Whole School
What a Showcase!

Did you see the MYP Personal Project Showcase at school on Monday? It was incredible! Our grade 10 MYP
students proudly displayed the results of their hard work on a project that was personal to them that tied in with
their learning in the MYP. Students displayed novels, movies, music, photography, fashion design, artwork,
videos, and so much more. They shared about the camps they led, events they conducted, service campaigns
they organized and physical activities they completed. It was amazing! What was just as amazing was the
passion that each student had for their personal project and the students ability to reflect on what they had
learned through the process and what skills they developed.
Why are culminating activities like the MYP personal project so important for a students learning? A culminating
project, such as the MYP personal project, provides an opportunity for a student to explore a topic of personal
interest. By completing the project, students have a real life experience that can help them as they move forward
in life. Through the process, students gain a number of important skills such as leadership, communication,
project management, time management, group skills, research skills, public speaking, presentation skills and selfmotivation. One of the major advantages of this type of project work is that it makes school more like real life.
What students choose to study for their inquiry is a real-world topic worthy of their attention and effort. As a
result, students learn to take responsibility for their own learning and develop the skills necessary to be life-long
reflective learners. What a great outcome!
A hearty congratulations to all grade 10 students! Bravo! Way to go Bears!

Head Lice Reminder

With all of the travel that students do throughout the year and overnight trips that
students attend, it is important to remember to check your child for Lice.
Lice does not transmit disease nor does it mean that a child is unclean. It is
important to understand what head lice is and how to treat it to prevent
infestations from re-occurring.
What is head lice?
Small, wingless insects that live on human hair and feed on human blood to survive
Do not have wings or jumping legs so they CANNOT fly or jump
People get lice from direct hair-to-hair contact
Lay eggs called nits within 1.5cm of scalp

Nits are small, white, and shaped like a sesame seed

Stick to hair and difficult to pull off; do not brush away like dandruff

Commonly found behind ears and the nape of the neck

How to FIND head lice:
Many lice may not cause itching at first; careful inspection is the best way to find
Wet combing is best because it can slow down the lice and make them easier to catch

In a well-lit room, apply hair conditioner onto dry, detangled hair

Comb small sections of hair with a fine-tooth or head lice comb

Wipe conditioner from comb onto paper towel or tissue

Look on tissue and comb for lice and eggs

Repeat combing all over head for at least five minutes

If lice or eggs are found, the hair should be treated

How to TREAT head lice:
Treatment should begin immediately when head lice are found
Purchase lice treatment shampoo called Licend () or Ezabri()at a local pharmacy
Use on dry hair for a full 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
Treatment only kills live lice, so nits must be manually removed.
After one treatment, student may return to school but is required to be checked in nurses office that day
Removal of nits must be done every day for two weeks after 1st treatment via wet combing or with fingers
2nd treatment is done 7-10 days (no earlier as shampoo is very strong) after 1st treatment
Two treatments and follow-up checks with nit removal is the best way to make sure lice are gone
Things to remember:
Tie hair back or braid to reduce transmitting
Minimize sharing of childs hats, hair brushes, clothing, and other objects
Check other family members when an infestation occurs

British Embassy Warden Training

Wardens are volunteers working to assist British Nationals. Recently, Kevin Smith (warden for Busan) attended a
meeting/training session with the wardens in Korea led by Graham Nelson, HM Consul from Tokyo and Michael
Kim, Honorary Consul in Busan.
The meeting focused on the Crisis Hub, which is the FCO's consular crisis IT system designed to make it easier to
support British Nationals affected by a crisis overseas.
All British nationals are encouraged to subscribe to Travel Advice which will automatically inform nationals about
any crisis that may occur. This can be accessed at https://www.gov.uk/government/world/south-korea. Brits are
also encouraged to join the embassy on Facebook (www.facebook.com/ukinrok) and Twitter (@UKinKorea) for
regular updates. Please pass on these details to any relevant British contacts and networks.

Visual Arts in the PYP

The visual arts program in the Elementary emphasizes developing a deeper understanding of the elements of
art and principles of design. Students focus on ideas and themes, use a variety of media, and plan and execute
how their ideas are communicated to a larger audience. Ongoing reflection and responses to other peoples
artwork are given equal importance. To promote the arts program to a wider community, our students' artworks
have been used for various exhibits around BIFS, the Busan community, and internationally.
This year we are proud to represent South Korea once again and have two grade 5 students art works selected
to be incorporated into the Schools' International Peace Quilt. Congratulations to Fiona Wilson and Isabella
Seidenfaden for the selection of their designs!
We invite families to take a gallery walk of the elementary school hallways, where you will find a selection of
semi-permanent artworks. These are individual and collaborative pieces from Mr. Quimpos art classes over the
past several years, and they represent the elements of art and design principles mentioned above. More
artworks and what the students are doing in the art room can be seen at
<http://bifselementaryart.weebly.com/>. We are proud to feature our students creativity throughout the
school!

of this camp is to provide an opportunity for your child to improve their basketball skills by taking part in drills
and games. The day will certainly be fun for everyone involved.

at 10:00 AM and the will end at 2:00 PM. Transportation to and from the camp are the responsibility of the

MS Ski Trip

This past weekend, 30 middle school students traveled to Phoenix Park Ski Area to learn to ski and snowboard.
Some of the students were experts and others were beginners, but everyone had FUN! The group had 6 ski
sessions over a three day period. The students were all divided up into groups based on their ability to ski and
professional ski instructors gave lessons. As students grew in confidence and ability, the groups were adjusted
and everyone gradually moved to the top of the hill. On the last night, the students took a break from the snow
and spent some time in a water park. I would encourage you to send your child on this trip next year.

HS Personal Project Exhibition

Congratulations to the Grade 10 students for a wonderful first annual BIFS Personal Project Exhibition on
Monday, February 29! The Personal Project is the culminating experience of the MYP (Middle Years Programme)
and gives students an opportunity to demonstrate the skills, knowledge and attitudes that they have developed
throughout the programme.

The students went all out to develop

interesting, interactive displays celebrating
their work. Visitors to the booths could sit
and listen to original music compositions,
read excerpts from novellas, try their hand
at cartooning, animation, or Photoshop,
learn about health and diet issues,
endangered rhinos or the benefits of yoga,
see a mini-motorcycle in action or ride a
rocking horse.

Grade 11 DP Extended Essay Camps March 5 / April 9

Our Grade Eleven students are working hard to
complete their 4000 word Extended Essays. The
Extended Essay is a central requirement of the twoyear IB Diploma Programme. The majority of their
major papers will be completed by April 22nd. To
support the students, Extended Essay camps have
been set up in the school library on Saturdays. The
first camp ran on February 13th and was a great
success. Twelve students spent seven hours in the
library, solidly working on their Extended Essays.
Grade Eleven Parents, please circle your calendars
and remind your sons and daughters of the
upcoming EE camps on March 5th and April 9th.
(No tents or sleeping bags required.) Our goal is to support students with completing this major IB task before
university applications and major assessments are due in the fall.
