The table above displays the top ten winners of the London 2012 Olympic Games,
ranked by gold medals. Displayed are also the number of silver, bronze and total medals
won. It is interesting to note that the higher ranking countries also tend to win more medals
overall.
The first thing that can be clearly seen is a distinctive division between the top four
countries and that of the latter six. Whilst the first four countries see large differences
between the number of gold medals won up to 9 medals between China and Great Britain,
when we get to the latter six countries, the differences is a lot less only up to 3 medals
between France and Italy.
However, the number of gold medals won do not seem to have much of an effect on
anything else. For many countries such as the United States, Great Britain and South Korea
it can be identified that the number of silver and bronze medals won is very similar (or
exactly the same in the United States case). Interestingly, these number of medals won also
differs greatly from the number of gold medals won. Whilst the United States as 29 silver
and bronze medals each, it won a total of 46 medals. Conversely, Australia despite winning
16 and 12 silver and bronze medals respectively, only won 7 gold medals. Either way, it is
clear that in many cases the number of silver and bronze medals differs significantly from
that of gold medals won.

The number of silver and bronze medals won seems to also affect the total number
of medals won itself. There is a strong correlation between all three categories, as we can
determine that whenever we see lower amounts of silver and bronze medals, we see a
lower amount of total medals and vice versa regardless of the amount of gold medals won
by the country.
In conclusion, there is a huge variation in the number of medals won during the
London 2012 Olympic Games. Although, there is a clear trend that the number of silver,
bronze and total medals won are highly correlated regardless of what sort of fluctuations
they go through.
