Boy is there a lot to do in this vibrant
town and the surrounding area! Suzanne Williams, their passionate,

Smithville is conveniently located off of I-40 and Hwy. 56. It is easy
to get to the downtown area, where the City Hall, shops, antiques, gift
stores, restaurants and professional offices are located. Cantrell’s
Clothing and Fluty’s Shoes are owned and operated by the Cantrell
family. The clothing store is like those I remember from my childhood
(and most anyone born before 1980 can). It is loaded with the latest
fashions, full of style and the service is impeccable. Recently I bought a
red trench coat there and loved the help and advice given by Mr. and Mrs.
Cantrell. You can find a little bit of everything - from a special boating
outfit to a summer dress, or just about anything for a man, woman or
child. Make sure to take a look across the street at Fluty’s Shoes which
offers name brand athletic shoes, sandals, cowboy boots, hats, purses
and all the accessories. Smithville also has Tennessee’s oldest family-
owned pharmacy which is run by the Webb family. Webb’s Pharmacy &
Gifts has been in the family since 1881. There you can find their antique
pharmaceutical bottles and a really great gift shop. I found a great
selection of home furnishings, handcrafted pottery by Susan DeMay,
decorative plates and bowls for your lake cabin home or houseboat,
children’s toys including my favorite Melissa and Doug toys, an expansive
line of greeting cards, baby shower gifts, jewelry and so much more.
Make sure you stop in and see the Webb family and say “hello”. All this
shopping is sure to make you hungry, and two of our favorites are the

awesome homemade soups and desserts. My grilled chicken taco salad
was excellent and the homemade salsa which topped it off was superb.
Even though I shouldn’t have, my guest and I shared a slice of key lime
pie, and oh was it good. The Heartland Café is the newest sit down
eatery in downtown Smithville. It has a great, casual, fun atmosphere
with excellent barbecue, country cooking, burgers, sandwiches and daily
specials with wonderful southern hospitality. If you are in the mood
to relax and to be pampered….not a problem. The Smithville Square
has several full-service salons and specialized skin care experts to serve
you. Downtown Smithville can be reached by traveling west on Hwy.
70, turn right onto North Congress Blvd., then turn left at the red light
(West Main Street) and travel 1 block to the square. The two highlights
of the year in DeKalb County are the Smithville Fiddlers’ Jamboree &
Crafts Festival which always takes place the first Friday and Saturday in
July and the DeKalb County Fair in Alexandria. The Jamboree is a must
see if you love music, dance, and pure Appalachian crafts. Come see
what over 100,000 visitors from all around the world come to experience
annually.  The DeKalb County Fair has been known as the “Grandpa
Fair of the South” since 1856. The Award Winning DeKalb County Fair
showcases everything from beauty pageants to the best agricultural and

The Appalachian Center for Craft is a jewel in the Center Hill
Lake area. The campus sets upon over 500 acres of wooded land,
overlooking breathtaking Center Hill Lake. The Center offers a
top notch gallery, one of the finest in the southeast, displaying
over 100 plus regional artists’ traditional and fine art crafts. The
center also prides itself in offering up to twenty cutting-edge
exhibitions featuring a variety of fine craft and mixed media
work by regional, national and international artists in their
three exhibition galleries. Originally run by the Tennessee Arts
Commission, this nationally acclaimed
center became part of the Music and Art
Department of Tennessee Technological
University (TTU) in Cookeville as a
satellite campus in 1985. Currently,
they have about 135 students. Offering
Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees and Master
of Fine Art degrees, the Center offers
competitive resident artists programs
with instruction, housing and studio
space. The Center also offers non-degree
Craft Certificate programs in clay, fibers,
glass, metals, and wood that are open to

Now I, “Annie”, love art. I have since my years in Belgium and
Europe when I was introduced to contemporary art by my dear
friend Kathryn Feldman, a known artist in France and Belgium
who has been commissioned in France and has had her work
displayed in several galleries in France, Germany, and Belgium.
I was so excited to find such a wonderful gallery located so close
to the lake filled with the works of artists seemingly bursting from
the hills, valleys and towns of the Upper Cumberland. Artists
are literally coming out of the woodwork to showcase their work

also have a hiking trail at the Center.
William Stacey was a member of the
Craft Center’s Maintenance Staff over
a 17 year period; he loved to work on
the trail system. That trail system is
now open and dedicated to his memory.
There are 4 wonderful trails that range
in length from a 1.3 mile loop to a 3.7
mile round trip that is rated moderate to
difficult. The trails are beautiful in the
spring with the wildflowers and majestic
views of Center Hill Lake from the many overlooks. The Center
also has a coffee shop where you can enjoy coffee and a scone
or a bowl of soup and sandwich during the lunch hours. The
Craft Center has meeting space with a spacious conference room
available for meetings, events, and weddings. They also offer
a catering service available on-site. The gallery is open seven
days a week from 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM and also offers online

0 Stella Luna Art Gallery
Stella Luna Art Gallery is a star quality gallery that one would
expect to find in New York City or Los Angeles, not Smithville,
Tennessee. The love of the mountains, memories of Louis’
Granddad fishing and hunting in the Catskills of New York, and
their love of the simple life brought the Colombarinis to the
Upper Cumberland thirty years ago. While working with clay at
a ceramic class in Florida during their college years, the couple
fell in love. They were both passionate about clay and had similar
visions of the life that they would have. Louis and Christine set out
on a journey to find their perfect home during the late seventies.
They wanted a home that would also serve as their art studio and
give them the right energy and creativity. Traveling over 10,000
miles on a camping trip on a shoestring budget, they discovered
and took in the wonders of Northern California, Oregon and
states in between before falling in love with Tennessee. Settling
in the Upper Cumberland, they purchased a gorgeous 30 acre
plot of land with all the cash that they could get together. Then
they proceeded to learn the life of a sharecropper. They quickly
became educated as to what chiggers are, learned about the life of
a tobacco farmer, how to smoke ham, and grow a garden. They
were self sufficient, but realized that farming was not for them
full-time. Although they gained a great deal of experience and
learned from the adventure, this is not what they had in mind
long term. They settled for a wonderful piece of property and
home just outside of Smithville in the early 1980’s, which has
also become their studio. About eight years ago, Louis’ dream
of having a gallery was realized when he found the perfect house
which could be transformed into such a space; a place where their
master work and that of other artists from the region could be
displayed. The Stella Luna Art Gallery was born. There’s an
interesting explanation behind the choosing of the name “Stella
Luna”. Louis and Christine would love to share with you. When

For some time, Christine and Louis averaged doing about 12-
15 festivals a year and also wholesaled their work to different
galleries around the country. Today they limit their festival
participation, sell online, and still wholesale their work. They
pride themselves in crafting rare vessels in clay through processes
that no one else is using. Christine has been working with a
process of creating clay vessels and sculpted forms by working
with a primitive pit firing method using straw and sawdust. This
method creates grass patterns, fire clouds, and rich sepia tones.
Her work has brought her several awards. Louis started out with
a “Raku” style of work, but is currently working with a primitive
pit firing method using a copper wash. The results are fabulous.
This dynamic duo strives to bring the simplicity of clay to life
creating a perfect form with texture and color. Their methods and
techniques allow them to best highlight their artistry. This has
brought the honor of being designated as some of the top potters
in the United States. Their design and sculpting have allowed
them to fine tune their processes. Their passion is apparent
through the many objects on display in their gallery - especially
during one of their favorite events of the year, the “Off the Beaten
Path Studio Tour”. This fall tour spotlights several artists in the
Middle Tennessee area and winds along the scenic roads, across
creeks, and showcases some of the best artists and craftspeople
“at home” in their studios. Many of them are not only displaying
their work, but demonstrate during the event. If you love art, this
tour through the countryside is a must. Stella Luna Art Gallery is
the beginning point for the tour, and hosts Louis and Christine will
be happy to show you around, talk lovingly about their work, and

needed. I had the great pleasure of meeting with sculptor William
Kooienga and wife, Sharon, one beautiful Saturday morning (pic-
ture on right). Sharon is a very accomplished fiber artist weaving
with angora and mohair fibers, just to name a few. Her tapestry
work and rugs adorn their rustic home and bring color to their
living area. The Kooienga’s moved from Asheville, NC several
years ago and fell in love with the area, buying 100 plus acres.
They live simply on their expansive acreage, and have lovingly
built their log home of the trees from the forest around them.
They have a solar powered home with water from the creek that
lines their sprawling tree-lined gravel road. William’s expansive
studio where he sculpts wood and stone masterpieces overlooks
the home place. He has been commissioned to sculpt some fine
pieces and loves the creativity that he feels in his lovely environ-
ment. William also creates custom furniture, art pieces made out
of interesting lengths of wood that are found in their forest, and
other custom pieces which display his talent. The Off the Beaten
Path Studio Tour covers a wide realm of artists from potters, glass
blowers, furniture makers, quilters, jewelers, and wood turners.
The tour takes you through the beautiful back roads of Tennessee
and allows you to see the countryside at its best; showcasing the
vibrant autumn colors and wonderful aromas of the season. Being
able to see the artists at work in their studio is so interesting and
one can learn so much about their particular style of work and
wonderful personalities along the way. One artist, Tim Hintz,
has been constructing ladder-back chairs for many years and is a
former Tennessee Arts Commission fellow. Tim’s award winning
work has been showcased at many festivals and events across
the country. Folks from all over have ordered these top quality
chairs. He starts with the highest quality middle Tennessee red
oak and collects his own hickory bark for the woven seats. You
could say that his chairs are ergonomically designed, as the back
posts are steam-bent to give a supportive curve. If you have a

Defeated Creek Marina is a charming,
friendly, family owned marina situated
in a north branch of the Cumberland

River near the Smith and Jackson County
lines. The creek took its name from a
battle defeat in 1786 between John Peyton
and his party against the Indians and it
is part of Cordell Hull Lake. Cordell
Hull Lake is about 64 miles long with
300 miles of shoreline, and was named
after Cordell Hull, Father of the United
Nations and longest-serving Secretary of
State (holding the position for 11 years
(1933-1944) during the administration of
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and
received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1945
for his role in establishing the United
Nations). This Corps of Engineers Lake
is beautiful and known for its striped and
rock bass. It is the last lock before you get
to the Great Loop whose waterways can
take you to the Gulf of Mexico or north
into the Great Lakes. Allen and Carolyn
Vires got tired of corporate America and
decided to take a leap of faith and embark
on another business or a marina. They
found Defeated Creek Marina online,
bought the marina, and moved from the
great north of Minnesota in 2004. They
have loved every minute of it and really
enjoy the friendly people, the temperate
winters, the beautiful warm summers, and
the opportunity to make family vacations
extra memorable with their great service.
They rent cabins, pontoons and ski boats
with ideal set up with Defeated Creek
Campground adjacent to the marina. The
campground has 156 campsites, a great
swimming area, picnic shelters, tennis and
volleyball courts, mountain biking, and
a fantastic moderate hiking trail named
Bearwaller Gap and is about 6.2 miles
long each way and hugs the mountainside
offering some stunning views of Cordell
Hull Lake. Defeated Creek Marina has
about 40 acres to roam. There is really
something different to do everyday. The
marina is also home to several sailboats
which you can often see sailing in the
clear blue waters. Customer service is
important to Allen and Carolyn. The Ship’s
Store offers hand-dipped ice cream cones,
camping supplies, firewood, beverages
(soft and hard), souvenirs, fishing bait/
tackle, and licenses. The marina is very
kid friendly and Carolyn loves to have the
children color a page for the “wall” which
is adorned with their masterpieces. Cordell
Hull Lake has great fishing for striped and
rock bass and one of the favorite pastimes
for the local (and visiting) fishermen is

Defeated Creek Marina’s Thursday night
tournament which takes place from 4:00
PM until dark. The costs are $25.00 (2 man
buddy) and a $5.00 annual club/member
fee. They average about 25-30 boats and
at the end of the season, they award prizes.
This is a great way to build friendships
with local fishermen, plus enjoy the lake
throughout the year. Creekview Café
offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They
are known for their delicious catfish
served with homemade jalapeno hush
puppies, and a mouth watering burger
called a marine burger which is a half
pound of fresh ground beef hand formed
into a patty with grilled green peppers,
onions, mushrooms, and Swiss cheese.
There is always something cooking at
their restaurant. Folks come from all
over the area to have breakfast, a meal
after church, or anytime to enjoy the great
food and the beautiful lake views from the
restaurant or their outside dining patio.

Granville Marina & Café is a wonderful
marina situated on the banks of the
Cumberland River and Cordell Hull Lake.
It is a stop off point for many that are
traveling the waterways from north to
south with destinations such as Nashville
or the Gulf of Mexico. Mr. Herb Rock,
a successful businessman from Nashville,
had a chance to retire early. He and his
wife fell in love with Granville and needed
something to do. This old fisherman’s

slips and many new 60’ plus slips, 24

River is 381 miles long and very deep
(in some place over 50’). Several people
cruise the river. It is one of the side trips
for boaters doing the Great Loop with
visits to Nashville and Cordell Hull Lake
- known as the Little Switzerland. The
Nashville Yacht Club has been traveling
the river to Granville Marina & Café the
last few years for their annual meeting
and enjoy the hospitality, good food, and
wonderful marina to host them. River
life is wonderful as many hop from one
town to another by the waterways and
experience the different towns, restaurants,
and history along the route. Granville
Marina & Café has also renovated and
upgraded their fisherman’s restaurant
to offer scenic views of the river with a
lunch and supper menu. Boat owners and
visitors alike enjoy the wonderful selection
which includes favorites such as walnut
encrusted grouper, hand patted burgers,
wonderful catfish, and homemade potato
salad. They pride themselves in preparing

frozen. This has become a great stop off
point for bikers traveling down scenic Hwy.

Prime Time at the “Lick” in Flynn’s Lick
is at Clipper’s - the place to be on the
1st Saturday of the month for Prime Rib,
delectable Shrimp Chowder, and live
music. Fred and JoAnn Campbell wanted
to combine their love of cooking, JoAnn’s
career as a stylist for 37 years, and
meeting people in the Jackson County
area, so they bought a convenience store
between Granville and Gainesboro.
They named their place Clipper’s, which
serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. It has
evolved into THE gathering place. This
meeting place for newcomers and locals
alike is an important spot to catch up
on the morning news and gossip, drink
a cup of coffee, and savor a delicious
breakfast or a fantastic meal any day of
the week. However, that 1st Saturday
night of the month is extra special with
some great entertainment. The menu at
Clipper’s in Flynn’s Lick offers breakfast,
Panini sandwiches, daily specials, and
their famous Freddie Burgers - which
is a half pound of hamburger steak with
all the fixings. JoAnn still cuts hair for
her regulars in the back. Many come
by to have a haircut and lunch, then go
on their way or back to work for the
rest of the day. Clipper’s also offers a
book exchange, movie rental, and WI-
FI for those needing to get online. This
is a family friendly place. The music
has evolved from someone picking on
a Saturday night to a full fledged stage
in the back with seating, lawn chairs,
and a bonfire. Come over to Clipper’s
at Flynn’s Lick and have some fun,
meet some new people, and listen to
some music during the Saturday night

One of my favorite day trips while visiting the Center Hill Lake region
is to a quaint, lovingly restored town called Granville which is located
about 30 miles north of the Smithville area. Granville is a vibrant old
riverboat town that sits beside another small lake - Cordell Hull Lake.
Their wealth of history is showcased in a small museum which is staffed
by local folks that love to share the history of Granville. Back in its
heyday, Granville was a bustling riverboat town consisting of over 600
families, who made their living off of the
fertile land, the riverboat trade, and local
commerce. Today, it has been revitalized by
numerous volunteers and families that have
come back to their roots following careers in
larger metropolitan areas. One such couple
is a prominent, yet humble businessman and
his wife, Mr. Randall and Peggy Clemons.
The heartbeat of the community is the T.B.
Sutton Store (931.653.4151) which serves as
the general store, selling clothing, gift items,
candies, and books. It also showcases the
Upper Cumberland Arts Alliance (UCAA)
artists’ work in the gallery upstairs. One
of the biggest draws is their Saturday night
bluegrass, folk, and country music performances which generally feature
local musicians, yet occasionally spotlight headliners out of Nashville.
This coupled with their family style, down home country meals make
this is a great evening out for friends, families, and groups. The word
is getting out about Granville’s “Corner Stage” and reservations are
recommended to enjoy this excellent evening of music and delicious
home cooking in this great resort town. Granville has many festivals

throughout the year, including their Heritage Days in May and bluegrass
festival in the summer. Folks from all around come out to enjoy this
friendly river town, stay at one of the quaint bed and breakfasts available
or down at Granville Marina & Café or Defeated Creek Marina in one
of their cabins or campground. There are several gift stores, including
the Granville Gifts and Bed & Breakfast, located nearby the granddaddy,
the old T.B. Sutton Store. On one occasion while visiting the old general
store, we had the pleasure of observing Mr.
David Sharp practicing his wood crafting
skills for those that stopped by. He does
a beautiful job. The Granville Museum
showcases the history of this remarkable
town. In October, you can enjoy the
Journey Stories Exhibit, which celebrates
its grand opening on October 2nd at 10:00
a.m. as part of a special ceremony during
the Granville Fall Celebration. Journey
Stories is a Museum on Main Street project
organized by the Smithsonian Institution
Traveling Exhibition Service.  This unique
exhibit tells the story of courage, new
beginnings, adventure, fun and freedom
that has happened since the discovery of America.  Many expeditions
have taken place since that time ranging from the movements of the
first settlers, the Gold Rush, advent of different modes of transportation,
to those brought on by vacations, the search for freedom, and much
more. The exhibit will be open Wednesday through Saturday, from 12:00
