EXPERIMENT NO.4
TITLE:
Torsion Test.
AIM:To conduct a torsion test on a circular bar.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. To learn how to conduct Torsion test on a material.
2. To learn how to determine modulus of rigidity of a given material by torsion test.
EQUIPMENTS REQUIRED:
Torsion testing machine.
THEORY:
Testing of round circular samples is another method of determining a
basic engineering relationship in structural materials. Unlike tensile testing,
torsional tests are not complicated by the phenomenon of necking and
reduction in areas.
A simple torsion test is relatively easy to perform, the angle of twist is
increased at a constant rate and the corresponding torque is measured at
predetermined increments. These values can be graphed to find a number of
engineering values. As in a tensile test, there will be an elastic or linear
portion of the curve where a proportional relationship can be used to
determine engineering values. In a Torque vs. Angle of twist relationship, the
value that will be determined is the modulus of rigidity, also known as the
shear modulus. By using the polar moment of inertia and a specific length of
shaft, the torque and angle of twist can be used to determine the shear
modulus using the following relationship
= TL/JG
where T is the applied torque
L is the length of the sample being tested
J is the polar moment of inertia
G is the shear modulus
is the angle of rotation within the tested length.
SPECIMEN:
The specimen is prepared of 20 mm diameter and 150 mm length of MS material.
PROCEDURE:
1) The dimension of the specimen is noted down.
2) The position of jockey weight is so adjusted that the zeros of main scale and vernier scale
coincides. The position of the counter weight is so adjusted that tip of the pointer on the lever
coincides with tip of fixed pointer.
3) The specimen is placed in position and held tight by turning the straining wheel

4) The specimen is twisted through certain angle and torque is noted

5) Similarly note down the several readings of angle of twist and corresponding torque till the
failure.
OBSERVATIONS:
Half degree = 60 Kg.cm
OSERVATION TABLE:

CALCULATION:
1. G = TL/J
2. Shear strain = R/L
3. Shear stress = TR/J
RESULT:
Modulus of rigidity for mild steel = ..
GRAPHS:
Shear stress vs Shrear strain.
Torque vs angle of twist.
CONCLUSION:
Thus we have conducted a torsion test on a given specimen and determined modulus of
rigidity of a material and compared it with standard value.
