1. Introduction
Welcome to CivilFEM Installation Guide. User will find below step-by-step instructions to
install CivilFEM Beta Student which is the main program and then Marc software, needed for
meshing and solving.
There are two different programs with their own installation process.
A typical installation on a Windows machine (choosing the default installation directory)
installs the CivilFEM Beta Student in \Program Files\CivilFEM and Marc in \MSC.Software,
located on the same drive as the operating system.
The academic license for this product is valid for approximately 2 years from the installation
date.
This version should only be used for academic work.
The student version is designed for small, academic simulation only; there is a limit of 2000
nodes and 1000 elements (200 beam elements) in the model.

Additional Requirements

In order to install, you must have administrators privileges.

It is advisable to have a 3D graphic card with updated OpenGL drivers.
Internet connection for software updates.
3 GB space is needed in the hard disk (500 MB for CivilFEM and 2.5 GB for Marc).
A minimum of 1GB of RAM is needed to run this version.

3. Installation of Marc Student Edition

To run CivilFEM, Marc 2014.0 Student Edition (MSC. Software) must be installed (any other
version of Marc Mentat also works but this version is recommended). To get Marc 2014
Student edition please follow the below instructions.

3.1.

Download Marc Student Edition

Get the UNED ID card within the General Content Virtual Classroom:
Masters general contents > Homepage > Software Installation Guides > Obtain the
UNED's ID Card
Visit MSC.Software Academia webpage:
http://www.mscsoftware.com/student-editions
Click on Download Now

Being a new user, student must register first. Click on REGISTER.

Fill in the registration form. All (*) fields are mandatory.

Before clicking on REGISTER do not forget to include your UNED ID:

If student have entered a valid email account, a confirmation message will be sent.

Visit again MSC.Software Academia webpage:

http://www.mscsoftware.com/student-editions
And enter login and password:

A list of available MSC.Software products is shown. Select Marc Student Edition (v.
2014) files.
Depending on operating system download Marc Student Edition 2014 32bit version:
(marc_se_2014_windows32.exe)
or 64bit version: (marc_se_2014_windows64.exe).

3.2.

Install Marc Student Edition

Once the installer is completely downloaded run the InstallShield Wizard which will guide
you through the rest of the setup process.
Click Next and accept the Student Edition License Agreement.

Leave default Destination Folder or choose a new one. Then click Next.

Click Yes to set default solver to Integer*8 version.

Once the installation procedure has finished start with CivilFEM Student installation.

4. Installation of CivilFEM 2015 Beta

Please download from the following link:
http://files.unedfemmasters.com/Master2015/Software/CivilFEM_2015_Beta.exe
and then run the installation file CivilFEM 2015 Beta.exe
a) Begin installation and click Next.

b) Accept the License Agreement and click Next.

c) Select a setup file: Complete (full components installed), Custom (options for
installation folder and include or not software documentation will appear), Minimal
install only program and licensing) and Server (only licensing for server machines).
Then click Next.

d) Click Install to begin the installation.

e) Wait until installation progress finishes.

f) When installation is complete click Finish.

5. CivilFEM Configuration Options

Now CivilFEM can be launched and some configuration options must be set before getting
started.

5.1.

License

Go to Home\Program Files\CivilFEM 2015 Beta and open the application.

Leave default values (Server = localhost; Port = 1947; Product = Student) if you are using the
Student version and click Accept.

5.2.

Solver

Set the folder path of Marc solver executable file. Please follow these steps:
a) Launch CivilFEM 2015 Beta

b) Click on CivilFEM button

(top left corner) and then Options

c) Click the Configuration tab and then enter the correct path of Marc installation
folder and select the solver executable file run_marc.bat.

By default, the path for a 64bit machine is as follows (depends on the destination
folder):
C:\MSC.Software\Marc_Student_Edition\2014.0.0\marc2014\tools\run_marc.bat

5.3.

Mesher engine

Set the folder path of Mentat mesher executable file. Please follow previous a) to d) steps
for setting the solver path:
a) Please follow the steps described previously from 5.2a) to 5.1d)
b) Then enter the correct path of Marc installation folder and select the mesher
executable file mentatOGL.exe.
By default, the path for a 64bit machine is as follows (depends on the destination
folder):

C:\MSC.Software\Marc_Student_Edition\2014.0.0\mentat2014\bin\win64\mentat
OGL.exe

c) Click OK to finish. CivilFEM is ready to run an analysis!
