INTRODUCTION
Today, more than ever before, it is important to match your services and products to the
needs of your customer. As the business environment becomes increasingly
competitive, customers are more and more demanding where quality is concerned.
Therefore the adoption of a Quality Management System (QMS) should be a strategic
decision by an organization to ensure delivery of service and/or product to the
customers specification.

2.

THE ISO 9000 SERIES OF QUALITY MANAGEMENT STANDARDS

ISO 9000 series of Standards on Quality Management (see Appendix 1) were
developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Over 1 million
companies worldwide have been registered as meeting the requirements of the
certification standard ISO 9001. The organizations range from large multinationals to
single employee companies in manufacturing and service sectors as well as private and
public sectors. The vast majority of these companies report improved internal
operational efficiencies, enhanced customer satisfaction and consistency and
predictability of the operations.
The latest revision of the certification standard is the 2008 edition in which organizations
are to ISO 9001:2008: -Quality Management System Requirements. The standard
places emphasis on customer satisfaction and uses the process approach as a means
to continual improvement of the Quality system. The standard addresses all activities of
the company including the role of the Top Management in the Quality Management
System. Adequate resources must be provided to implement and maintain the system.
Once implemented the Quality System becomes an effective management tool giving
the company the benefits listed in (3) below.
