Description

Basic selection criteria

5.1. General
Refer to GP 06-31.
Two distinct types of cathodic protection
systems exist; these being:

Galvanic (sacrificial) anode systems.

Impressed current systems.

Galvanic systems provide cathodic

protection current by the preferential
corrosion of the anode alloy, which is more
electronegative in the galvanic series with
respect to the carbon-steel (C-steel)
structure to be protected (the cathode).
Anodes are usually directly attached to the
C-steel structure with an electrically
continuous mechanical connection, such as
a bolt or weld.
Impressed current systems use inert, noncorroding anodes. As the anodes are inert
and do not provide their own protection
current through corrosion of the alloy, an
external d.c. power source is required. As
anodes are not directly connected to the
structure, external cabling is required to
complete the electrical circuit between
anode, cathode and external power source.
5.2. Galvanic (sacrificial) systems
5.2.1. General

a.
There are basically three main
options that shall be considered for use
in galvanic cathodic protection systems.
These being:
1.

Aluminium.

2.

Magnesium.

3.

Zinc (secondary alternative to

aluminium and magnesium).

b.

Galvanic systems should be

Description

provided for systems in which life

spans of 5 10 years are required for
onshore structures, and between 20
30 years for offshore structures.
5.2.2. Aluminium

a.
Aluminium anodes should be
primarily considered for aqueous and
offshore applications.

5.2.2.N/A

5.2.2 In this project aluminium

anodes are not designed
and used.

b.
Aluminium anodes shall not be
used for potable water storage
applications due to the toxic nature of
the corrosion products.
c.
Aluminium anodes may be
considered for use in onshore buried
and freshwater applications if water
resistivity does not exceed 10 -m
(33 -ft), as passivation is likely to
occur beyond this value.
5.2.3. Magnesium

a.
Magnesium anodes should
predominately be considered for buried
onshore applications and also for nonsaline aqueous applications in which
resistivity is between 5 150 -m (16
490 -ft).
Note Due to the self-corrosive
nature of magnesium, a
practical anode life of
between 10 12 years is
likely regardless of
theoretical anode mass
calculation.
b.
For resistivity below 5 -m
(16 -ft), alternative alloys such as
aluminium and zinc should be
considered.
Magnesium anode alloys are available in
two grades which give two distinct output
potentials.
c.
Anodes should be pre-packaged
in cotton bags containing moisture
retentive, low resistivity back fill,
containing hydrated gypsum, bentonite,
and sodium sulphate.

Description

5.2.4. Zinc

a.
Zinc anodes may be considered
as a secondary alternative to Aluminium
and Magnesium if their individual
limitations for use may preclude them
for selection. Zinc anodes may be used
for aqueous and offshore applications,
although they may be used in buried
applications if conditions are suitable
subject to their limitations.
b.
Zinc anodes should not be used if
water resistivity exceeds 30 -m
(100 -ft), and shall not be used in
environments in which operating
temperature will exceed 50C (122F).

5.2.4.b Y

Zinc anodes are not subject to a minimum

resistivity value restriction.
5.3. Impressed current systems
5.3.1. General

a.
The following anode materials
shall be considered for use in impressed
current cathodic protection systems:
1.

Mixed metal oxide (MMO) on

titanium substrate.

2.

Silicon iron with chrome addition.

3.

Other alternatives to MMO and

silicon iron anodes (rarely used).

5.3.1 Y

b.
Unlike galvanic anodes, external
power is provided to the impressed
current anode, and hence they may
operate in much higher electrolyte
resistivity (approx. 500 1 000 -m
(1 640 3 280 -ft)), the limiting
factor being the driving voltage of the
external power supply and the overall
circuit resistance.
c.
For buried applications, the
anodes should be surrounded with a low
resistivity carbonaceous backfill either
contained within a C-steel canister or
loose filled around the anode within its
excavated hole.
d.
Relevant specifications are given
in clause A.2.1 A.2.2 for MMO and

silicon iron anodes.

5.3.2. Mixed metal oxide (MMO) on titanium
substrate

a.
MMO anodes should be chosen,
as they are technically superior and
cheaper to install than the other
commonly used impressed current
anodes in most applications.
MMO anodes are predominately used in
onshore applications, in both aqueous and
buried environments; however, MMO anodes
are commonly found on ships cathodic
protection systems.
MMO anodes have proven performance with
over twenty years experience operating at
very high current densities and in extreme
conditions.
In comparison with silicon iron, MMO
anodes are:

Lighter (a typical 5 Amps MMO anode

weighs less than 1 kg (2,2 lb) compared
with up to 50 kg (110 lb) for an
equivalent solid silicon iron anode).
Cheaper and easier to transport and
install (due to weight saving).
Not prone to long term cable breakage
(due to lower weight).
Not easily broken (Silicon iron anodes
are brittle and prone to breakage).
Not prone to end effect wastage.
Not subject to high consumption rates.
Typical anode consumption rates are as
follows:
MMO 0,000 5 kg/amp-year
(0,001 lb/amp-year).
Silicon iron with chrome 0,45 kg/ampyear (1 lb/amp-year).

These figures must be taken into account

when calculating minimum anode mass
required for the project assigned design life,
particularly with respect to silicon iron
anodes. It is however common practice to
include an additional contingency of 25% to
overall current demand over the minimum
theoretical value.

5.3.2 b Y

Description

b.
MMO anodes shall not be used in
environments containing the halides of
bromine, fluorine, or iodine as these are
detrimental to the operation of the
anode and may lead to premature
failure.
5.3.3. Silicon iron with chrome addition

Silicon iron anodes should be considered as a

secondary alternative choice to MMO but
limitations to the points raised above.
Silicon iron anodes have been the traditional
choice since the inception of the impressed
current system in the 1940s.
5.3.4. Alternatives to MMO and silicon iron
anodes

Guidance should be sought from EPTG

whenever projects/operations consider
utilising these anodes.
Other impressed current anode types such as
graphite, magnetite, and platinised titanium
may also be encountered, but are rarely
used. MMO and silicon iron anodes are most
common to the industry and have a more
diverse application range.
Platinised titanium is basically used for
aqueous applications.
Magnetite and graphite anodes are used for
buried onshore applications only, and suffer
many of the disadvantages of silicon iron
due to their similar brittle nature.

6.

Initial market review

Specifying engineers are responsible for
ensuring market reviews are undertaken for
goods or services in their specific areas of
responsibility.
a.
PSCM should be consulted
before undertaking market reviews and
under most circumstances the
expectation is that the specifying
engineers will work closely with PSCM
for the conduct of market reviews.
Once the main functional and technical
requirements are known for critical

Description

equipment it is necessary to determine

whether suitable equipment provision
already exists and whether it can be supplied
or supported locally. There is no process
associated with the initial market review,
which simply involves informal contact with
potential vendors.
b.
In addition to the information
available from vendors, similar projects
should be reviewed, BP (or designated
agent) should be consulted, and external
databases on equipment performance
should be reviewed.
c.
As well as identifying potential
vendors, the market review should
determine whether the functional and
technical requirements could be met
with:
1.

Standard-design this is
equipment that is already in use
and has an established
performance record.

2.

Modified-design this is standard

design equipment with a limited
number of project specific
modifications.

3.

New-design this is required if

standard equipment cannot be
modified or upgraded and new
equipment/service is required
specifically for the project.

For standard-design and modified-design

equipment, the expected output at this stage

potentially suitable equipment that has
already been supplied to, or proposed for,
other projects. If a new-design is required,
the expected output is a conceptual design
that could be developed and supplied within
the time frame available.
Based on findings during the market review,
the bidders or sole source (as applicable)
will be identified.

SWITCHES AND DATALOGGERS

Potential measurement survey of buried pipeline

As per assigned project specification
As per assigned project specification
As per assigned project specification
Potential measurement survey equipment
Maximum time error of 20 ms between any two switches during ON or
OFF readings at the determined switching interval.
Data loggers are similarly synchronised to switches and to each other with a
maximum time error between any 2 data loggers or any data logger and any
switch of 20 ms and that measurements of Instant OFF pipe/soil potentials
are undertaken between 100 ms 500 ms 20 ms of switching OFF; ON
potentials are measured at the end of the ON period 100 ms 20 ms before
switching OFF. The synchronisation accuracy of all data loggers and
switches shall be maintained within 20 ms, one to another, or 10 ms to
absolute time, throughout all survey work.
The synchronisation between all switches and data loggers to 20 ms (or
each unit to 10 ms to absolute time) at all times during survey operations
may be achieved by using GPS time signals, radio time signals, or crystal
oscillator clock systems of sufficient reliability and accuracy to meet the
requirement at all times during the survey.
If the synchronisation relies upon GPS or radio signals that can be interrupted
or if the signals from which may be shielded in particular localities, the
switches and data loggers shall be able to maintain their synchronisation
accuracy to within 20 ms between all units for a minimum of 8 hours without
receipt of any time signal from GPS or radio network.
The synchronisation of switches and data loggers shall be demonstrated at
the commencement and end of survey work each day by the use of
oscilloscope or suitable data logger able to display 0,5 V to 2,5 V with a
discrimination of 1 mV or better and a time discrimination of 1 ms or better
All switches and data loggers shall be conclusively proven to be operating
within the synchronisation accuracy of 20 ms between units. If any units are
out with this synchronisation limit, any survey work undertaken since the
previous successful synchronisation check shall be repeated with fully
synchronised equipment and the unit(s) that were out with the synchronisation
limits shall be quarantined and not used in the survey until proven to be
rectified/operating within the 20 ms unit to unit limit.

SPECIFICATIONS

A.9.4.

Designs of reference electrode, which utilise copper sulphate gel such as the
types designed for permanent installation, shall not be used for CIP surveys,
and should be of saturated Copper/ Copper Sulphate solution in
demineralised water.
The measurement shall be by a recording digital voltmeter (data logger) with
the following minimum characteristics:
Minimum of 1 independent channel, measuring simultaneously, with
measurement time and period able to be synchronised to 10 ms with other
data loggers and switches stable for a minimum of 24 hours within 10 ms.
Measurement range 3,5 V minimum with a sensitivity of 1 mV or better and
an accuracy of 0,25% of the measured value.
Each channel, balanced input. Common mode noise rejection > 75 dB for d.c.
inputs, > 100 dB for a.c. inputs 50-60 Hz. Normal mode noise rejection
> 60 dB for a.c. inputs 50-60 Hz up to 10 V.
Input impedance 10 M or greater
Measurement period, minimum 200 ms commencing a minimum 100 ms after
synchronised switch OFF. Period after switch OFF adjustable over the range
of at least 100 to 500 ms. The collection of many measurements with a
measurement period (count period) of less than 100 ms and then selecting the
least negative (or the second least negative or some other non-synchronised
selection) as representing Instant OFF shall not be permitted.
Real time measurement to 1 second accuracy (maintaining 10 ms
synchronisation), each voltage data set to incorporate time.
Feature codes (e.g. to represent roads, test points, etc) to be able to be
entered at the data logger, during voltage measurement, and to be
incorporated into the voltage data
To facilitate analysis of the CIPS data, pipe/soil potential data from a static
location, normally at the start of the survey section, is required for pipeline
surveys by using an additional data logger positioned at the static location. It
is essential that the static data can be accurately linked to the moving data;
this is best achieved using the time signal from GPS.
